A reported U.S.-to-China oil-tanker voyage cost about $80 million in October 2026, more than the $74 million listed for a standard SpaceX Falcon 9 launch. The striking gap reflects an exceptionally expensive tanker booking during a capacity squeeze—not proof that a rocket can move oil more cheaply, or that launch costs have stopped falling.
Why could the tanker voyage cost more?
The comparison comes from a Bloomberg report relayed by Jalopnik on October 9, 2026, which attributes the figures to shipbroker Gibson. It describes a particular U.S.-to-China tanker voyage, not a standard or enduring price for oil shipping. Bloomberg’s underlying report was not independently accessible, so the charter figure is best treated as an attributed snapshot.

The account says tanker capacity was tight and trade disruptions had lengthened voyages, leaving fewer ships available. For one U.S.-to-China booking, the reported rate worked out to $41 per barrel, compared with an average of $4.50 per barrel on the same route the year before. Those are route-specific figures from a volatile market, not a measure of current or typical tanker prices.

Vitol Group CEO Russell Hardy, quoted by Bloomberg as reproduced by Jalopnik, described the market this way: “There’s really not quite enough shipping to go around. We’ve had pretty parabolic pricing.”

What does the $80 million versus $74 million comparison actually mean?
It compares two total prices for different services. The tanker figure is a reported voyage charter; the rocket figure is the price of a standard Falcon 9 launch. A tanker carries crude between ports. A launch service delivers a payload to space.
The two figures do not establish which option is cheaper per tonne, per kilogram, per mile, or per unit of cargo delivered. A meaningful transport comparison would also need matched information about cargo mass, destination and distance, timing, and whether each price is a spot booking, published launch price, or actual customer contract. The reported comparison supplies no such matched dataset, and the rocket is not carrying the tanker’s oil.

Have rocket launches become cheaper?
Yes, over the long run. Space.com’s July 20, 2026 coverage of a study published in PNAS Nexus reports that researchers compiled data on 4,405 launches from 1960 through 2025, spanning more than 330 rocket configurations and multiple spacefaring regions. In 2024 U.S. dollars, their estimated average cost per kilogram to orbit fell from $87,023 in 1960 to $3,868 in 2025—a 96% decline.

Space.com describes the decline as reflecting accumulated launch experience, a post-Cold War shift toward commercial uses of space, and the scaled introduction of reusability. These are estimates of long-run industry economics, not a claim that every launch provider or customer pays the same price.

So the headline’s distinction matters: the reported tanker booking became unusually expensive in a disrupted market, while launch costs have also declined substantially over decades. The two trends can be true at once.

The researchers projected average costs of $1,600 per kilogram by 2030 and $300 per kilogram by 2040 if the trend continues. These are conditional forecasts, not observed prices or guarantees. Possible headwinds include orbital debris, the ability of a dominant provider to raise prices, and governments’ interest in maintaining independent national access to orbit.

- BUILD IT. COUNT DOWN. LAUNCH IT 10 FEET: Kids build their own realistic rocket and durable launcher from precision-cut wooden parts — then press the red launch button and watch it blast up to 10 feet into the air. No batteries, no electricity — pure mechanical action. Winner of the 2025 Parents Choice Award. Designed for kids ages 6 to 12.
- REAL ROCKET SCIENCE — SERIOUSLY: Every launch teaches Newton's Third Law of Motion — action and reaction — in the most tangible way possible. Kids also discover how rocket propulsion works, what forces keep a rocket on course, and why aerodynamic design matters. These are the same principles behind actual space missions, learned through building and launching.
- SAFE FOR INDOOR LAUNCHING: The rocket's soft foam tip makes it safe to launch indoors — no need for a backyard or outdoor space. Kids can blast off in the living room, bedroom, or classroom without any risk to people or furniture. The launcher is stable, the rocket is lightweight, and the thrill is completely real.
- STEM SKILLS BUILT INTO EVERY STEP: Assembling the rocket and launcher teaches structural engineering, spatial reasoning, and mechanical thinking before a single launch takes place. Kids follow illustrated step-by-step instructions to complete the build independently — developing patience, precision, and confidence in their own ability to make things work.
- RELAUNCHABLE, REPLAYABLE, ENDLESSLY FUN: This isn't a one-shot toy. Kids reload, relaunch, and experiment — adjusting angle, force, and technique to see how high and how far the rocket goes each time. Every launch is a new experiment. Every tweak teaches something new about physics, force, and flight.
Study co-author Alessio Terzi, an assistant professor of public policy at the University of Cambridge, told Space.com: “There is still significant scope for further cost reductions going forward.” He also cautioned: “Forecasting at moments of structural break is very hard in general, and therefore also in our case.”
