The practical comparison is usually QD-OLED versus traditional WOLED: QD-OLED tends to deliver more vivid HDR color, especially in a dark room, while WOLED generally keeps blacks darker when ambient light is hard to control. Both offer OLED contrast and fast pixel response, and either can show text fringing. The right choice depends on the exact monitor, its panel generation, and how you use it.
What do OLED, QD-OLED, and WOLED mean?
OLED is the broad category: each pixel produces its own light, so pixels can switch off for deep blacks. In this comparison, QD-OLED refers to Samsung Display’s quantum-dot OLED approach, while WOLED means LG Display’s traditional white-OLED approach. They are different panel designs within the OLED family.

RTINGS describes traditional WOLED as a white OLED layer with red, green, blue, and white subpixels. QD-OLED uses a blue-emitting layer and a quantum-dot layer with three subpixels. Those structures help explain differences in color and text rendering, but a panel label alone does not determine every monitor’s performance. Generations and subpixel layouts change. RTINGS’ panel comparison treats newer Tandem OLED separately from traditional WOLED; do not assume that results for older WOLED models apply unchanged to newer Tandem panels.

Which looks better in a bright or dark room?
QD-OLED in controlled lighting
QD-OLED is often the stronger fit for a dark or controlled-lighting room, where its vivid colors and HDR color volume can stand out. In a bright room, ambient light can raise its apparent black level; blacks may look purple and dark colors can appear washed out.
#1 Best Overall
- OLED Makes All The Difference: With a display of these mammoth-like proportions, everything must look good. The WQHD quantum dot OLED display with true 10Bit is obligated to offer stunning contrast, cinematic color. Image retention-refresh keeps the images from sticking.
- AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
- Fast and Furious: If you want seamless gameplay at ridiculous levels of speed, you’ve come to the right place. With an 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms (G to G) response time, your sessions will be fluid, unbroken and unmatched – with little to no ghosting.
- Brilliant Colors: With the DCI-P3 99% color gamut, Delta E<2, and HDR10, colors are practically bursting out of the screen. Enjoy the best imagery your games have to offer!
- Center of Vision: At 26.5-inches, the X27U is directly in your field of view. Considered a hallmark of eSports tournaments, this is the perfect size to gain an edge over your opponents. The addition of a ZeroFrame design also removes the bezels – giving you have even more visibly over every match and every movement your rivals make.
WOLED when room light is difficult to control
Traditional WOLED generally holds darker-looking blacks better in ambient light. It does not guarantee perfect blacks in every bright-room setup: the monitor’s coating and the light’s position also matter. If you cannot control light from windows or lamps, WOLED is often the safer starting point; if you can dim the room, QD-OLED’s color strengths are easier to enjoy. This is a category-level tendency, not a substitute for checking the particular screen. RTINGS compares the effect of room lighting and panel type.
Does QD-OLED have better color and HDR?
In RTINGS’ comparison, QD-OLED generally shows a wider range of vivid colors at high brightness and has the color-volume advantage, particularly in HDR. Newer Tandem WOLED panels narrow some of the gap with traditional WOLED, though RTINGS still reports an advantage for QD-OLED in the color-volume context it tested. These are trends across tested monitors, not fixed specifications for every screen.

- 27" QHD DISPLAY: Immerse yourself in stunning visuals with a 27-inch QHD (2560x1440) resolution, delivering crisp detail and vibrant colors.
- 240Hz REFRESH RATE & 0.03ms RESPONSE TIME: Enjoy smooth, blur-free gameplay with a lightning-fast 240Hz refresh rate and ultra-low 0.03ms (GtG) response time.
- HDR400 TRUE BLACK: Experience deeper blacks and brighter highlights with HDR400 True Black certification, enhancing contrast and visual realism.
- QD OLED TECHNOLOGY: Quantum Dot OLED panel ensures rich colors with 147.6% sRGB and 110.2% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, providing stunning color accuracy
- ADAPTIVE-SYNC TECHNOLOGY: Eliminate screen tearing and stuttering with Adaptive-Sync compatibility, ensuring a seamless and fluid gaming experience.
Brightness is not a single-number panel-family contest. RTINGS aggregated results from 21 QD-OLED and 15 WOLED monitors it independently bought and tested: QD-OLED tended to do better with small HDR highlights, WOLED with medium-sized highlights, and the results were more even for full-screen highlights. OLED monitors can dim when much of the screen is bright. For gaming, look for independent measurements of the exact model and the kind of HDR content you care about rather than relying on an unqualified “brighter” claim. See RTINGS’ test context and comparison.
What should desktop users know about text clarity?
Both panel families use subpixel arrangements unlike the conventional vertical RGB stripes common to LCD monitors. Windows ClearType was not designed specifically for traditional WOLED’s four-subpixel layouts or QD-OLED’s triangular RGB layout, so either can produce colored fringing around text. The pattern and how noticeable it is vary with the monitor’s layout, pixel density, coating, software rendering, and the viewer.

Higher pixel density can make QD-OLED fringing harder to notice, but neither label guarantees perfectly clear text. If the monitor will also be used for long hours of reading or office work, check model-specific reports or view the screen in person when possible. RTINGS discusses subpixel rendering, and Dell’s QD-OLED support article explains why its pixel structure can produce edge color artifacts.

Both QD-OLED and WOLED share OLED’s deep blacks in dark conditions and very fast pixel response characteristics. For gaming, compare the individual monitor’s refresh rate, resolution, variable refresh rate behavior, and input needs; panel family alone does not settle those specifications.

RTINGS’ comparison does not establish a significant burn-in advantage for either QD-OLED or WOLED. OLED burn-in is associated with prolonged exposure to static elements, so a fixed desktop layout or persistent game interface is relevant to how you use the display. Some monitors include panel-care measures: Dell says pixel shift on supported Alienware monitors is intended to prevent image retention and prolong panel life, but that is a mitigation feature, not a guarantee against burn-in. Check the warranty terms for the exact model. RTINGS’ panel comparison, its OLED overview, and Dell’s pixel-shift support article cover these points.
How to choose between QD-OLED and WOLED
| What matters most | Likely starting point | What to verify on the monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Vivid HDR color in a dark room | QD-OLED | Independent color-volume and HDR measurements for the exact model |
| Darker-looking blacks in a bright room | Traditional WOLED | Room lighting, coating, and model-specific black-level behavior |
| Text-heavy desktop use | No universal winner | Pixel density, subpixel layout, coating, and text appearance in your software |
| HDR highlights | Depends on highlight size and model | Small-, medium-, and full-screen HDR behavior, plus dimming under large bright areas |
| Burn-in concerns | No clear panel-family winner established | Usage pattern, manufacturer warranty, and panel-care features |
| Size, resolution, refresh rate, or ultrawide format | Depends on generation and product | Current local listings and the exact model specifications |
Use this as a shortlist, not a ranking of every product. Available formats and specifications vary by generation and market; RTINGS’ comparison is not a complete, country-by-country inventory for October 2026. Verify local availability and the model’s panel generation before buying.
