Why does an early-access game keep crashing or fail to launch?
There is no single cause. A launch failure can relate to damaged or missing install files, outdated system software or drivers, background software, hardware that does not meet the game’s requirements, or a defect in the game itself. Steam recommends restarting, updating the operating system and drivers, checking requirements, verifying files, and disabling nonessential software as general troubleshooting checks. Steam’s launch troubleshooting guidance does not establish that any one step will fix every game.

- Restart the computer and try launching the game again.
- Check the game’s published system requirements. A PC close to the minimum may still have launch or performance trouble.
- Install available operating-system and device-driver updates from the relevant official source.
- Verify the game’s installed files in its launcher, using the instructions below.
- Temporarily disable nonessential background software as a diagnostic check. This does not prove that any particular program caused the issue.
- If the game still will not launch, contact its developer. Include the game version, operating system, hardware, exact error message, and steps you have already tried.
How to verify game files in Steam or Epic Games Launcher
File verification checks an installation for missing or damaged files and is a sensible step when a game crashes or content is missing. It does not diagnose every cause of a crash, and it will not fix a defect in the game itself.
Steam
- Open Library and right-click the game, then choose Properties.
- Choose Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification to finish; Steam says the process may take several minutes.
Steam’s verification instructions note that one or more files may fail to verify normally when they are local configuration files. Do not verify multiple games at once or run verification while other system-intensive processes are active.

Epic Games Launcher
- Open Library and select the game’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage, then Verify.
- Let the launcher check the installation and repair any files it identifies as different or damaged.
Epic Games Store Support says, “Your saved data will not be affected.”
How to stop stuttering or poor performance
Stuttering alone does not identify the cause. Start by checking the game’s system requirements and installing current drivers from the relevant official source. Hardware near the minimum requirements can still struggle with performance.

Notice whether only the game stutters or the whole PC slows down, freezes, or restarts. If the computer itself crashes or restarts, investigate a possible system-level issue rather than treating it as an ordinary game crash. Steam notes that overheating may be associated with performance problems such as stuttering before a system crash; that is a possible clue, not a diagnosis. Avoid assuming that a particular graphics setting, graphics API, overclock, or driver version is a universal fix for an unspecified game.

Why did my save disappear or trigger a cloud conflict?
Cloud saves are game-dependent: a platform’s cloud feature only helps if the particular game supports it. Offline play can delay synchronization, and playing on multiple devices before they sync can leave different save versions to resolve.

Steam Cloud
If Steam reports that files could not sync, address the sync issue before choosing to play. Steam warns that proceeding despite a sync error may cause conflicting data or lost progress. Offline play will not sync until you are online again and may lead to a conflict. Steam says recovery of lost data is not likely, so do not assume a cloud copy can restore a missing save.

Epic Games cloud-save conflict
If Epic displays a conflict after the game was played offline on multiple devices, compare the available save versions and select the newer file to keep the latest save, following Epic’s cloud-save conflict guidance.

- Make a separate copy of local save data where possible before deleting, replacing, or reinstalling files.
- Do not assume every game stores saves in the same folder; ask the developer for the correct location and recovery steps.
- If the old computer is still accessible, the developer may be able to help locate and transfer save files, but recovery is not guaranteed.
When to contact the game’s developer
Contact the developer when the basic checks do not resolve the problem, when a current build appears to have a repeatable defect, or when you need game-specific save-file or recovery instructions. Provide the game version, your operating system and hardware, what happened, any exact error, and the steps you tried. Check the game’s current support page or known-issues list for reports and workarounds tied to that title and build.
