That difference shapes how each business feels an oil-price shock: for a driller, it usually arrives indirectly through customers’ spending, rig demand and contract rates. For an integrated company, prices can affect its own operating results and its ability to fund investment.
How the two businesses make money
Offshore drillers sell rig capacity and service
A drilling contractor provides a rig and crew under a contract, often for a day rate. The rate and payment terms depend on what the rig is doing: a contractor may receive a reduced rate or no payment during certain breakdowns, repairs, bad weather or other interruptions. The operator generally pays the well-construction costs and bears the economic risk of whether the well succeeds. Valaris states that its customers bear substantially all those costs and the well’s economic risk.

This shifts much of the geological and production-success risk to the customer, but not the contractor’s own risks. The contractor still has to keep specialized equipment operational, staff it safely, win and renew contracts, and cover fleet costs when work is scarce.
Integrated companies span a wider chain
An integrated oil company has a broader portfolio that can include exploration and production alongside other energy activities. Its performance can reflect commodity prices, production, project economics and the mix of businesses it owns or operates. It therefore faces more direct exposure to oil and gas market changes, as well as risks from developing, operating and allocating capital across a varied portfolio.

- 🌊 CHECK YOUR PATIENCE and MINDFULNESS - This 3d metal puzzle is a real challenge to your mindfulness and patience skills. All parts of the 3d puzzle - tower, crane, production and living quarters, helipad, mechanisms parts of the structure in motion are assembled by hand and will be ready for proper operation.
- 🌊 UNIQUE MODEL FEATURES - Our offshore drilling rig is equipped with mechanisms that bring the platform to life. The winding spring mechanism makes the crane turn. At the same time, the work of the gear system is visible, which creates a celebration of visual movement. The platform helipad has a retractable canopy. A miniature helicopter is hidden under it. After raising the canopy, the helipad also rises, and a staircase for passengers is served to it.
- 🌊 PRECISE LASER CUTTING and CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS - The precise cutting of this offshore oil rig model eliminates the possibility of cuts during the assembling process. The parts fit accurately together and will not create problems with connecting. The metal model Treasure Finder is designed for a wide range of users aged 14 and over.
- 🌊 DELIGHT TIME with METAL TIME - A demonstration of all the features of the drilling rig model will turn into a family entertainment that will cause delight and admiration, especially if you say you put it all together by yourself. After a few days of immersion in technical creativity, you will have amazing results. There are a lot of possibilities for using the Treasure Finder metal constructor. From a tech lesson in college to an oil tycoon's birthday present.
How oil prices reach each company
Offshore drillers are not insulated from oil prices, but the transmission is usually indirect. Lower prices or weaker long-term expectations can lead operators to review budgets, defer projects or seek lower-cost contracts. If fewer offshore projects proceed, contractors may face fewer bids, lower utilization, weaker day rates or difficulty renewing work. The effect can arrive with a lag: rig demand depends on spending decisions and project timelines, not just the current spot price.
Integrated companies have this project-spending channel too, but oil and gas prices also affect their own financial results and capacity to fund capital expenditure. Equinor’s 2025 annual-report risk disclosure says that fluctuating oil and gas prices, exchange rates and macroeconomic conditions significantly affect its financial results and ability to fund capital expenditure.

Where the main risks differ
| Risk area | Offshore drilling contractors | Integrated oil companies |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue and market cycle | Contract terms, rig operation, uptime, utilization, contract awards and renewals drive service revenue. Rig supply and bid competition can weaken rates. | Results reflect commodity markets, production, project economics, portfolio mix and capital allocation across a broader business. |
| Assets and execution | Specialized rigs are expensive to operate and maintain. Breakdowns, downtime, weather and safety incidents can reduce revenue or raise costs; idle assets still weigh on the business. | Large capital projects can be affected by geology, deep drilling conditions, supply constraints, unavailable skilled labor or technology, permitting delays and cost overruns. Reserves and asset values may also change. |
| Customers and concentration | A small number of customers, regional dependence, contract replacements and whether backlog turns into performed work can matter substantially. | Exposure can be spread across a broader portfolio, but countries, fiscal terms, market access and project counterparties create their own concentration and jurisdiction risks. |
| Policy and energy transition | Demand for rigs depends on customers’ energy strategies and the long-term outlook for hydrocarbons, as well as environmental rules. | Policy, climate regulation, technology and market changes may affect asset values, costs, access to capital and the delivery of transition plans. |
| Capital needs | Contractors must fund fleet maintenance and other capital needs even when rigs are idle or contract rates are weak. | Companies must choose how to fund and allocate capital across projects and business lines as commodity prices and market conditions change. |
Shell’s 2025 annual report describes capital-project risks including uncertain geology, deep drilling conditions, supply-chain constraints, unavailable skilled labor and technology, permitting delays and cost overruns. Those risks help explain why an integrated company’s exposure is broader than the price it receives for production.

Company disclosures illustrate why the risk profile of an individual contractor matters. Valaris reported that its five largest customers accounted for 49% of consolidated revenue for the year ended December 31, 2025; Petrobras, BP and Azule together accounted for 35%. These are Valaris-specific revenue figures for that year, not industry averages.

Noble reported that ExxonMobil, Shell, BP and TotalEnergies represented 23.7%, 19.5%, 16.2% and 12.6%, respectively, of its contract backlog as of December 31, 2025. Those are shares of backlog at a point in time, not shares of revenue. Backlog is contracted future work, not guaranteed cash flow or a promise of realized operating results; Noble cautions that it may not predict actual results. The Noble backlog percentages should not be compared directly with Valaris’s annual revenue percentages.

- For a contractor: examine contract duration and rates, utilization, renewal timing, fleet condition, customer and regional concentration, backlog quality, maintenance needs, financing and debt.
- For an integrated company: examine commodity-price exposure, production and reserve profile, project portfolio and execution, business mix, country and fiscal exposure, financing and capital-allocation plans.
- For both: consider operating and safety exposure, regulatory changes, transition-related demand, balance-sheet capacity and management choices. Capital intensity and cyclicality affect both, though through different business mechanisms.
Company disclosures are not a uniform scorecard: fleet quality, contract structures, leverage, customer mix, asset portfolios and geography vary. Compare individual businesses on those terms rather than treating either category as categorically safer.
