The right choice depends on the exact apps, devices, people, and services you need—not just the payment schedule.
What is the main difference?
Office 2024 is a one-time purchase for one computer. Microsoft Support describes it as “a one-time purchase, which means you pay a single, up-front cost to get Office apps for one computer.” It does not include an upgrade to the next major Office release; buying a later release would require another purchase. Microsoft 365 is a subscription, with benefits that vary by plan. Microsoft Support explains the licensing and update differences.

Which option fits your situation?
Choose Office 2024 if you want a fixed version for one computer
- You mainly use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote on one PC or Mac.
- You prefer a single upfront purchase over a recurring subscription.
- You do not need new features as Microsoft releases them or the subscription’s bundled cloud services.
Choose Microsoft 365 if you need ongoing features, services, or sharing
- You want the apps to receive new features as well as security updates and bug fixes.
- You use Office on multiple devices or want to share a qualifying plan with other people.
- You will make practical use of the plan’s OneDrive storage or other included services.
Microsoft describes eligible Personal, Family, Premium, and Pro plans as installable on multiple devices, with sign-in on up to five devices at the same time. Family and certain plans can be shared with up to five additional people. Those allowances are plan-specific and can change, so check the current Microsoft 365 plan comparison before choosing.

Office Home 2024 includes classic Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Office Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook. Microsoft 365 desktop apps and benefits depend on the subscription plan, so verify the plan’s current app list rather than assuming every tier includes the same software.

Office 2024 has an upfront cost; Microsoft 365 recurs monthly or annually. Microsoft’s US store search result displayed Office Home 2024 at $179.99 as a one-time price and Microsoft 365 Family at $12.99 per month in 2026. These are dated US examples, not guaranteed or universal prices. Local currency, annual billing, promotions, and current plan terms can differ. There is no universal break-even point in those figures: the comparison depends on the subscription tier and how long you expect to use it. It also changes if you value the subscription’s storage, services, device access, or sharing. Office 2024 does not buy you the next major release, so include a later purchase if you expect to upgrade.

Yes. Microsoft says its apps can be used offline after installation and activation. Internet access is needed for initial installation and activation, updates, billing management, and files stored in OneDrive unless those files are configured to sync locally. Microsoft advises connecting at least monthly to keep Microsoft 365 apps from entering reduced functionality mode. See Microsoft’s explanation of offline use.

How long is Office 2024 supported?
Microsoft’s Lifecycle page lists Office 2024 retirement as October 10, 2029, while Microsoft Support gives an end-of-support date of October 9, 2029. The two official pages differ by one day, so the safe planning horizon is October 2029 rather than a single definitive date.
