Check the card’s label first, then insert it label-facing the screen until it clicks. If its software icon appears on the HOME Menu, the console has detected the card—but that alone does not prove the game is fully compatible. Nintendo Switch 2 accepts Switch 2 game cards and compatible Nintendo Switch game cards; check the individual game’s Nintendo page or eShop listing before relying on an older Switch title.
Identify which kind of card you have
Look at the card packaging or label. It will identify the software as Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, or Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch 2 supports its own software cards, including game-key cards, Switch 2 Edition cards, and cards for compatible Nintendo Switch software. An original Switch card is not automatically guaranteed to work fully on Switch 2.

|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 game card | Designed for Switch 2; a game-key card requires a download before play. | For a game-key card, ensure internet access and enough storage for the initial download. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 Edition card | A Switch 2 Edition of a game. | Check the specific title’s Nintendo product page for its details. |
| Nintendo Switch game card | Works only if the individual title is compatible; some games may be unsupported or have partial compatibility issues. | Check the game’s Nintendo page or eShop listing for current title-specific compatibility information. |
Nintendo says its compatibility testing involves starting games and conducting limited testing, and labels the test-status information on its compatibility page as current as of June 5, 2025. Nintendo also says results can change, so treat that status as guidance rather than an exhaustive, permanent guarantee. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information.
Insert the card and check for detection
- Open the game-card slot cover on the console.
- Hold the card with its label facing the same direction as the Switch 2 screen.
- Slide it into the slot until it clicks. If it resists, remove it and check the orientation; do not force it.
- Look for the game’s software icon on the HOME Menu. Nintendo’s insertion instructions are available in its game-card support guide.
An icon on the HOME Menu confirms the console has detected the card. For an original Switch game, it does not establish that every feature will work correctly; use the title-specific compatibility information before assuming full compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Check an original Switch game before playing
Open the game’s Nintendo product page or find its entry in the Nintendo eShop and review the compatibility details for Switch 2. This matters because Nintendo warns that some original Switch games may not be supported or may have partial issues due to differences in hardware. Do not assume compatibility from the fact that the card fits or its icon appears.
Some older titles may also need original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers for particular functions. That is a game-specific accessory requirement, not a general requirement for inserting or reading a game card.

If it is a game-key card
A game-key card does not contain the full game data. On first use, the console needs an internet connection to download the game, and there must be enough free space on system storage or a microSD Express card. After downloading, keep the game-key card inserted whenever you play. Nintendo explains how game-key cards work.

- It will not slide in easily: remove it and confirm the label faces the screen. Do not force it.
- The icon does not appear: remove the card, check its orientation, and insert it again until it clicks.
- The icon appears but the game has issues: check the individual title’s Nintendo compatibility information; detection is not a guarantee of full compatibility.
- It is a game-key card: connect to the internet and confirm enough system or microSD Express storage is available for the download.
Can a Switch 2 game card work in an original Switch?
No. Compatibility does not run in both directions: a game card for a Switch 2-exclusive game will not run on an original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo addresses this in its console compatibility FAQ.
