For extra rigid protection when storing or displaying an individual card, sleeve it first and then place it in a compatible toploader. Sleeves and toploaders are different layers, and the fit between them depends on the specific products.
What to choose for your Pokémon cards
- For a deck you play: use standard-size sleeves made for Pokémon or standard trading cards. Choose a product intended for deck use and check current event rules before entering an organized tournament.
- For an individual card: use a soft sleeve for a simple protective layer. Add a toploader if you want a more rigid holder for storage or display.
- For thickness-based shopping: compare the manufacturer’s stated sleeve construction and thickness, but do not treat a higher number as proof of better protection or a preferred shuffle feel.
Start with the right sleeve size
Ultra PRO says its standard-size sleeves measure 66 × 91 mm and fit most trading cards, including Pokémon. Its small sleeves measure 62 × 89 mm and are intended for smaller card formats. These are Ultra PRO’s dimensions; other manufacturers’ products may differ, so check the package and confirm the card is fully covered. Ultra PRO’s sizing guide describes the distinction.

Sleeves and toploaders do different jobs
Soft sleeve: the layer around the card
A sleeve fits closely around the card and is the layer that touches it. For example, Ultra PRO describes its PRO-Gloss Standard Deck Protector as designed for Pokémon and standard 2.5 × 3.5-inch cards, with a polished front and archival-safe, acid-free, non-PVC material. The product page gives those specifications.

Toploader: a rigid outer holder
A toploader is a larger, rigid or semi-rigid holder. Ultra PRO says its toploaders are made with clear PVC sheets and are commonly 3 × 4 inches. The company recommends putting the card in a protective sleeve before inserting it into the toploader. Check that the specific holder accepts your sleeved card and its thickness; the nominal holder size alone does not guarantee identical clearance across products. See Ultra PRO’s toploader guide.

Choosing a sleeve for play or storage
For a deck you shuffle
Prioritize standard-size fit and a sleeve line intended for card games. Ultra PRO’s PRO-Gloss product is one manufacturer-described option for Pokémon and standard-size cards; its page specifies a polished front and non-PVC material. Those claims do not establish how it compares with another brand for shuffle feel or durability. If you use opaque or artwork-backed sleeves in organized play, verify the current rules with Pokémon Organized Play or the event organizer.

For an individual card in a toploader
Use a standard-size sleeve first, then check that the sleeved card slides into the chosen toploader without forcing it. Ultra PRO’s Premium Card Sleeves page describes a 100-count product for standard 2.5 × 3.5-inch cards up to 35PT, made from archival-grade, acid-free, non-PVC polypropylene, and says it is suitable for Ultra PRO toploaders. The European product page showed the item unavailable when inspected, so availability may vary. See the product specifications.

What to verify before relying on tournament sleeves
The Pokémon Organized Play rules document available for this topic is dated October 26, 2010. It says, historically, “All of the sleeves on a deck must be the same color, condition, size, and texture.” That dated document is not confirmation of current policy. Check the latest rules or ask the event organizer about sleeve color, visibility, condition, and consistency before an event. The 2010 rules document is useful only as historical guidance.
