Short answer: Odoo Community is a free, open-source software edition; Odoo Online is a managed hosting service. They are not two competing editions, and “not hosting it yourself” does not by itself determine which apps or features you get. The key choices are the edition you use, where it runs, and who manages its infrastructure. Community can be self-hosted, while Enterprise can also be hosted on-premise. Odoo Online reduces server administration, but its Standard plan does not support custom modules.
Community and Online describe different things
Odoo Community and Enterprise are software editions. Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, and on-premise are hosting options. Odoo’s edition comparison describes Community as open source and Enterprise as licensed; its hosting overview presents Online as SaaS and lists on-premise as an option for both editions.

That distinction matters when asking which features you “lose” by not self-hosting: hosting location is not a shortcut to Enterprise functionality. Community does not acquire every Enterprise capability just because you install it on your own server, and an Enterprise deployment is not limited to Odoo Online.

What features differ between Community and Enterprise?
Odoo’s edition comparison groups differences across support, upgrades and hosting, the user interface, and functional areas such as Finance. The exact feature set depends on the app and Odoo release. Check the live edition comparison for each workflow you rely on rather than assuming that a whole app is either present or absent in every Community deployment.

Odoo describes Community as the “free and open-source version of the software, licensed under the GNU LGPLv3.” Free software does not mean a free, fully managed ERP deployment: infrastructure, implementation, technical work, backups, upgrades, and support may still require staff or paid services.
What does Odoo Online give you—and what does it restrict?
Odoo Online is Odoo’s SaaS hosting option. Odoo manages the database, so customers do not need to maintain their own server. The current pricing page describes Standard as all apps hosted on Odoo Online, with cloud infrastructure for databases that do not use custom modules.

The main constraint is extensibility: Standard Odoo Online does not permit custom modules. If your workflow depends on custom-developed or third-party modules, evaluate a different hosting and plan combination before committing. The Custom plan is described as supporting Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, or on-premise hosting, along with Odoo Studio, multi-company, and external API. Check the live plan details for current terms and eligibility.
What changes if you host Odoo yourself?
On-premise installation gives you greater control over the environment and more room to customize existing apps, create apps, or install third-party applications. Odoo says this route requires technical knowledge for maintenance, backups, and data integrity. You also need to assign responsibility for security, upgrades, and operational support rather than treating those tasks as included server management.
Odoo documentation describes several ways to use or install Odoo, including online use, packaged installation, source installation, and Docker. Source installation offers flexibility, such as running multiple versions, but it is a deployment choice—not a turnkey operations service. See the Odoo 17 database management documentation for installation context; it is version-specific and should not be used alone to establish current app availability.

Who handles upgrades, support, and the hidden work?
Odoo says its plans include hosting, support, maintenance, and upgrades, while also listing exclusions such as Odoo.sh hosting for custom developments, implementation and expert services, certain in-app purchase credits, and maintenance of custom code. These are Odoo’s stated plan boundaries; they do not describe every Community deployment or every separate Enterprise agreement.

Budget for infrastructure, deployment, backups, security, upgrades, and the people or service provider who will troubleshoot the system. If you add custom code, include ongoing maintenance for it. The same cost categories matter when comparing self-hosted Enterprise with a hosted plan.

How to choose the right setup
- List the workflows and exact apps you need. Include required features, integrations, and any functionality your team cannot replace with configuration.
- Verify edition availability. Check the live edition matrix and documentation for the relevant Odoo release and each required feature.
- Decide whether custom or third-party modules are essential. If they are, Standard Odoo Online’s restriction is decisive; compare Custom with Odoo.sh or on-premise hosting instead.
- Assign operational ownership. For self-hosting, identify who will maintain infrastructure, backups, security, upgrades, and support.
- Compare total cost and control. Include implementation, migration, infrastructure, plan or license fees, Odoo.sh charges where applicable, and custom-code upkeep—not just Community’s free software license versus a subscription.
For standard workflows and a preference for managed infrastructure, compare the current Online plan cost with the internal administration you would otherwise provide. For deeper customization or infrastructure control, compare the Custom plan and applicable Odoo.sh charges with the cost of operating Community or Enterprise on-premise.
Can you move an Odoo Online database later?
Odoo says an Online database backup can be downloaded through the control center and describes switching hosting arrangements as possible. That does not guarantee a frictionless move for every database. Confirm the Odoo version, modules, data requirements, and transition plan for your specific deployment before relying on migration as a fallback.
