Infinite Sword Glitch (ISG) can increase damage and speed up contact attacks, but it restricts movement and is easy to lose. A newer bottled-item damage-overwrite technique, reported in October 2026, can bypass Volvagia’s Megaton Hammer and Ganondorf’s Light Arrows, yet it depends on precise, situational memory-loading setups.
Use the normal strategies for a first playthrough or dependable practice. Consider ISG for speedrun or randomizer routes only after you can clear the fights normally, and treat the bottled-item method as an emerging speedrun finding rather than a guaranteed casual shortcut.

Choose your route before entering a boss room
“With the glitch” can mean two different things. ISG makes Link swing continuously after a specific setup, while the newer damage-overwrite technique uses a bottled item’s lingering hitbox to replace a boss damage value. They have different benefits and failure modes.

Glitchless boss playbook
King Dodongo
Stay near the arena’s outer edge and watch for King Dodongo to inhale. Throw a Bomb or Bomb Flower into his open mouth. The explosion stuns him, giving you time to run in and strike with the sword. When he begins his roll, raise the Hylian Shield or move to the side rather than trying to trade hits. The fight is a timing exercise: save your bomb throw for the inhale, then use the stun window instead of attacking during the roll.
Barinade
Start with the Boomerang on the tentacles attached to the ceiling. Cutting them severs Barinade’s protection and exposes the boss to a stun. Once it is stunned, clear the orbiting electrified jellyfish before committing to the core; touching the orbiting bodies can interrupt your attack and cost hearts. Stun the core again with the Boomerang, close the distance, and use the sword. Repeat the separation, jellyfish clearance, and core attack rather than chasing the boss while its electrical defenses are active.
Phantom Ganon
In the painting phase, watch the three apparitions and identify the brighter, real Phantom Ganon. Shoot that figure with the Fairy Bow. The false images disappear when you choose correctly; a wrong shot wastes time and can leave you exposed. In phase two, Phantom Ganon sends energy balls across the arena. Return them with a sword swing, then run in and attack while he is stunned. Keep enough space to see the projectile’s path, and do not swing early: the reflected ball must meet the incoming attack.
Volvagia
Look for smoke rising from a lava pit; that signals where Volvagia will emerge. Move to the opening, hit the exposed head with the Megaton Hammer, and follow with sword attacks while the boss is grounded. Relocate as fire and falling rocks threaten your position. The intended loop is deliberately short—read the smoke, hammer the head, take the sword window, then move—so staying in the arena’s center after the attack creates unnecessary risk.

Morpha
Morpha’s red nucleus is the target. Use the Longshot to pull the nucleus out of the water, then strike it with the sword before it returns. Fight from a corner when possible; corner positioning reduces the angles from which the tentacles can grab Link. If a tentacle begins to surround you, prioritize creating space and reacquiring the nucleus rather than forcing an extra sword hit.
Bongo Bongo
Activate the Lens of Truth so the invisible body becomes visible. Shoot both hands with arrows to stun them, then shoot the visible eye. When the eye is stunned, close in for sword attacks. Keep the Lens active while locating the body, but watch your magic meter and movement: the hands and the drum’s bouncing surface can throw off your aim. The dependable order is Lens, hand stuns, eye shot, sword damage.
Twinrova
Use the Mirror Shield to reflect the witches’ elemental attacks. After they merge, absorb three attacks of the same element with the shield. Link stores that energy and releases it back at Twinrova, creating the opening for sword attacks. Do not absorb mixed elements; the sequence requires three of one type. Once the stored blast connects, move in promptly for the sword window and then reset your spacing for the next elemental volley.

Return Ganondorf’s energy balls with the sword. When one connects, fire a Light Arrow to bring him down, then attack with the sword before he recovers. Avoid the ground-pound shockwaves by moving away from the impact area rather than trying to stand underneath him. The intended inventory requirement is therefore a sword for the volley, Light Arrows for the knockdown, and enough room to react to shockwaves.

Ganon
Before you recover the Master Sword, use the Megaton Hammer or another available weapon. Stun Ganon with Light Arrows, roll between his legs, and strike the exposed tail. When Zelda creates the opening to retrieve the Master Sword, take it and continue attacking the tail with the same stun, roll, and strike rhythm. Do not linger in front of Ganon; the safe position is behind him after the leg roll.
How Infinite Sword Glitch works
The Zelda Dungeon Wiki describes ISG as a state in which Link constantly swings his sword, allowing rapid enemy defeats. The documented setup is precise:
- Crouch with the shield or crouch command active.
- Perform a forward stab.
- Immediately interrupt the stab with an interaction.
- Confirm success by the white glow around the sword.
ISG can inherit the damage value of the attack performed immediately before the setup. That makes the order of your actions important: the preceding attack determines what the continuous swings may deal. Because Link is always in a sword-swing state, contact damage can rise while your ability to navigate falls.
Movement costs and ways ISG ends
- Automatic jumps are prevented, so gaps and ledges that are harmless in normal play can stop your route.
- Some ledge movement no longer works, forcing a different approach to the boss or arena.
- Crouching, drawing or swinging the sword, interrupting damage, or leaving the area disables ISG.
- A setup that works in one room can be lost when you cross an area transition or perform one of those cancelling actions.
For a boss fight, this means ISG is not simply “more damage.” You trade ordinary movement and jump behavior for continuous swings. It is most useful when you can stay close to a stationary or repeatedly exposed target; it is less attractive when the fight demands frequent repositioning.

The October 2026 bottled-item damage overwrite
GamesRadar+ reported in October 2026 that Ocarina of Time speedrunner ZFG described using a bottled item as a lingering hitbox that disappears and “overwrites damage values.” Two reported applications are defeating Volvagia without the Megaton Hammer and defeating Ganondorf without Light Arrows. ZFG’s quoted summary was: "2 big uses so far are beating Volvagia without hammer, and Ganondorf without light arrows."
The idea is different from ISG. Instead of keeping Link in a permanent sword state, the setup manipulates which damage value the game applies after the bottled hitbox vanishes. A magic spin attack combined with a bottled fairy was described as relatively consistent, but the overall technique depends on memory-loading conditions. ZFG also cautioned: "Although this seems like something obviously very useful on the surface, there’s actually a bunch of minor details that makes it not as simple to just be an automatic timesaver in runs."
What the overwrite does for each reported boss
- Volvagia: the reported route can replace the Megaton Hammer requirement, but it does not make the normal smoke-reading and positioning unnecessary. You still need a repeatable way to expose and damage the boss.
- Ganondorf: the reported route can replace the Light Arrow knockdown. The volley phase, shockwave avoidance, and attack timing still matter.
These are newly reported speedrun uses, not established universal tactics. Memory-loading setups may vary by version, route, and exact execution. If the setup fails, return to the intended item loop rather than improvising in a live race.

Reliability, inventory, and audience trade-offs

Casual players should spend practice time on the intended loops because they remain useful even when a glitch setup is unavailable. Speedrunners may add ISG when its damage outweighs movement restrictions. Randomizer players should first identify the category’s item logic and glitch rules; a route that assumes Light Arrows or the Megaton Hammer is invalid if those items are intentionally missing, while a glitch-enabled category may permit the overwrite.

A practical practice plan
- Clear each boss normally. Learn the exact trigger that exposes the target: an inhale, smoke from a pit, an elemental volley, or an energy ball.
- Record the recovery point. After every stun, note where Link stands when the attack window ends. This prevents unnecessary damage while repositioning.
- Drill ISG separately. Practice the crouch, forward stab, and immediate interaction until the white sword glow appears consistently, then test a short movement route to feel where automatic jumps fail.
- Use a category-legal guide. Speedrun.com maintains separate glitchless and glitch-enabled guidance; confirm the ruleset before adopting a trick.
- Attempt the overwrite only in controlled practice. Reproduce the bottled-item and spin-attack sequence repeatedly before using it in a race, and keep the intended Volvagia and Ganondorf methods ready as a fallback.
Troubleshooting common failures
The boss takes normal damage instead of the expected glitch damage
For ISG, verify the white glow before approaching the boss and check that you did not crouch, draw or swing the sword, interrupt damage, or leave the area afterward. For the bottled-item method, a failed memory-loading setup can leave the ordinary damage value intact; reset the practice attempt rather than assuming the overwrite worked.
Link cannot cross a gap or ledge
This is an ISG movement cost. Because automatic jumps and some ledge movement are blocked, either route around the obstacle before activating ISG or cancel the state and use normal movement.
The intended item is missing
Only the October 2026 report specifically names Volvagia without the Megaton Hammer and Ganondorf without Light Arrows. Do not generalize that finding to every boss. For King Dodongo, Barinade, Phantom Ganon, Morpha, Bongo Bongo, Twinrova, and Ganon, the documented item loops remain the dependable baseline.

What you need to practice
You need access to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on a compatible Nintendo 64 release or other authorized version, plus the normal controller inputs for shielding, stabbing, sword swings, item use, and movement. Nintendo’s official game manual establishes the title’s item-based gameplay context. Practice in the version and category you intend to play, because timing, rules, and accepted glitches can differ between glitchless and glitch-enabled guides.
