To see what happened to one invoice request, record it as a distributed trace: a connected set of spans that follows the request through HTTP handling, downstream services and database operations. Each service must continue the incoming trace context, and span names and attributes should be consistent enough to follow the work without exposing invoice or customer data.
What a trace shows
When an invoice request is slow or fails, the useful question is not only whether the endpoint returned an error. It is which operation took place, where the request went next, and whether the problem occurred in the application, a downstream service or database work.
OpenTelemetry defines a distributed trace as the path taken by one request as it propagates through multiple services. A trace is made up of spans: records of individual operations connected by parent-child relationships. Together, those links form the request’s journey rather than a set of unrelated service logs. See OpenTelemetry’s Observability primer.
Follow the invoice request across each boundary
1. Start with the inbound HTTP span
The service that receives the invoice request creates an HTTP server span at the entry point. It should represent the incoming operation and record the relevant HTTP outcome. OpenTelemetry’s HTTP conventions specify attributes for the request method, URL path and URL scheme. Its naming guidance prefers {method} {target} when a low-cardinality target is available; otherwise, use the method alone. For example, a stable route such as POST /invoices/{invoiceId} is more useful for grouping requests than a name containing a different invoice number on every call. Exact emitted attribute names can depend on the instrumentation and conventions version.

Acid-free, PVC-free, and archival quality for safe storage. Adjustable snap closure helps keep contents secure. Use 2 additional front pockets for business cards, project title cards or notes.
The HTTP span conventions also say sensitive content in url.path should be scrubbed when instrumentation can identify it. Avoid putting invoice numbers, customer names or other sensitive identifiers into span names or broadly indexed attributes. These values can expose information and create a separate trace grouping for every request. See OpenTelemetry’s HTTP span conventions.
2. Carry context into downstream services
When the first service calls another over HTTP, the outgoing operation should appear as a client span beneath the work that initiated it. The receiving service must extract the propagated context and use it when creating its own server span. If that context is missing or replaced, the next service may produce a separate trace instead of extending the invoice request’s journey.

OpenTelemetry’s default propagator uses headers specified by W3C TraceContext, commonly the traceparent header. In a trace viewer, check that the downstream span belongs to the same trace and is linked beneath the calling service’s operation. Context propagation is the connection across process and network boundaries; it does not happen just because each service has tracing enabled. See OpenTelemetry’s context propagation guide.
3. Record database work as spans
Database calls should be visible as their own operations beneath the service work that initiated them. That lets an operator distinguish time spent preparing a request from time spent waiting on database activity. OpenTelemetry’s database conventions recommend CLIENT span kind for typical calls to a database in a separate process. See OpenTelemetry’s database client span conventions.

SQL-commenter propagation is an optional technique that can inject trace context into query comments. The database conventions say it should not be enabled by default; they also warn that high-cardinality comments can affect performance on some database systems. Treat it as a deliberate, system-specific option, not a prerequisite for tracing database work.
Make spans useful without leaking data
Consistent naming and attributes let operators recognize the same kinds of operations across services and languages. OpenTelemetry’s semantic conventions provide shared guidance for common telemetry fields; applying them consistently makes traces easier to correlate and consume. Check the conventions and instrumentation library versions actually in use before relying on exact attribute names: older instrumentations may emit earlier experimental conventions by default, and migration options differ between HTTP and database instrumentation. The current conventions index is OpenTelemetry Semantic Conventions 1.44.0.

- Prefer stable route templates over individual invoice identifiers in span names.
- Keep customer names, invoice numbers and other sensitive values out of names and broadly indexed attributes.
- Scrub identifiable sensitive material from URL paths where instrumentation supports it.
- Use the same semantic conventions across services where possible, and verify which convention version the deployed instrumentation emits.
Check that one request is actually connected
In the trace viewer, open a single invoice request and inspect the sequence of spans rather than judging only from the top-level operation. A trace is useful only to the extent that relevant work is instrumented and context reaches each boundary.
- Confirm the inbound HTTP server span represents the request and includes its HTTP outcome.
- Follow any outgoing HTTP client span to the receiving service’s server span; verify both share the trace and the parent-child relationship is present.
- Inspect database client spans under the service operation that issued the calls.
- Check that names use stable, low-cardinality routes and that sensitive path content and identifiers are not exposed.
- If a service or database operation is absent or appears in a separate trace, check instrumentation coverage and context propagation at that boundary.
These checks can show where recorded work occurred, but a trace cannot reveal operations that were not instrumented or reconnect work after context propagation failed.
