Hindsight’s documentation describes isolated memory banks for users or agents and four retrieval strategies. The DEV listing for this title names G haneesh Kumar and displays September 28, 2026, but the article text is unavailable, so its specific scope change and claimed improvement cannot be verified.
What “retrieval scope” means
A memory system can find a highly relevant fact and still return the wrong one if it searches records belonging to another user, project, or account. Retrieval scope is the boundary that determines which stored memories are eligible for a search. Ranking is a separate question: among eligible memories, which ones best match the query?

For example, imagine preparing a briefing for one customer while a search spans records for several customers. A similar pricing discussion from a different customer might be returned. This is an illustrative scenario, not a reported event from the unavailable article. A customer-specific boundary would exclude other customers’ memories before relevance ranking begins.
How Hindsight describes its memory boundaries
Hindsight’s official overview describes one isolated memory bank per user or agent. That is a product-design description, not proof that every application using Hindsight has correctly mapped its users, agents, projects, or accounts to separate banks. Confirm the actual configuration and identity mapping in your own application before relying on isolation.
#1 Best Overall
Choose the boundary to match the way information must be kept separate. Depending on the application, that could be a user, agent, project, customer, or another explicit scope. The key design question is which records should be eligible for this query—not merely which records seem most relevant after they have been retrieved.
How retrieval finds memories inside a boundary
Hindsight documents four retrieval strategies. They address different query shapes, so a search need not rely on one kind of match:

- Semantic retrieval: finds information related by meaning, including paraphrases that do not repeat the original wording.
- Keyword/BM25 retrieval: helps find exact terms, names, identifiers, and technical phrases.
- Graph retrieval: follows relationships between entities, such as people, organizations, or projects.
- Temporal retrieval: handles time expressions and date-related queries.
The documented recall pipeline fuses results by rank, reranks them with a cross-encoder, and fits the final results to a token budget. Scope determines the candidate pool; retrieval strategies search that pool; fusion and reranking order the candidates; the token budget limits how much can be supplied as context. Good ranking cannot guarantee that a memory belongs to the right user or project if the application searches the wrong boundary.
Memory is not necessarily a transcript
Hindsight’s overview says: “Hindsight does not store conversations. It extracts what was said into typed facts and then builds on them:” That distinction matters when debugging retrieval: the application may be searching extracted facts rather than reproducing a conversation verbatim. Check what information is represented in memory and whether the query uses language that can retrieve those facts.

A practical way to design and check scope
- Define the isolation rule. Write down which users, agents, projects, or customers must not share retrievable memories.
- Map identities to boundaries. Verify that the application selects the intended memory bank for each request, rather than assuming the product’s isolation model is configured correctly.
- Keep search within that boundary. Apply the scope before ranking. A relevance score is not a substitute for access or identity separation.
- Match retrieval to the query. Use semantic matching for meaning, keyword search for exact terms, graph retrieval for relationships, and temporal retrieval for dates or time ranges; combine strategies where the query calls for it.
- Inspect the returned context. Check both whether the retrieved facts answer the question and whether they belong to the intended boundary. Also check how much context survives the token-budget limit.
For evaluation, test representative paraphrases, exact names or technical terms, entity relationships, and date-based queries. Record whether results belong to the correct scope, answer the query, and avoid cross-entity leakage. These are recommended checks, not reported benchmark results.

The DEV Community listing displays the title “Hindsight Memory Only Helped Once I Fixed Retrieval Scope,” attributes it to G haneesh Kumar, and shows September 28, 2026. The article body could not be accessed. Its exact implementation, scope change, test method, and before-and-after outcome therefore remain unverified; the title alone does not establish that a particular change improved results.

Hindsight’s overview also presents vendor-reported retrieval-accuracy figures: 94.6% for Hindsight versus 74.0% for the stated next-best system on LongMemEval-S, and 92.0% versus 80.3% on LoComo. The page does not state a year or provide enough methodology to establish independent validation or full comparability across systems. These figures do not verify the personal outcome implied by the title.
