OBS YouTube Stream Stuck on Starting: Encoder and Connection Fixes

Use YouTube’s Live Control Room and OBS status to identify whether a stalled stream is a key, connection, bitrate, or local encoding problem.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If OBS says it is streaming but YouTube remains on “Starting,” first check the YouTube Studio Live Control Room preview and stream-health message, then check OBS for dropped frames or an encoding-overload warning. A YouTube encoder-start error calls for checking the stream key; dropped frames point to the network path or bitrate; encoding overload points to local performance. Resetting the key is not a universal fix.

Identify what is stuck before changing settings

Start a test stream and open its event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Look for a preview and the exact stream-health message. At the same time, watch OBS’s status indicators. The location and wording of the warning help distinguish a feed YouTube cannot accept from an unstable connection or a computer that cannot render and encode reliably.

What you see What to check first
YouTube reports an error starting the encoder Refresh the stream key in Live Control Room and update it in OBS.
OBS reports dropped frames Check connection stability, the selected server, and whether your upload can sustain the configured bitrate.
OBS reports encoding overload Reduce local GPU, scene, resolution, or frame-rate load.
No useful preview or clear message Verify the selected YouTube service, stream key, and server or stream URL, then run a controlled test and review the logs.

A “Starting” display by itself does not identify the cause. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during a test; its troubleshooting guidance treats an encoder-start error as a specific branch, not an explanation for every stall (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting; encoder setup guidance).

Fix a YouTube encoder-start error

For a third-party encoder error specifically described by YouTube as an error starting the encoder, YouTube’s prescribed first step is to copy a new stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. This is a targeted fix: it does not repair dropped frames, an incorrect server URL, or local encoding overload.

  1. Open the stream or scheduled event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the current stream key for the intended stream.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and select the intended YouTube service or account.
  4. Replace the key with the current one, apply the change, and start a test stream.
  5. Check whether YouTube receives a preview and whether the encoder-start message clears.

A stream key is a credential: do not post it in a screenshot, chat, support forum, or public log. If you believe it has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube and then update the encoder (Manage your YouTube live stream settings).

If you sign in to YouTube from third-party software rather than entering a stream key and YouTube reports an encoder-start error, YouTube says to contact that software’s support; it may need an update to work with YouTube Live (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting).

Verify the stream destination and protocol

In OBS’s Settings > Stream, confirm that the service or account, stream key, and server or stream URL belong to the YouTube event you intend to broadcast. A correct key paired with the wrong destination will not send the feed to the intended event.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. If the error mentions SSL or a connection timeout, check that the encoder supports RTMPS and that the configured URL is actually an RTMPS server URL, with the correct port. YouTube documents port 443 as a possible configuration. Treat this as a targeted check for protocol, SSL, or timeout symptoms—not a routine switch for every “Starting” display (YouTube RTMPS guide).

Fix dropped frames by testing the connection

OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote streaming server that is unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Its guidance says this is very unlikely to be caused by OBS itself. Work through the connection path before changing unrelated encoder or scene settings (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting, dated 2024-09-30).

  1. Try another server. If OBS lets you select an ingest server, test a different one and compare the result.
  2. Lower the video bitrate. OBS suggests a starting point of 75% of total upload speed. That is a troubleshooting rule of thumb, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of stable sustained upload.
  3. Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. A wired connection can avoid Wi-Fi instability. If possible, test with a known-good cable before buying hardware.
  4. Check network software. Temporarily investigate firewall or antivirus interference, VPNs, and bundled network-prioritization or “optimization” software. Check that network drivers are current.
  5. Restart network equipment. Restart the modem and router if connection faults persist. If the problem remains, contact your ISP; routing congestion or ISP-side changes may be involved.
  6. Isolate the service. Testing another streaming service can help determine whether the problem is specific to the selected service or broader connection path.

OBS also describes dynamic bitrate as a congestion workaround: it can lower quality as conditions worsen, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem. Do not interpret a temporarily smoother stream as proof that the network issue is resolved.

Check bitrate and encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingest, up to 60 fps. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval must not exceed four seconds. The Live Control Room generally detects resolution and frame rate automatically unless a custom key uses manual settings. YouTube also advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; official YouTube guidance accessed 2026-10-03).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For H.264, YouTube publishes these minimum and recommended bitrate examples. They are platform guidance, not a measurement of your connection; choose settings your upload can sustain reliably.

H.264 output YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 6 Mbps

Compare those settings with stable upload capacity, not just a single speed-test result. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the bitrate, output resolution, or frame rate and test again. YouTube’s live ingest specifications can change, so check the current encoder-settings page when configuring a stream.

Fix OBS encoding overload by reducing local load

An “encoding overloaded” warning points to local rendering or encoding performance, not a bad stream key or necessarily a network fault. OBS notes that scene composition uses GPU resources. Its encoding guide is dated 2021-06-12, so exact labels or Windows behavior can differ by OBS version (OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting).

  1. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a quick test for encoding overload.
  2. Reduce GPU competition. Close only applications you know are GPU-heavy; if streaming a game, lower its graphics settings or frame rate.
  3. Reduce output load. Lower output resolution or frame rate. For example, test 30 fps instead of 60 fps if the system cannot maintain the higher rate.
  4. Simplify the scene. Reduce complex scenes, resource-intensive browser sources, or filters, then test to see whether the warning clears.

Make one change at a time and test. These steps target rendering and encoding load; they will not correct an invalid key or unreachable server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a controlled test and know what to report

Before an important broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS’s indicators for the duration of the test. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before going live (encoder settings guidance).
