Network drops and rendering or encoding overload need different fixes.
Capture evidence before changing settings
Reproduce the scene change in a private or unlisted test stream, or another low-risk session. Use movement and audio similar to the real stream, as YouTube recommends, and note the time of the switch.

- Record which scene was active and whether the disconnect happens every time or only with a particular scene.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and rendering and encoding indicators around the event. Note any OBS warning.
- Check the OBS log for entries at the same time.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages and warnings.
OBS’s connection guide treats dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as evidence of a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. High rendering or encoding load points toward a different path to investigate. These indicators help narrow the cause; without your local stats and log, they cannot identify it conclusively. Work through the network path first when OBS shows dropped frames or intermittent connection warnings. OBS notes that a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate can lose frames, and enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Lowering bitrate may help match the connection, but it does not repair an underlying fault.

1. Check upload capacity and bitrate
Run an upload speed test, then compare the result with the stream’s configured bitrate and the connection’s stability over time. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a general starting point, not a guarantee: leave headroom for normal network variation and other traffic. YouTube recommends choosing quality that fits the connection and testing before going live. If you lower bitrate, make sure it remains within YouTube’s current recommendation for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
2. Test the ingest path and connection
- Try another ingest server if OBS offers one for your service, and see whether the problem follows the server. OBS also suggests testing another streaming service as a diagnostic comparison; this does not itself prove which component is at fault.
- If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. OBS warns Wi-Fi may be unstable. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is relevant only when testing Wi-Fi instability or replacing a cable you have confirmed is faulty; it is not a general cure for scene-change disconnects.
- Check the modem, router, cable, network card, switches, and extenders. Restarting the modem or router, or testing another cable or piece of hardware, can help isolate a fault.
- If the issue continues after these checks, contact your internet service provider.
3. Check software and network settings
VPN instability, firewall or security-software interference, network-prioritization or “optimization” utilities, and outdated network drivers can affect the connection. Test suspected software carefully; do not leave security protection disabled after a diagnostic test. Get network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.

OBS’s connection guide also describes Windows-specific network options. In OBS’s current settings, where available, test Network Optimizations and TCP pacing, leave Bind to IP at Default, and try IPv4 Only. If IPv4-only makes no difference, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 selection. Setting names and availability vary by platform and OBS version, so do not assume every installation exposes the same controls.

If rendering or encoding performance is overloaded
When performance indicators point to rendering or encoding load rather than network drops, a scene switch may expose an existing resource bottleneck: OBS has to render and composite the selected scene. The OBS performance guide identifies competing GPU work and complex scenes as possible constraints; it does not establish that a particular transition is defective.
Reduce competing GPU work
- Close applications you know are using substantial GPU resources.
- If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate or lower its graphics settings to leave GPU capacity for OBS.
- Reduce output frame rate or resolution if the system still cannot keep up. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
Simplify the scene that triggers the problem
- Test by temporarily removing or disabling expensive sources and filters, then add them back one at a time.
- Reduce the dimensions or number of browser sources where practical; use lower-resolution media when it suits the production.
- Keep scene collections focused and avoid unnecessary complexity. OBS notes that sources can consume resources even when they are not visible.
Change one thing at a time and repeat the same scene-switch test. Do not switch encoders as a blanket fix: first use the stats and log to establish whether rendering or encoding load is the relevant problem.

Verify YouTube encoder settings
YouTube advises testing with representative movement and audio, monitoring stream health and messages, and selecting a quality appropriate for the internet connection. Its live encoder guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use YouTube’s current table for the combination you actually stream rather than applying a number from another setup.

YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, with frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. For example, YouTube lists 17 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 60 fps. That is an encoder recommendation, not evidence that bitrate caused a specific disconnect. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current settings and ranges.

Use the evidence to narrow the cause

No general prevalence figure establishes how often scene changes cause OBS-to-YouTube disconnections. The useful diagnosis comes from the local evidence at the moment the stream drops.
