A stream that disconnects after running for hours does not point to one specific cause. Start by checking what OBS and YouTube report at the exact time it drops: those clues help distinguish an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server from a local network, software, encoder, or YouTube-side issue. OBS’s official guidance identifies intermittent disconnections and dropped frames as signs of a network problem somewhere between the computer and the remote ingest server—not proof that OBS itself is at fault.
What a disconnect every few hours does—and does not—tell you
The timing is worth recording, but it does not establish a scheduled timeout, an expiring stream key, or a particular hardware defect. OBS connects directly to the streaming service; OBS says there are no OBS streaming servers in that path. Its connection guide describes dropped frames as the program compensating when the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. If enough frames are dropped, the stream can disconnect. The source of the problem may be beyond OBS’s control. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide lays out that failure class.

First make sure you are diagnosing the broadcaster’s connection, not a viewer’s buffering. OBS has separate guidance for viewer buffering; if OBS reports dropped frames or a disconnection, use the connection checks below.

Before changing settings, note the exact time and what each system reports. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and inspect Stream health and its timestamped messages. YouTube says stream status includes specific error messages with instructions. Compare that with OBS’s connection indicator, dropped-frame counter, and log. YouTube’s live-stream metrics help explains stream status, while its live encoder troubleshooting page covers encoder problems.

- Did OBS say it disconnected, or did YouTube end or pause the event?
- Did the OBS dropped-frame counter rise before the disconnect? Record the displayed value and whether it continued increasing.
- What exact error and timestamp did YouTube show? Preserve the wording rather than relying on memory.
- Did the encoder preview and local recording remain normal? Note CPU load and whether picture or sound changed.
- Did another device or service on the same connection have trouble at the same time?
These observations make later tests useful: a healthy encoder output with a failing outbound stream points in a different direction from an encoder error or a YouTube message that gives a specific corrective action.
Check the encoder and YouTube status before changing the network
Confirm OBS is producing the intended picture and sound
Check the encoder preview, audio meters, CPU load, and any local recording around the failure. YouTube recommends checking the encoder version, picture and sound inside the encoder, dashboard errors, CPU load, and local archive. If the encoder output looks healthy but the stream is still having trouble, YouTube says an outbound internet connection issue may be involved.

Follow a specific YouTube error, not a generic guess
If YouTube reports an encoder start error, its troubleshooting guidance tells third-party encoder users to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Treat that as a fix for the relevant error—not a routine remedy for a stream that ran successfully for several hours. The timing alone does not show that a key expired.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTest bitrate and the route to YouTube
- Record your current settings. Note the selected ingest server, video bitrate, resolution, and frame rate before making a change, so you can restore them.
- Try another ingest server, if OBS offers one. OBS recommends testing another server where available. If the result changes, that is evidence about the route or ingest path, not proof of a permanent fix.
- Lower the video bitrate and observe a comparable stream. OBS’s 2024 guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. This is a starting point, not a guarantee: stability and YouTube’s applicable limits still matter. YouTube’s published encoder settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not apply one bitrate figure to every setup. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the relevant format guidance.
- Test another streaming service only as an isolation step. If the same OBS setup drops there too, that broadens the evidence for a local or outbound-path issue. If only YouTube is affected, it may be service-specific. OBS notes that this test does not itself fix a service-specific connection problem.
A lower or dynamic bitrate can mitigate congestion by reducing what the connection must carry, but it can also reduce picture quality and leave the underlying route problem unresolved. OBS describes dynamic bitrate as a mitigation, not a root-cause fix.

Separate local network and software causes
- Wi-Fi versus Ethernet: If you currently stream over Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. Wi-Fi can be unstable; a cable or other network link can also be faulty, so the test helps isolate rather than guarantees a cure.
- VPN or security software: Temporarily test whether a VPN or security product is interfering. Restore security protections after the test; if the result identifies a conflict, add an OBS exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Traffic-prioritization utilities and drivers: Check for network-optimization software and update or troubleshoot network drivers where appropriate.
- Router or modem: Restart the equipment as a basic connectivity check. Do not replace it solely because the stream drops; look for evidence that isolates a faulty link first.
Change one variable at a time and record whether the stream remains stable. Simultaneously changing bitrate, server, Wi-Fi, and security settings makes it difficult to identify what mattered.
Use OBS network options as controlled tests
OBS lists several optional settings that some users report can help. They are diagnostic experiments, not universal fixes:

- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- Network optimizations and TCP pacing: OBS lists these as Windows-only options that may help some users. Enabling them adds diagnostic detail to the log.
- Bind to IP: OBS lists “Default” as a setting to check. Avoid forcing a specific interface unless the evidence points to an interface-selection issue.
- IPv4-only test: OBS suggests testing IPv4-only. If that makes no difference, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
- Dynamic bitrate: This may reduce dropped frames during congestion, but the trade-off is reduced video quality; it does not resolve the underlying cause.
For the current labels and availability of these options, use the OBS guide for your installed version: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Read the pattern and decide whom to contact
- OBS dropped frames rise and YouTube reports an unhealthy stream: Prioritize bitrate, ingest-server, wired-network, and outbound-route tests.
- Encoder output or local recording also fails: Investigate OBS, encoder load, the computer, and the source before treating the internet connection as the only suspect.
- OBS output looks healthy but YouTube shows a specific error: Follow that error’s instruction. If unresolved, report the issue to YouTube with its timestamp and the encoder evidence.
- Results vary by network, server, or service: Include those comparisons when escalating; they help show which part of the path changes the outcome.
If the evidence still indicates an outbound path problem, contact your ISP with the failure timestamps and the tests you ran. OBS notes that an ISP can make changes or unexpected congestion can occur along a connection route. If the encoder and outbound connection appear healthy but YouTube’s Live Control Room continues to report an error, follow its instruction and contact YouTube if it remains unresolved.

Questions readers often ask
Could keyframe timing be causing a disconnect after hours?
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds in its encoder settings guidance. That is a configuration reference, not evidence that keyframe timing explains a periodic disconnect. Check it against your format settings, but rely on the timestamped OBS and YouTube status to diagnose this failure.
