Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If your YouTube stream stops after a DigitalOcean VPS crash, first find out whether the encoder stopped, the Droplet or its network is unreachable, or YouTube is no longer receiving the feed. Check YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder before rebooting. Use a graceful reboot only if the system needs one; reserve a power cycle for an unresponsive Droplet, and use DigitalOcean’s Recovery Console or Recovery ISO when normal access or boot has failed.
Identify which part of the stream failed
A live broadcast depends on three links: the encoder must produce and send video, the Droplet must be reachable with working outbound connectivity, and YouTube must accept the feed. A running VPS alone does not prove that the encoder is sending usable video. Likewise, a missing preview does not by itself prove that the Droplet crashed.

- Check whether the Droplet is reachable. If SSH works, inspect the encoder process or service, its logs, CPU load, disk space, and outbound network connection.
- Choose the least disruptive recovery action that fits the failure. If the host is reachable but the encoder is unhealthy, address the encoder before rebooting. If SSH is unavailable, use DigitalOcean’s access-recovery options rather than assuming the encoder is at fault.
The specific cause depends on the Droplet’s operating system, installed encoder, logs, and current state; there is no single service name or restart command that applies to every setup.
Restore the encoder and YouTube connection
Restart the encoder only if the system is accessible
If SSH works and the encoder process or service has stopped or is unhealthy, inspect its logs and restart it using the method appropriate for the software and operating system you installed. The exact service manager, unit name, and command are installation-specific; do not copy a guessed command into a production VPS.

Confirm the destination and stream key
Check that the encoder is configured with the stream URL and stream key for the intended YouTube stream. A stream key is a credential-like value that authorizes the encoder feed. YouTube allows stream settings to be reused and provides a reset flow for a key that is compromised or unusable. If you reset the key, update the encoder configuration before trying to reconnect. Keep the key out of screenshots, public logs, and shared examples.
Choose the right DigitalOcean recovery path
DigitalOcean lists Bangalore as region code BLR1 in its availability documentation. That regional label does not establish that every Droplet plan or feature is available there; confirm the current availability table for the plan you intend to use.
Rank #2
| What you observe | First recovery action | Disruption and purpose |
|---|---|---|
| SSH works; Droplet boots; encoder is unhealthy | Inspect the encoder and its logs, then restart it using the installed software’s documented method. | Least disruptive; targets the service rather than resetting the host. |
| System responds, but a reboot is needed | Use a graceful reboot. | Allows the operating system to shut down normally. |
| Droplet is unresponsive | Use a power cycle only as a stronger fallback. | DigitalOcean describes power_cycle as similar to pressing a physical reset button; abrupt interruption can affect writes and complicate recovery. |
| SSH or network access fails, but the Droplet needs access recovery | Use the Recovery Console. | Out-of-band access for cases where network settings or sshd prevent normal remote login. |
| The Droplet has a boot or filesystem problem | Boot the Recovery ISO and use its command-line and filesystem recovery tools. | For boot or filesystem recovery, including filesystem checks and data recovery; restore normal boot from the Droplet disk afterward. |
When SSH is unavailable: Recovery Console
DigitalOcean states: “The Recovery Console provides out-of-band access and is available regardless of your network settings.” It is intended for access recovery or booting the Recovery ISO. The regular Droplet Console is for command-line work when normal network connectivity is available. See DigitalOcean’s Recovery Console documentation for the current access procedure.
When the system will not boot: Recovery ISO
Use the Recovery ISO when the problem is boot-related or you need command-line access to the filesystem for checks or data recovery. After completing recovery work, restore the Droplet’s normal boot from its disk. If DigitalOcean has restricted the Droplet or you suspect compromise, follow the provider’s current support instructions rather than treating it as an ordinary encoder crash. See DigitalOcean’s Recovery ISO instructions.

Verify that viewers can see and hear the stream
- Wait for the encoder preview in YouTube Live Control Room and check for incoming video and audio.
- Open the public watch page to confirm that playback works from a viewer’s perspective; check on a mobile device as well if that matters to your audience.
- Confirm that audio and video are both present and that any local archive is growing.
- Continue monitoring the preview and stream quality after recovery rather than relying only on a running VPS or encoder process.
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and monitoring quality before and during an event. Its streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; this is YouTube’s recommendation, not an independently measured benchmark, and the reviewed page does not state a publication year. YouTube also advises that primary and backup stream bandwidth, with its recommended margin, fit within available outbound capacity. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting and tips.
Make the next outage easier to recover from
- Start the encoder on boot. Configure the encoder service to launch automatically and use an appropriate supervisor or restart policy. The exact configuration depends on your OS and encoder.
- Monitor both ends. Watch the VPS and encoder service, but also check YouTube’s ingest preview; a healthy host does not guarantee a usable feed.
- Plan for independent failure modes. Keep a tested backup encoder or alternate publishing path for important broadcasts. YouTube describes a failover check: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet, then confirm playback moves to the backup. A backup helps only if it is configured, tested, and able to publish when the primary path fails.
- Protect configuration and credentials. Keep backups of encoder configuration, store stream keys securely, and reset a key if it may have been exposed. Update the encoder wherever the key is configured.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is the #1 cloud option to try: it runs always on from the cloud, accepts your video at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and gives you a first day free. Upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
