What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose OBS Studio if you want free, open-source software that runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and are willing to configure it. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you want a guided setup with alerts and chat widgets built into the workflow. Choose XSplit Broadcaster if you use Windows and want its production tools, and its free-tier limits or a paid plan suit you. There is no evidence here for a universal winner based on speed, CPU use, or image quality.
Compare the three apps at a glance
| Software | Platforms | Best fit | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Windows, macOS, Linux | Creators who want a free, open-source, highly configurable production tool | Flexibility means you should expect to configure scenes, sources, and extensions yourself |
| XSplit Broadcaster | Windows | Windows users who want scene-based production features and are comfortable with the license limits or Premium | The free license restricts resolution, scenes, frame rate, commercial use, and simultaneous broadcasting |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Windows 11 or macOS 12 minimums listed in its system-requirements article; its May 2026 Quick Start guide recommends Windows 11 or macOS 13 or later | Creators who want a guided workflow with account linking, alerts, chat, audio, and stream settings in one setup | Needs vary with content and production complexity; its free guide describes one platform per video-layout orientation |
These are different workflow choices, not a tested performance ranking. Vendor documentation does not establish a comparable head-to-head result for encoding speed, CPU use, or output quality.

When OBS Studio is the right choice
OBS Studio is free and open source, with versions listed for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Its scene system can combine sources such as window captures, images, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. It also offers unlimited scenes, custom transitions, audio filters including noise suppression, VST plugin support, a modular dock interface, Studio Mode preview, Multiview, hotkeys, and an API supporting native plugins and Lua or Python scripts.
That breadth suits a creator who wants control over the production layout or needs to customize it with plugins and scripts. The corresponding cost is setup effort: OBS is not presented as a fully guided, preassembled alert-and-chat workflow.

Check whether your computer is suitable
The OBS Project lists Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. The project cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The actual workload depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check the current OBS system requirements for your machine before planning a demanding stream.
When XSplit Broadcaster makes sense
XSplit Broadcaster is a Windows application for streaming and recording scenes, including workflows such as podcasts, presentations, and virtual-camera use. Its official feature overview describes native platform plugins, Custom RTMP, multiple outputs, built-in chat plugins, browser sources, multiple audio tracks, and virtual-camera and background tools. Simultaneous broadcasting to multiple platforms requires a Premium license.

Its comparison table lists four scenes for Free and unlimited scenes for Premium. Free streaming is up to 720p without a watermark; above that resolution, the free stream is watermarked. The table also lists watermarking above 30 fps for Free. Free is for personal use only and does not include simultaneous broadcasting; Premium includes commercial use and simultaneous broadcasting among its listed features.
Those terms and prices can change, so confirm the current XSplit Broadcaster pricing page before choosing a license. XSplit’s FAQ identifies Broadcaster as Windows-only and describes the free-license restrictions. When Streamlabs Desktop is a better fit
Streamlabs’ Quick Start guide walks through connecting streaming accounts, creating scenes, adding gameplay or webcam sources, placing widgets such as Alert Box or Chat Box, selecting microphone input, setting resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoder, then checking alerts, preview, and audio before going live. That makes it a reasonable choice if you prefer a structured setup with common creator widgets in the same workflow; it does not establish that the app is always easier or performs better.
The guide says the free version includes one platform per video-layout orientation and points users to Dual Output guidance for horizontal and vertical platforms. If you need a specific simultaneous-output arrangement, verify that guide and the plan requirements rather than assuming it is included.

Match the requirements to the production
Streamlabs’ system-requirements article lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 as minimums. Its Quick Start guide, dated May 20, 2026, recommends Windows 11 or macOS 13 or later. The guide notes that more demanding games, animated overlays, and advanced plugins call for stronger hardware, and that needs also depend on the content and other programs running. Review the current Streamlabs Desktop system requirements and Quick Start guide for current details.
Choose by operating system, limits, and workflow
Start with your operating system
- Linux: OBS is the only one of these three whose cited product information lists Linux support.
- macOS: OBS and Streamlabs have cited Mac support. XSplit Broadcaster is Windows-only.
- Windows: All three are options, so compare the production workflow and license limits next.
Check the limits that can change your decision
- For free streaming above 720p or above 30 fps without XSplit’s listed watermark restrictions, the free XSplit tier may not fit.
- If you need more than four scenes or commercial use in XSplit, its pricing comparison places those features in Premium.
- If you need multi-platform broadcasting from XSplit, its official overview says that requires Premium.
- If you need a guided account, widget, and pre-stream-check workflow, Streamlabs documents those steps in its Quick Start guide.
- If you want to build a bespoke layout and extend it with plugins or scripts, OBS documents those customization options.
Decide whether you need a capture card
A capture card is relevant when you need to bring an external video source into the scene; OBS lists capture cards as a supported source type. It is not a routine requirement for every streamer. Streamlabs’ setup guide also covers adding video-capture devices. Check the signal and connections of the particular external source before buying capture hardware.
Why performance claims need matched testing
Do not choose among these apps based on an unsupported claim that one is universally faster, uses less CPU, or produces better-looking video. No comparable controlled benchmark is established here. Hardware needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, overlays, and other running applications; minimum compatibility alone does not guarantee a successful stream. Compare your own actual workflow and verify the result with a test stream before relying on it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is specifically to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 using uploaded video, that is different from producing a live camera or gameplay stream in desktop software. StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos or a playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
