Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Neither OBS nor FFmpeg can be named the universal electricity-saver for a YouTube loop stream. Power use depends on the computer and the work it performs: encoding method, output resolution and frame rate, and any scene composition, scaling, filtering, or other processing. There is no matched wall-power test here that establishes a winner. To know which uses less on your setup, compare both under the same conditions and measure the whole computer at the wall.
Why the program name does not determine power use
Streaming a prerecorded video still requires the computer to read and process media and send a live stream. How much work that takes depends on the full pipeline, not just whether the application is OBS or FFmpeg.

- Encoding: A software encoder uses the CPU; a supported hardware encoder moves encoding work to a specialized component in the GPU. The actual impact on whole-system electricity depends on the hardware and settings.
- Output settings: Resolution and frames per second affect workload. OBS notes that its CPU requirements vary considerably with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity (OBS system requirements).
- Extra processing: OBS composites and renders scenes, using GPU resources; sources and effects can add work. FFmpeg can likewise filter, scale, and transcode media, or use a simpler pipeline.
- Quality and reliability: A lower-power configuration is not a fair winner if it delivers a different picture, drops frames, or fails to keep the stream live.
What OBS and FFmpeg documentation tells you
OBS: scene rendering and encoder choice matter
OBS says it uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. Its performance guidance recommends simplifying scenes and reducing resolution, frame rate, or expensive sources when resource use is a problem (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting).
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. However, OBS notes that earlier-generation hardware encoders may produce lower image quality than software encoding at the same bitrate. That guidance does not quantify a reduction in total electricity use; test the encoder options available on your machine while keeping output quality comparable (OBS hardware encoding).

FFmpeg: looping is supported, but it is not an energy result
FFmpeg can read media, filter or transcode streams, and write outputs. Its video loop filter repeats frames indefinitely when configured with loop=-1 (FFmpeg loop filter). That describes how to make a video repeat; it does not tell you how much electricity the complete streaming setup will use.
FFmpeg’s hardware acceleration options depend on the build, installed drivers, and device. Its documentation cautions that many acceleration methods are aimed at playback and may not be faster than software decoding on modern CPUs. The presence of a hardware option alone is not evidence of lower power use (FFmpeg documentation).

How to compare electricity use on your computer
A useful comparison measures the complete computer, not just CPU utilization or an application’s reported resource use. Keep the stream and workload equivalent: changing encoder, quality, resolution, frame rate, or processing can change the work being compared.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Fix the test conditions. Use the same computer, source file, stream destination, resolution, frame rate, and audio and video settings for both runs.
- Match the encoding path and quality target. Compare the same available encoder where possible. If the programs cannot use identical settings, record the differences rather than treating the outcomes as directly equivalent.
- Record versions and settings. Note the OBS and FFmpeg versions, encoder, output settings, filters, and any OBS scene sources so the result can be repeated.
- Measure wall power for equal periods. Let each setup stabilize, then measure whole-system draw over the same interval. Repeat runs and compare averages. If you want the added cost of streaming rather than total consumption, measure the same computer’s idle baseline and compare the increase.
- Check the actual stream. Confirm continuity and inspect audio and picture quality. A run that saves power by dropping frames or reducing quality is not an equivalent result.
This is a practical measurement method, not a published head-to-head test. No wattage or percentage saving for OBS versus FFmpeg on a matched YouTube loop stream is established.

What the available energy study can and cannot show
A 2015 paper hosted by Simon Fraser University measured energy in a game streaming and recording benchmark and reported increased energy use in its software-encoding condition (Simon Fraser University paper). That workload is not a prerecorded YouTube loop, and it did not compare OBS with FFmpeg. Its result cannot be used as a numerical estimate or verdict for this choice.
