There is no single bill increase for every desktop: the cost depends on the computer’s average power draw while the playlist runs, how many hours it stays on, and the electricity rate on your bill. Calculate it as: (average watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × price per kWh. For a 30-day, nonstop month, use 720 hours. Measuring the computer at the wall during playback gives you a more useful estimate than its power-supply rating or an idle measurement.
Calculate the electricity cost
Convert the computer’s average draw from watts to kilowatts, multiply by the number of hours it runs, then multiply by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh):

Cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × price per kWh
- A 30-day month of continuous operation is 720 hours.
- A 365-day year is 8,760 hours.
- At a constant 100 W for 720 hours, use 72 kWh. That is an arithmetic example, not a claim that a typical desktop draws 100 W.
Use the marginal energy rate on your own bill—the charge for each additional kWh—rather than assuming a national average applies to you. If your bill has multiple rate periods or separate energy charges, use the rate relevant to when the computer runs.

Measure it while the playlist is playing
A plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure power at the wall. Connect the computer through the meter and observe it in the same configuration and playback state you actually use. For a representative average, allow playback to run long enough to capture ordinary fluctuations. Include a monitor or other peripherals only if you want to count their consumption too; note what is connected so you do not compare unlike measurements.

The power supply’s maximum wattage is not the computer’s usual draw. Consumption changes with hardware, settings, peripheral load, and activity. An idle reading is not necessarily a good estimate for video playback.
Use published measurements only as illustrations
Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog reported a 2011 measurement of one PC with an Intel Q9550 processor, 8 GB of RAM, a 7200 RPM hard drive, and GeForce 8400GS graphics: 102 W at idle, 4 W in S3 sleep, and 165 W under 100% CPU load. The measurement covered the system, not peripherals such as a monitor, and the idle figure was not a YouTube-playback test. It is a historical example, not a prediction for a current desktop. Microsoft’s measurement and explanation provide the original context.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
At a constant 102 W for 720 hours, that example works out to 73.44 kWh. The blog used an assumed electricity price of $0.10/kWh to illustrate a monthly cost; that old price should not be treated as a current rate.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports a 2025 average residential electricity price of 17.30¢/kWh, based on preliminary data published in February 2026. Applying that rate to the historical 73.44 kWh example gives about $12.71 for 30 days. This is a calculation using an old PC’s idle measurement—not a current YouTube test or an estimate for every desktop. The EIA’s reported 2025 state averages ranged from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii; its national average across all retail customer types was 13.63¢/kWh. Your own rate is the relevant input. See the EIA’s electricity price data and factors.

Reduce usage when nonstop playback is not necessary
If the playlist does not need to run continuously, shutting the computer down or allowing it to sleep during idle periods avoids using power for those hours. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends using built-in power management and choosing the shortest timeout and lowest-power mode compatible with the task. Sleep will interrupt playback, so it is not suitable while the playlist must remain active. DOE says sleep and off modes will not shorten computer life, and its 2026 guidance says leaving power-saving mode enabled can reduce computer energy use by up to 27% annually; that figure is not specific to YouTube playback. Read DOE’s computer energy guidance.
ENERGY STAR’s computer criteria effective October 2025 require power-management behavior that includes display sleep within 15 minutes and system sleep within 30 minutes under specified inactivity conditions. Those timeouts are standards conditions, not a recommendation to let a computer sleep during a playlist that must stay live. ENERGY STAR also estimates that enabling power management on a certified desktop can save an office or home office $15 per year; this is not a guaranteed saving for a 24/7 playback setup. See ENERGY STAR’s computer guidance.
