Neither OBS Studio nor FFmpeg has a proven software-cost or electricity-cost advantage for 24/7 YouTube streaming. Both are open-source projects, and available documentation does not establish that FFmpeg inherently uses less power than OBS. Your actual cost depends on the whole setup: host, measured electricity, internet service, reliability measures and the time spent configuring and maintaining it.

To find the cheaper option for your channel, compare OBS and FFmpeg on the same host with the same source and output settings, then measure total wall power and account for hosting, upload charges and interruptions. A fixed scripted loop may suit FFmpeg; OBS may suit a stream built around scenes, capture sources and graphical controls. Those workflow differences can affect your labor, but do not determine the power-cost winner.

If you already own a suitable computer, its purchase price is sunk for a marginal comparison. Its additional electricity use and reliability still count. If you need to buy a host, account for purchase price, useful life and compatibility as well as power draw. An Intel Quick Sync-capable mini PC is one category to investigate, not a verified cheapest choice: no specific model price or power measurement is established here.

Estimating electricity for an owned computer

Measure average whole-system wall power while the actual OBS scene or FFmpeg media loop runs. Then estimate monthly electricity:

Average measured watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 hours × 30.4 days × your local electricity price per kWh.

Elgato 4K S Capture Card for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2
  • 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors
  • HFR Support: Play and capture in 1440p120 or 1080p240

  • Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
  • Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input

A wall meter or trustworthy whole-system measurement is more useful than CPU utilization alone. GPU encoding, source decoding, scene composition, capture hardware, idle system draw and other running services all affect consumption. Use representative run periods and include restarts or failures in the comparison.

Estimating a cloud-hosted setup

Price an instance that can handle your chosen codec and workload for about 730 hours in a 30.4-day month. Add any network egress charges or service limits. Provider rates, local electricity tariffs and representative OBS-versus-FFmpeg power readings are not established here, so there is no defensible universal monthly total to quote.

What OBS and FFmpeg documentation tells you—and what it does not

OBS describes itself as free, open-source software for capturing, compositing, encoding, recording and streaming. Its help page says anyone may use it, including commercially, subject to GPLv2 terms. The OBS Studio project and OBS Help Portal state those details.

FFmpeg is an open-source multimedia framework with tools to read, filter, encode and output media. Its documentation and full documentation describe its capabilities and controls; they do not provide a matched power-consumption comparison with OBS. Neither project’s license or documentation establishes a paid software-license fee as the deciding difference for this comparison.

Workflow can affect labor, not prove a power winner

  • FFmpeg: Its command-line tools can be a practical fit for a fixed, scripted playlist or loop.
  • OBS: Its graphical workflow can be a practical fit when you need scene composition, capture sources, transitions or visual controls.

Those are workflow considerations, not a measured claim that one application costs less to run. Operator time belongs in your total-cost estimate: simpler setup and recovery for your particular stream can matter even when the software itself is free.

How to make a fair OBS-versus-FFmpeg comparison

  1. Match the workload. Use the same source media or scene, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, encoder and other running processes. If you compare different machines, describe the result as a system comparison, not an OBS-versus-FFmpeg software test.
  2. Measure total system power. Record wall power during representative operation for each configuration. Do not infer electricity use from CPU percentage.
  3. Run long enough to reflect real use. Use the actual 24/7 scene or media loop, and note interruptions, restarts and stream-health problems as well as power.
  4. Price the full setup. Include host purchase amortization or cloud hosting, electricity, any incremental internet charges, backup or reliability costs and operator time.
  5. Check the output and recovery workflow. Confirm the stream stays healthy with the chosen encoder and settings, and account for what it takes to detect and recover from a failure.

Choose YouTube settings before comparing power

The output settings shape the workload and your required sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264, HEVC or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a keyframe frequency of two seconds—not over four seconds. Use the row matching your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec in YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps
4K30 42 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published recommended H.264 video bitrates, not measured bandwidth needs for every stream or prices from an internet provider. Check that your connection can sustain the chosen upload, and account for any local plan limits or charges. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and motion while monitoring stream health; see its encoder setup guidance.

Hardware encoding and performance

OBS documents support for NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to platform and hardware-generation qualifications. It notes that CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Its hardware encoding guidance says hardware encoders can move work off the CPU to a specialized component; that does not establish that OBS is cheaper than FFmpeg. FFmpeg also exposes hardware-acceleration and encoder controls, but compatibility depends on the system and selected workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When either application struggles, check the chosen encoder and settings against the available hardware. OBS’s system requirements and encoding performance troubleshooting guidance explain that requirements and performance vary; a CPU-utilization figure alone is not a power-cost comparison.

Plan separately for continuous streaming and archives

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single uninterrupted 24-hour stream exceeds that stated automatic-archive window, so do not assume the entire broadcast will be archived automatically. If keeping recordings matters, plan how you will handle stream or session segmentation and verify the archive behavior you need.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to stay live from uploaded videos without keeping a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option to consider. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the service loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera or to other platforms.

Quick Recap

  • Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
