What Is RTSP and How Does It Work for Live Streaming?

RTSP sets up and controls a real-time media session; a separate transport usually carries the video. Learn how sessions, URLs, camera compatibility, VLC, and browser playback fit together.

RTSP, the Real-Time Streaming Protocol, is used to establish and control a real-time media session. It is not usually the path that carries the video itself: a camera or media server provides the stream, RTSP tells the client how to set up and control the session, and a separate mechanism—often RTP—delivers the audio or video.

That distinction matters when you connect an IP camera, choose a network transport, or try to open an RTSP URL in a browser. RTSP is best understood as a remote control for a media session, not as a universal video format or a guarantee that every player can display the feed.

What is RTSP?

RTSP is an application-layer protocol for setting up and controlling real-time media delivery between a client and a server. In a common security-camera setup, the camera acts as the source and a compatible player, recorder, or video-management system requests its stream.

The IETF’s RTSP 1.0 standard, RFC 2326, describes RTSP as a “network remote control” for multimedia servers. The current RTSP standard is RTSP 2.0, specified in RFC 7826 and published in December 2016. The earlier RFC 2326 dates to April 1998. RTSP is designed to be relatively independent of the media type and the mechanism used to deliver it.

How does an RTSP session work?

Think of the session as two related paths: a control path for RTSP instructions and a media path for the actual audio or video. They may use different transport arrangements.

  1. Describe the available media. The client needs information about the media resources and delivery options. How that information is obtained depends on the server and implementation.
  2. Set up the session. The client sends an RTSP SETUP request to establish the session and negotiate transport parameters.
  3. Start or control playback. The client can use PLAY to begin delivery and PAUSE to suspend it. RTSP 2.0 also defines other session controls, including teardown.
  4. Receive the media separately. RTP is one media-delivery mechanism used with RTSP, but RTSP does not require RTP in every implementation. The negotiated media transport carries the stream; RTSP carries the control messages.

So an RTSP URL is not, by itself, the video. It identifies a resource and gives compatible software a way to request a session. The client and server still need compatible media and transport settings.

RTSP over TCP or UDP: what is the difference?

There are two separate transport questions. Under RTSP 2.0, RTSP control messages use TCP or TLS over TCP. The media transport is negotiated separately. Camera implementations may offer different media options, so “RTSP uses TCP” or “RTSP uses UDP” can be misleading without saying which traffic you mean.

Traffic or option What it means What to check
RTSP control messages RTSP 2.0 requires TCP or TLS over TCP for the control channel. Confirm that the client, server, and network allow the required control connection.
RTP over TCP Media travels over TCP in implementations that support this option. Check camera and client support and whether the network permits the connection.
RTP over UDP unicast Media is sent using UDP to an individual recipient when both endpoints support it. Check firewall rules, routing, and whether UDP traffic can pass between endpoints.
Multicast or HTTP tunneling Some camera implementations offer these as additional media-delivery options. Check the specific model, client, and network; these are not universal RTSP capabilities in every device.

Axis documents RTP over TCP, RTP over UDP unicast, multicast, and HTTP tunneling for supported cameras. That is an example of vendor-specific options, not a promise that every RTSP camera offers them. There is no single transport choice that is best for every endpoint and network.

What is an RTSP URL?

An RTSP URL is an address a compatible client can use to request a media resource. Depending on the camera, it may contain a username, password, IP address, port, and stream path or channel. The path is model-specific: Axis documentation uses an axis-media path, while Reolink’s example uses a Preview channel path. Do not assume either format works with another camera.

Find the URL format in the documentation for the exact camera model and firmware, and check whether RTSP must first be enabled. Treat URLs containing credentials as secrets: do not post them publicly, include them in screenshots, or leave them in shared scripts. If a credential has been exposed, change it through the camera’s supported account settings.

How to view an RTSP camera stream in VLC

The exact setup depends on the camera. Reolink documents VLC playback for supported cameras and notes that RTSP/ONVIF may need to be enabled. Some cameras require a recorder or hub for third-party streaming. Confirm support and the URL format for your model before troubleshooting the player.

  1. Check camera support and settings. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact camera and firmware. Verify that RTSP is supported, enable it if required, and confirm whether the camera can provide a third-party stream on its own or needs an NVR or hub.
  2. Get the correct stream URL. Use the model’s documented address, port, and stream path or channel. Avoid copying an example URL from a different model; the path and available stream modes can differ.
  3. Open the network stream in VLC. In VLC, choose Media > Open Network Stream, enter the camera’s RTSP URL, and start playback. If authentication is required, use the camera’s credentials in the way its documentation recommends; do not share a URL containing a real password.
  4. If playback fails, test the transport and network. Check that the client and camera support the selected media transport and that firewall or routing rules allow the required traffic. If the camera offers an alternative such as RTP over TCP or UDP, test only options supported by both endpoints.

Axis’s getting-started instructions use administrator access, RTSP enabled, and ffplay installed, then show a camera-specific RTSP URL; its RTSP guide includes transport-specific ffplay examples. Reolink documents a VLC workflow for its supported cameras. Those are vendor-specific procedures, so use the matching product documentation rather than treating a sample command or URL as universal.

Can a browser play an RTSP URL directly?

Not reliably as a general rule. RTSP support does not guarantee that a web browser can open the camera’s RTSP URL directly. A compatible media player, NVR, or video-management system is a common way to view the stream. To display or republish it in a browser, systems commonly use a conversion or relay layer that outputs a browser-oriented format.

Equipped with bank-level encryption technology—even if the WiFi camera is stolen or damaged, your videos remain exclusive to you, with no unauthorized access possible.

Choose the viewing path based on the result you need: direct playback in a compatible player, recording and management through an NVR or VMS, or a separate relay/conversion workflow for browser playback. A camera’s RTSP support alone does not provide the latter two automatically.

Why seeking backward may not work on a live RTSP feed

A live-only camera feed that is not being retained generally has no accessible history for a player to search. In that case, playback controls cannot recover footage that was never recorded. RTSP 2.0 describes live-media properties and current ranges, but recording and time-shift behavior depend on the server and overall system—not simply on whether a feed uses RTSP. If you need review or rewind, verify that the camera, recorder, or server actually records and exposes that history.

RTSP camera compatibility checks before setup

  • Exact model and firmware: Confirm RTSP support for the precise camera configuration, not just the product family.
  • Standalone or recorder requirement: Check whether third-party streaming works directly from the camera or needs an NVR or hub.
  • Enablement and credentials: Verify any required RTSP/ONVIF setting and the account permissions needed to access the stream.
  • Stream path and mode: Confirm the URL path or channel and whether the needed main or substream is available. These can vary by camera and recorder combination.
  • Network and transport: Match the media transport to what the camera and client support, and account for firewall and routing rules.
  • Intended destination: Decide whether you need a player, recording/management system, or browser relay; RTSP alone does not guarantee all three.

Vendor guidance illustrates why checking the exact product matters: Reolink identifies product and configuration differences, and some camera/NVR combinations limit available stream modes. There is no universal RTSP URL or compatibility guarantee across IP cameras.

RTSP troubleshooting: common causes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The client cannot connect. RTSP is unsupported or disabled, the address or credentials are wrong, or the camera requires an NVR/hub. Verify support and enablement for the exact model, recheck the documented URL and access details, and confirm any recorder requirement.
The URL works on one camera but not another. The stream path, channel, port, or supported stream mode differs. Use the second model’s own documentation rather than reusing the first camera’s URL.
The client connects but no media appears. The control session may be established while the separately negotiated media transport is blocked or unsupported. Check both endpoints’ supported media transports and relevant firewall or routing rules; try another documented option only if both support it.
The feed plays in VLC but not in a browser. The browser does not directly support that RTSP playback path. Use a compatible player, NVR/VMS, or a suitable relay/conversion layer for browser-oriented playback.
You cannot rewind a live feed. The source is live-only and no accessible recording or time-shift history is available. Check whether the camera or system records and exposes past footage; RTSP itself does not guarantee retention.

Or let it run in the cloud

RTSP is for controlling a real-time media session, such as a compatible camera feed. StreamNeo is a separate option for a different job: keeping uploaded prerecorded videos live on a YouTube channel 24/7. It does not take an RTSP camera feed or go live from a camera.

To use StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

See StreamNeo for the service details, then start your free first day.
