OBS vs. FFmpeg for a YouTube Live Loop on a Low-Power PC

OBS is the easier graphical starting point when a supported hardware encoder is available; FFmpeg may suit command-line users, but neither has a universal low-power advantage.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal winner. OBS is the more approachable starting point if you want a graphical setup and your PC exposes a supported hardware encoder. FFmpeg may suit a fixed, command-line workflow, but the available evidence does not establish that it uses less CPU or provide a verified loop-and-reconnect command for this job. Whichever you choose, test the actual video, audio, settings, and connection before relying on a 24/7 stream.

How to choose between OBS and FFmpeg

Factor OBS FFmpeg
Setup and visibility Graphical workflow; OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Command-line workflow; useful if you already manage encoding and automation that way. A specific loop command is not established here.
Low-power PC suitability Depends on the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check whether OBS offers a supported hardware encoder. No comparative CPU or power result is established here; do not assume it is lighter than OBS.
Preview and monitoring Provides a graphical interface for checking the scene; YouTube’s Live Control Room remains important for preview and stream health. Plan to monitor the output through YouTube’s Live Control Room. The available evidence does not establish a particular FFmpeg monitoring or recovery setup.
Loop and recovery behavior Test the exact media source and restart behavior you intend to use; do not assume uninterrupted looping or automatic recovery without checking it. Verify loop, restart, and reconnect behavior for your exact command and setup. No particular flags or tested recovery behavior are established here.

OBS’s published minimum requirements describe compatibility, not a guarantee that a specific PC can encode a chosen stream reliably. OBS says performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and suggests starting with its Auto-Configuration Wizard. Its hardware encoding guidance generally recommends hardware encoding to shift work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Availability and results depend on the GPU and encoder generation; a hardware encoder is not automatically available or suitable on every PC.

Set YouTube’s requirements before comparing performance

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the platform constraint for either application. Its settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Follow the settings supported by your chosen encoder and the format you send.

Output example YouTube H.264 minimum bitrate YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are the figures in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance accessed in 2026, not a connection test or a promise that a particular PC or upload link will sustain the stream. YouTube also recommends 20% upload headroom. If your connection cannot sustain the selected output with headroom, lower the target resolution or frame rate and test again.

Try an OBS loop on a low-power PC

  1. Check the encoder and start with the wizard. Open OBS and run Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. Check the encoder choices available in your OBS output settings. If a supported hardware encoder such as NVENC, QSV, or AMF appears, test it; availability depends on your GPU and system.
  2. Start modestly. Choose an output resolution and frame rate your PC and connection can sustain. If the machine struggles, reduce resolution or frame rate rather than assuming the minimum system requirements guarantee reliable encoding.
  3. Build and test the loop scene. Add the intended video source and any audio you need. Play representative sections, including movement and sound, and observe whether the PC keeps up. Test the specific loop behavior in your setup rather than assuming it will restart seamlessly.
  4. Set the YouTube encoder parameters. Use a supported codec, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For H.264, use YouTube’s resolution-specific bitrate guidance as a starting point, while leaving the recommended 20% upload headroom.
  5. Connect through RTMPS. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and copy its RTMPS URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Keep the key private: it functions like a password.
  6. Preview and monitor before relying on it. Start the encoder and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Test audio and motion and watch for dropped frames, encoding overload, or connection warnings. Do not treat a single short successful start as proof of reliable 24/7 operation.

Use FFmpeg only when you can verify the exact workflow

FFmpeg can be a reasonable choice if you already operate a command-line encoding workflow and can validate its behavior on the target PC. The available evidence does not substantiate a particular loop flag, reconnect option, CPU advantage, or seamless-restart command, so an unverified command would be a poor basis for a continuous stream.

  1. Confirm the input and encoder. Identify the exact file, audio, output codec, and encoder supported by the PC. If you intend to use hardware encoding, verify that the device, driver, and FFmpeg build actually expose it.
  2. Set output parameters to YouTube’s current guidance. Use a supported codec and CBR, choose a suitable resolution and frame rate, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds (never over four). Use the YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance where applicable and leave upload headroom.
  3. Validate looping and failure recovery separately. Test what happens at the end of the file, after a network interruption, and if the FFmpeg process exits. Confirm the exact command and restart mechanism against documentation for the FFmpeg build you use; do not assume a loop automatically reconnects to YouTube.
  4. Send a private test stream first. Enter the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room, protect the key, then preview and monitor stream health while testing the actual audio, motion, CPU load, and upload stability.

For either method, the PC model, operating system, media format, desired output, and required recovery behavior can change the practical choice. No universal CPU ranking between OBS and FFmpeg is established here.

Troubleshoot the usual failure points

  • Encoding overload or choppy output: lower resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and check whether a supported hardware encoder is available. Repeat the test with the real media and audio.
  • Connection warnings or dropped frames: check available upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce bitrate or output demands if the connection cannot sustain the target.
  • Stream will not connect: verify that the RTMPS URL and stream key match the intended YouTube stream. Re-copy them from Live Control Room if needed, and keep the key private.
  • Video plays but audio or movement is wrong: test representative sections and review the encoder preview and YouTube stream health before leaving the stream unattended.
  • Loop stops or does not recover after interruption: reproduce the end-of-file, network-loss, and process-exit cases. Check the exact application configuration and restart procedure; do not assume YouTube or the encoder will resume the loop automatically.
  • Live stream interrupted for copyright: YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may cause a placeholder image, warning, interruption, or termination. Confirm you have rights to all looped video and audio; repeating or personally owning a recording does not itself establish that you have rights to all included material. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Plan for archive length and stream rights

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A stream intended to run longer should not be assumed to receive the same automatic archive treatment; check YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance and decide how you will preserve any recording you need. Separately, continuous playback does not bypass YouTube’s live-content copyright checks.
