Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To test a prerecorded video loop privately, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, set its visibility to Private before connecting your encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health while the loop runs. Use Unlisted only if anyone with the link may watch. When the rehearsal ends, check the saved archive’s visibility too.
Before you create the test
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube’s current general guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance has the details.
- Prepare the same video file, audio, encoder, and network connection you plan to use for the public stream. A private rehearsal can reveal problems with YouTube receiving the feed, but it does not guarantee the public event will have identical conditions.
- YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. These are planning recommendations, not privacy safeguards. YouTube’s computer streaming tips and streaming tips explain its preparation guidance.
How to run a private encoder test
- Create the test event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Select the encoder streaming option if prompted. Choose the intended visibility before connecting or starting your encoder. YouTube supports Public, Private, and Unlisted for encoder and scheduled streams; the default may depend on your age, so do not assume it is Private. See Manage live stream settings.
- Set visibility to Private. This is the access-limited choice when you want the rehearsal restricted. Confirm the setting on the event before proceeding. YouTube’s documentation confirms the visibility options but does not describe every possible viewer-access edge case; if an invited person needs to review the stream, verify access with the intended account before relying on it.
- Copy the stream URL and key. In the event’s stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. A stream key is a credential that lets YouTube accept the encoder feed, so treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it casually. Use the event’s own stream details, rather than assuming a key from another event is appropriate.
- Set up the loop in your encoder. Load the prerecorded video and enable the encoder’s loop or repeat option. YouTube’s Help pages do not specify how to configure looping in OBS or another third-party encoder; controls and behavior vary by software. Consult the current instructions for the encoder you use. Before starting, verify that the correct file is selected and that the repeat behavior will not introduce an unintended gap, abrupt audio change, or black frame.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start sending the feed, then watch the Live Control Room preview before starting the YouTube event. Check that the picture is stable, motion appears as expected, and sound is present, clear, and synchronized. Let the loop reach its end and repeat at least once so you can inspect the transition rather than only the opening.
- Check stream health and access. Watch for stream-health notices in Live Control Room. Confirm that the event is accessible through the intended channel or watch page and, if relevant, on a mobile device. For a Private test, check access using the authorized account or accounts you intend to allow; for Unlisted, test with the link as a recipient would. YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings guidance cover monitoring and encoder quality considerations.
- End the test in order. Stop the event on YouTube, then stop the encoder. YouTube advises stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. If you see a problem, note the time and any stream-health message before changing settings; this makes it easier to identify whether the issue is in the file, encoder, connection, or YouTube ingestion.
- Check the archive. Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. In YouTube Studio, open Content and then the Live area, locate the test recording, and verify its visibility. Change it if needed, and keep a local backup if the recording matters. See Archive live streams.
Private, Unlisted, or mobile Practice Mode?
| Option | When it fits | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Private | Use for a rehearsal whose audience should be limited to the creator and invited viewers. | Confirm the event’s access setting in Studio and verify access with the intended authorized account. |
| Unlisted | Use when a trusted reviewer needs to open the test from a link. | Anyone who receives the link may be able to pass it on; treat the link as an access credential and share it only as intended. |
| Mobile Live Practice Mode | A separate YouTube practice space for rehearsing mobile live setup, content, and interaction without a live audience. | YouTube describes it as mobile-only and rolling out to creators, so it may not be available to every channel. It is not documented as a practice mode for encoder-based prerecorded loops. See Create a YouTube live stream on mobile. |
What the rehearsal can—and cannot—verify
A private encoder test lets you check that YouTube receives the feed, the Live Control Room preview looks and sounds right, stream health is acceptable, and the event is reachable by the accounts or link you intend. Repeating the video during the test also lets you observe the loop transition. The loop itself is controlled by your encoder, not by a YouTube loop setting described in the Help pages cited here.

Do not assume that privacy settings settle copyright or monetization questions. Use material you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable policies before a public broadcast. A successful private rehearsal confirms neither that you own the content nor that a later public stream will qualify for monetization.
Common test problems and fixes
- The test appears public or has the wrong access setting: Stop before inviting viewers, return to the event settings in Live Control Room, and set the intended visibility. Recheck the event rather than relying on the default or a previous event’s setting.
- The encoder is not connecting: Check that the stream URL and key were copied into the correct encoder fields, that the key belongs to the intended event, and that the encoder is sending. Do not share the key while troubleshooting.
- The preview is blank, frozen, or missing sound: Check that the encoder has the correct media source, that playback is active, and that the source’s audio is routed to the stream. Review Live Control Room’s health notices and the encoder’s output status.
- The loop breaks or sounds wrong at the repeat: Inspect the source file and the encoder’s loop behavior at the transition. Try a full repeat during the private test; YouTube does not provide a universal loop-control setting for third-party encoders.
- The event is not visible to a reviewer: Check the event’s visibility and test with the exact account or link the reviewer will use. Private and Unlisted do not mean the same thing: Unlisted access depends on having the link.
- The archived test is visible more broadly than intended: Find it in Studio’s Content > Live area, inspect its visibility, and change it. A stream under 12 hours may be automatically archived, so ending the live event does not remove the need to check the recording.
Or let it run in the cloud
