You can run a YouTube 24/7 stream from a prepaid VPS by sending a continuously running encoder’s output to YouTube Live. Create a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder on the VPS, then start the encoder. The exact VPS you choose must be tested with your media, target quality and transfer allowance; a plan’s advertised specifications do not guarantee it can encode continuously. YouTube also warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Before you buy a prepaid VPS
A VPS is a remote server you administer. It can run an encoder that either re-encodes media or relays a compatible pre-encoded feed to YouTube. Re-encoding demands more CPU; relaying can reduce that work, but only if the media and encoder workflow are compatible. Neither a provider’s “streaming” label nor a listed CPU count proves a specific stream will run reliably.

Check the workload and server
- Decide your target resolution and frame rate, and whether the VPS must encode or can relay the source.
- Check CPU, memory, storage for source media, sustained outbound bandwidth, monthly transfer allowance and any fair-use or excess-transfer terms.
- Consider server location and the route to YouTube’s ingest service; verify with a test rather than assuming a nearby data center guarantees a good route.
- Compare the recurring price, renewal amount, taxes, support, and what happens if the service is interrupted.
- Confirm directly at checkout whether the provider accepts your intended prepaid method, whether auto-renewal is enabled, and the cancellation and refund terms. The India plan examples below do not establish that card, UPI, or any particular payment method is accepted.
YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above your stream bitrate. For example, a 10 Mbps stream calls for at least 12 Mbps of sustained outbound capacity under that recommendation. This is a YouTube recommendation, not a guarantee that a provider’s advertised bandwidth will be sustained by your VPS. Test from the actual machine and monitor its transfer use.
Configure YouTube Live and your encoder
1. Create the live stream and obtain its credentials
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream. In your encoder, enter the URL as the destination/server and the key in the stream-key field, then start the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guide describes this workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in public code, screenshots or logs. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Studio; see Manage your live stream settings.
2. Match encoder settings to YouTube’s recommendations
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). For H.264, its recommended bitrates are:

These are YouTube Help recommendations, not a promise that your VPS can encode at that quality. YouTube transcodes live streams into different playback formats, but that does not remove the need for the VPS to deliver a stable feed to ingest. YouTube’s settings and bitrate guidance are at Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
3. Test a representative stream before relying on it
Run a test with the actual media, audio, resolution and frame rate you intend to use. Check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health messages, and watch CPU, memory and outbound transfer on the VPS. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video movement, monitoring stream health and leaving upload headroom; see Tips for live streaming. If the stream drops frames or the server is overloaded, reduce the encoding workload or output target, or choose a more capable plan, then retest. No plan specification can substitute for this workload test.

Keep the VPS stream running and recover from interruptions
A 24/7 stream depends on more than starting the encoder once. Decide how you will detect a stopped encoder or server interruption and restart it, and check YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming that a running VPS means viewers are receiving a healthy feed. The restart mechanism depends on your operating system and encoder, so use the documented process manager or service method for the software you install and verify that it restarts correctly after both a process exit and a server reboot.

- Monitor the VPS’s CPU, memory, disk space and outbound transfer during a representative test.
- Check YouTube Studio for ingest warnings, dropped frames or a stream that has stopped arriving.
- Retest after changing the source file, encoder settings, VPS plan or software version.
Plan separately for an archive
A continuous broadcast is not necessarily a complete YouTube recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a feed that runs continuously beyond that point, do not rely on one YouTube archive to preserve the whole broadcast. Keep a local recording backup of content you need to retain; see Archive live streams.
