Choose OBS Studio if you need a visual production desk for scenes, sources, overlays, and audio. Choose FFmpeg if your channel is a fixed pipeline you want to specify, script, and repeat from the command line. Neither tool is inherently proven more reliable for 24/7 broadcasting: sustained 4K60 depends on your encoder, host, source, network, and recovery design.
YouTube’s current 2160p60 settings recommend 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC, or 50 Mbps for H.264, with CBR, RTMPS as the typical starting protocol, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Those are YouTube’s published ingest settings—not a benchmark of OBS against FFmpeg. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings before deployment, since platform guidance can change.

What OBS and FFmpeg are best suited to
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Operate scenes, sources, overlays, and audio visually | OBS Studio | OBS provides a graphical, scene-based production workflow. |
| Specify a fixed pipeline and repeat it through scripts or services | FFmpeg | FFmpeg exposes inputs, filters, stream selection, and outputs through command-line options, including explicit stream mapping. |
| Guarantee continuous 4K60 operation | Neither by itself | Documentation for neither tool establishes an end-to-end 24/7 uptime guarantee or a universal 4K60 capability. |
This is a workflow-based choice, not the result of a controlled head-to-head test. OBS is typically more approachable when an operator actively produces a show; FFmpeg is more direct when the desired output is already defined and should run predictably. FFmpeg’s flexibility brings responsibility for command construction, option ordering, version-specific behavior, and validation.

| HDR | Guidance specifies HEVC and 10-bit; AV1 is not supported for HDR on the cited settings page |
Use the bitrate row that matches the codec you actually send. The minimum is not the recommended target. Plan stable upload capacity above the stream’s configured bitrate, but there is no universally safe margin established by these sources; test the real connection over sustained operation.
How encoding capacity changes the choice
OBS: hardware encoding is not automatically better quality
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding because it shifts encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. However, older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality than software encoding at the same bitrate. The suitable choice depends on the specific hardware generation and target quality; do not treat hardware or software encoding as an across-the-board winner. OBS explains hardware encoding trade-offs.

FFmpeg: the host and command still set the limits
FFmpeg can read live capture devices and other inputs, apply filters or transcode, then write to one or more outputs. Its options generally apply to the next input or output, so command order matters; explicit -map options select which streams go to each output. That precision is useful for a defined pipeline, but it means you must validate the exact command and installed build rather than assume a sample command behaves identically everywhere. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and the documentation for the version installed on your system.

OBS states that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording at a particular resolution and frame rate. CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. Apply the same practical caution to an FFmpeg setup: a valid command does not prove that the source can be captured, encoded, and delivered continuously at the chosen settings. OBS’s system requirements page makes this distinction explicitly.

RTMPS is the normal starting point; HLS is a specific alternative
RTMPS for typical YouTube ingest
YouTube recommends RTMPS for typical ingest and says it encrypts data to and through Google’s servers. Start there unless your workflow has a concrete reason to use another supported ingest method. YouTube’s settings page lists supported codecs and encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS.
HLS when its packaging and codec path fit
YouTube’s HLS ingest guide specifies M2TS media, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs, muxed audio and video, HTTPS transport, and Media Playlists rather than Master Playlists. It supports up to 60 fps. YouTube says HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingest because it is segment-based. Consider it when its supported workflow, including a suitable HEVC/HDR path, addresses a real requirement and its latency and packaging constraints are acceptable; it is not an automatic reliability upgrade. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.

Continuous-stream reliability is a system design problem
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance identifies unstable network connections and inability to sustain the configured bitrate as common causes of dropped frames and intermittent disconnections. It recommends lowering video bitrate if the network cannot maintain it and trying a different ingest server where appropriate. See OBS connection troubleshooting.

FFmpeg documents protocol-level reconnection options, but their availability and applicability depend on the input protocol and installed build. A reconnect option does not guarantee that a capture source resumes correctly, encoding recovers, or YouTube accepts a restarted output. Design and test recovery against the actual source and host; a tool-level option is not an end-to-end uptime promise. The FFmpeg streaming documentation is regenerated for newer revisions, so check the installed version’s documentation before relying on a particular option.
Deployment checklist for OBS or FFmpeg
- Confirm the ingest target. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use its current stream key and ingest details. Treat the key as a secret; do not publish it in a command, screenshot, log, or shared configuration.
- Match YouTube’s encoder settings. Set the chosen codec’s 2160p60 bitrate target from the table, use CBR, and configure a 2-second keyframe interval without exceeding 4 seconds. Select RTMPS for a typical workflow.
- Validate the entire signal path. Check the source frame rate and resolution, audio presence and sync, selected encoder, output mapping, and actual ingest status. For FFmpeg, verify option order and stream maps; for OBS, check the active scene and sources.
- Run a sustained test on the production host. Observe encoding load, dropped frames, network behavior, and source health under the intended 4K60 workload. Basic compatibility claims are not workload guarantees.
- Decide what happens after failure. Identify how the process, source, and stream will be restarted; test what happens after a network interruption and a source interruption. Ensure the recovery behavior does not expose the stream key.
- Recheck documentation and settings at launch. Confirm the installed OBS or FFmpeg version and YouTube’s current ingest guidance, especially if relying on protocol options, HDR, or HLS packaging.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your channel plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
