When a live stream keeps pausing, first find out whether it is one stream, one device, or your whole connection: try another stream, then another device or network. That simple comparison helps separate a broadcaster-side issue from a problem with your app, Wi-Fi, home network, or internet service—before you buy anything.
Find out where the buffering is coming from
Refresh the page or close and reopen the player, then try a different live stream. If you can, check another service or website and test the same stream on another device or network, such as cellular data. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what made a difference.

| What you observe | What it may indicate | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| One stream buffers, but other streams play | The stream or broadcaster’s settings may be involved. | Try another quality or channel. If the problem persists only on that stream, report it through the service’s support tools. |
| Several streams or services fail on one device | The app, browser, device, or its connection may be involved. | Restart or update the app or device, then compare with another device or network. |
| Several devices and services fail on the same network | The home network, internet provider, or a local outage may be involved. | Restart the network equipment. If the issue continues, check for an outage or contact your internet provider. |
| Wi-Fi buffers, but a wired connection is stable | Wireless signal strength, interference, or local Wi-Fi conditions may be involved. | Improve router placement or use a wired connection if practical. |
| You are the broadcaster and upload capacity is near or below your configured bitrate | The outgoing stream may be unstable. | Reduce competing upload use, review bitrate, and check the platform’s stream-health information. |
Twitch recommends refreshing or restarting playback, testing another stream, and trying another network as initial checks. Those comparisons are useful on other services too, but the available controls and support options depend on the platform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor viewers: adjust playback quality
Try Auto, then lower the quality if needed
If the player has an Auto quality option, use it as a first test on a connection that fluctuates. Twitch says its Auto setting adjusts video quality to current network conditions. If the stream still buffers, select a lower resolution temporarily. YouTube’s official playback guidance also recommends trying a manual quality adjustment and another connection. Lower quality reduces picture detail, but may make playback more consistent when bandwidth is limited.

Use platform speed guidance as a guide, not a guarantee
Twitch publishes these recommended viewer download speeds for playback quality. They are Twitch guidance, not universal minimums; stability, competing traffic, device capability, and the stream’s configuration can all affect playback. Twitch notes that 1440p60 is available only where supported.
| Twitch playback quality | Recommended download speed |
|---|---|
| 360p | 0.7–1.5 Mbps or higher |
| 480p | 1.1–3 Mbps or higher |
| 720p60 | 3–6 Mbps or higher |
| 1080p60 | 7–12 Mbps or higher |
| 1440p60, where available | 9–18 Mbps or higher |
A speed test measures a connection at a particular moment; it does not by itself establish why a stream buffers. A result that appears fast enough does not rule out Wi-Fi interference, congestion, device limitations, or a problem with the individual stream.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Improve Wi-Fi and reduce competing network use
- Move closer to the router and place it in an open position, away from avoidable obstructions and wireless appliances.
- If other devices are downloading, uploading, or streaming heavily, pause that activity briefly and test again. YouTube recommends minimizing other connected-device use when speed is low.
- Where the device supports Ethernet, compare playback over a direct wired connection. If wired playback is stable but Wi-Fi is not, focus on wireless coverage or interference before replacing equipment. Check that your device has the required port before buying a cable; a Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one possible way to make a wired test, not a guaranteed fix.
After each change, replay the same stream at the same quality if possible. That makes it easier to distinguish a useful adjustment from a coincidence.
Restart and update the app, device, or home network
- Refresh playback: reload the page or close and reopen the streaming app.
- Restart the device: restart the phone, computer, TV, or streaming device, then try the stream again.
- Check for updates: update the app, browser, or operating system if an update is available. Menu names and steps vary by device.
- Restart network equipment if multiple devices are affected: Netflix’s home-network instructions say to unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, wait for the network to return, and then retry playback. Follow your equipment provider’s instructions if its restart procedure differs.
When to contact the broadcaster, platform, or internet provider
If just one channel or stream has trouble
Try another quality and another channel. If other streams work but this one does not, the viewer may not be able to fix the cause. Report the problem through the platform’s support tools or wait for the broadcaster or service to resolve it. Twitch notes that unusually high bitrate or misconfigured broadcast settings can make a stream difficult for some viewers to play.

If several devices or services have trouble
Check whether there is a local outage, then contact your internet provider if the problem continues after basic app, device, and network checks. Netflix recommends telling the provider whether the affected device is on Wi-Fi or directly connected by cable, and whether other devices have the same issue. Public networks can block video services, while cellular, hotspot, or satellite connections may not provide enough speed or stability for a particular stream.
If only Wi-Fi is unreliable, first check router placement and compare against a wired connection where possible. A router replacement or faster internet plan is not the default fix: consider either only after your tests point to persistent coverage, equipment, or service limitations.

If you are the person broadcasting
Viewer download speed is not the same as a broadcaster’s upload capacity. Check your stable upload connection, configured stream bitrate, other activity using upload bandwidth, and the platform’s stream-health diagnostics. A broadcaster can have an acceptable download speed and still lack the upload capacity needed for a stable stream.
Twitch’s official guidance says, as a general practice, a streamer’s upload speed should equal the configured stream bitrate plus 30%. Twitch gives the example that a 6 Mbps stream may require at least 8 Mbps upload. Treat that as Twitch guidance, not a universal rule for every platform or setup.

Bitrate, resolution, frame rate, network connection, and computer hardware need to be balanced. Twitch identifies excessive bitrate, network problems, and router issues as possible contributors to buffering or dropped frames. Check the platform’s current encoder recommendations and stream-health tools rather than assuming a single bitrate or resolution will suit every connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are the broadcaster trying to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a viewer-side buffering fix. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
