For a 1080p YouTube Live stream encoded with H.264, set OBS to 10,000 kbps for 30 fps or 12,000 kbps for 60 fps. YouTube’s live recommendations also call for CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. These are YouTube-published ingestion recommendations, not guarantees of stability: test your actual upload connection and monitor stream health.
OBS bitrate for 1080p YouTube Live
| Output | YouTube H.264 live recommendation | OBS bitrate setting | YouTube-listed minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 10,000 kbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 12,000 kbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations on its current encoder-settings help page, accessed in 2026. They apply to H.264 live streaming—not upload-video encoding. YouTube’s separate upload recommendations use a different table and should not be substituted for live settings. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose 30 or 60 fps
Use 1080p30 when stability and system load matter more
At 30 fps, use 10,000 kbps for H.264. This is a sensible choice if the loop has little fast motion or your computer has limited encoding capacity. OBS notes that streaming at 60 fps can place more demand on the system, so test the intended settings before going live.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse 1080p60 when smoother motion is important
At 60 fps, YouTube recommends 12,000 kbps for H.264. The higher frame rate can make motion look smoother, but it also raises the recommended video bitrate and can increase encoder workload. If you cannot sustain it, try 30 fps rather than assuming a higher target will work better.

A video loop has no special bitrate target in YouTube’s published recommendations. The guidance is based on ingestion resolution, frame rate, and codec. Mostly static footage may appear acceptable at a lower bitrate, but that is a content-specific judgment to verify with a test—not an official alternative target.
Set the YouTube Live output in OBS
- Choose resolution and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set the intended output resolution to 1920×1080 and choose either 30 or 60 under Common FPS Values. OBS describes Output (Scaled) Resolution as the resolution sent to the stream; check that it is 1920×1080 if that is your target.
- Set the live encoder bitrate and rate control. Open Settings → Output. In the streaming output settings, set the video bitrate to 10,000 kbps for 1080p30 or 12,000 kbps for 1080p60. Use CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends for live encoder settings. OBS labels may vary with its version and whether output mode is Simple or Advanced; if needed, switch to Advanced to expose encoder controls.
- Set keyframes to two seconds. In the streaming encoder options, set the keyframe interval or keyframe frequency to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. If you change frame rate, confirm the keyframe interval remains two seconds.
- Use a supported live protocol and audio setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its listed live encoder options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and AAC or MP3 audio. The 10,000/12,000 kbps figures in this guide are specifically YouTube’s H.264 recommendations; they do not establish equivalent targets for the other codecs.
- Connect OBS to the right YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or open the intended live stream and copy its stream key into OBS under Settings → Stream (select YouTube as the service, then enter the key using the available connection option). Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Test before the real loop. Start a test stream with motion and audio similar to the planned content. Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS statistics for dropped frames or encoder overload. OBS recommends testing ahead of the first stream.
Check upload capacity from India
The bitrate setting is not the same as a speed guarantee from your internet provider. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Run a speed test on the same connection and at the same location and time you expect to stream, then test OBS under realistic conditions. Advertised plan speed alone does not establish that the connection can sustain a live stream.

The sources do not establish a fixed upload-speed cushion, a special India-specific bitrate multiplier, ISP ranking, or a guaranteed speed margin. If YouTube reports unstable stream health or OBS shows network-dropped frames, lower the bitrate and test again; if needed, reduce frame rate or resolution. Do not keep a 1080p target solely because the internet plan advertises a large speed number.
Troubleshoot bitrate and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient incoming stream | Upload capacity, bitrate, or network stability | Re-run a speed test, then lower the OBS bitrate and test. If instability continues, reduce frame rate or output resolution. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | Network connection to the streaming service | Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance, then test at a lower bitrate. Check YouTube stream health during the test. |
| OBS reports encoding lag or overload | Encoder or computer workload | Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps, then test again. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can be more demanding. |
| YouTube reports keyframe or frame-rate errors | Keyframe interval or changed output settings | Set keyframes to two seconds and confirm the output frame rate is the one intended. |
| The picture looks poor despite a stable stream | Resolution, motion, encoder, or bitrate choice | Verify the output resolution and frame rate in OBS. Test the actual loop at the recommended bitrate for its frame rate; a static loop may tolerate less, but that requires visual testing. |
| OBS will not connect to the intended broadcast | Service, stream key, or protocol setup | Confirm YouTube is selected, the current stream key is entered, and the supported RTMPS setup is used. |
OBS’s connection troubleshooting documentation is dated 2024, while its overview and quick-start documentation date to 2021; interface labels can change between versions. For network-specific dropped-frame diagnosis, see OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
