OBS vs FFmpeg for a 24/7 Bhajan Channel on YouTube

OBS is the practical starting point for most solo bhajan channels using a fixed visual and looped media. See how it compares with FFmpeg, how to configure YouTube's encoder settings, and what a 24/7 stream needs beyond the software.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most solo creators looping prerecorded bhajans with a fixed visual, OBS is the easier starting point. Its scenes and media sources provide a visible way to build the stream and loop a file or playlist. FFmpeg is a reasonable choice if you already know how to configure, launch, log, and supervise a command-line media pipeline. The available evidence does not establish that either option is more reliable for continuous broadcasting; your host, connection, settings, and recovery plan matter.

OBS or FFmpeg: which should you choose?

What matters OBS FFmpeg
Workflow A visible interface built around scenes and sources; OBS documents local media looping and playlist looping with a VLC source. A command-line approach. Choose it if you are comfortable assembling and supervising a media pipeline; comparative setup details are not established here.
Best fit for this channel A solo creator who wants a fixed devotional layout, a looped bhajan video or playlist, and visual controls. An operator who already manages command-line media workflows and can monitor the process and connection.
Continuous operation OBS documents automatic reconnect settings, but does not promise uninterrupted uptime. No evidence here establishes comparative uptime or recovery behavior.
Supported specifics OBS documentation describes scenes, sources, media-file loops, VLC playlist loops, and stream settings. Exact loop, reconnect, and launch commands are not included here; verify commands against the official documentation for your build and operating system before relying on them.

For a stream that needs scene changes, titles, camera or microphone input, or overlays, OBS’s scene-and-source workflow is the more natural fit. For a single prerecorded asset and a static image, OBS can still do the job, but an experienced command-line operator may prefer FFmpeg. That is a workflow judgment, not a performance benchmark.

What you need before going live

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming: YouTube requires channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Livestream content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and rules
  • The server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube says first-time activation of live streaming can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before a planned broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
  • Bhajan recordings and visuals you have the rights to stream. Check the specific sound recording, performance, arrangement, artwork, and video; a devotional or traditional composition does not by itself establish that a particular recording is cleared.
  • An upload connection with enough sustained capacity for your chosen bitrate, plus an operator or recovery plan for a stalled encoder, host, or internet connection.

Set YouTube’s encoder settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Its bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the matching published range rather than treating one rate as universal. For example, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30. These are YouTube’s published settings, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Protocol: RTMPS, as recommended by YouTube.
  • Rate control: CBR, as recommended by YouTube.
  • Keyframes: every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Video: choose codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate as a matching set from YouTube’s guidance. Lower the target if your real upload capacity cannot sustain it.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3 are listed for RTMP/RTMPS. Check that devotional audio is clear and not clipping.

Test a representative section with both audio and movement before relying on the stream. YouTube specifically recommends testing with audio and movement similar to what you plan to broadcast. Watch Live Control Room’s stream health during the test and adjust quality if the connection cannot hold steady.

Set up a looping bhajan stream in OBS

  1. Build the layout. In OBS, create a scene and add the sources needed for your layout, such as a devotional visual and the media source. OBS describes scenes and sources as the building blocks of a stream. OBS Studio overview
  2. Choose how to loop media. Add a local media file and enable its loop option for one video, or use a VLC video source for a playlist loop. The VLC source requires VLC to be installed. Confirm the playlist order and that each transition behaves as intended. OBS media sources
  3. Configure the stream connection. In OBS’s stream settings, choose a service or enter a custom server and stream key. Copy the server URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the stream key as a credential; do not publish or share it.
  4. Set output to match YouTube’s guidance. Use RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, a supported audio codec, and a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate suited to your connection. Check the current YouTube settings page for the bitrate range for your selected codec and video format.
  5. Test before committing to a long session. Preview audio levels, motion, visual transitions, and the loop point. Start a test stream and check Live Control Room for stream health. OBS documents automatic reconnect among its advanced settings; test the behavior rather than treating it as an uptime guarantee.
  6. Plan who will respond to failures. Decide how you will notice a stopped OBS process, loss of internet, a bad media transition, or a YouTube disconnect, and who can restart or investigate it. Reconnect settings cannot recover a powered-off computer or a failed home connection.

What about FFmpeg?

FFmpeg can suit a technically confident operator who is comfortable building and supervising a command-line media pipeline. But choosing it does not remove the need to configure the stream to YouTube’s requirements, check playback and audio, monitor the connection, or plan for recovery. Exact FFmpeg loop and reconnect flags depend on the command, build, and operating system; no command is provided here, so verify those details against official FFmpeg documentation before using them for an unattended broadcast.

Do not assume that a command-line encoder uses fewer resources or is more stable than OBS for your particular setup. There is no comparative benchmark here. Test the chosen workflow with the actual bhajan media, host, and connection, and ensure you can read its logs and respond if it stops.

Plan the archive and rights separately from the encoder

YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a single 24-hour session producing a complete archive under that rule. If saved replays matter, plan session length and replay handling around YouTube’s published limit. YouTube’s encoder guide

Also distinguish permission to broadcast from eligibility for monetization: the general live-stream policy does not clear any individual bhajan recording, performance, arrangement, artwork, or video. Confirm the rights for each asset with the relevant rights holders before streaming.

Common problems and what to check

  • You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified, has no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and that any first-time live activation has completed; YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Confirm that you are using the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  • Live Control Room reports poor stream health: Check sustained upload capacity, then lower the bitrate or video format to a level your connection can maintain. Confirm CBR, RTMPS, and the recommended keyframe interval; test with representative motion and audio.
  • The bhajan stops or the playlist does not advance: In OBS, confirm the media source’s loop setting, playlist contents, and—in the VLC playlist case—that VLC is installed. Test transitions before leaving the stream unattended.
  • Audio is silent, clipped, or out of sync: Check that the intended audio source is active, review OBS levels, and test a representative passage. YouTube permits AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; confirm the encoder’s selected audio format.
  • The broadcast ends after a disconnect or host failure: Check the internet connection, OBS reconnect behavior, and whether the host or encoder is still running. A reconnect option cannot bring back a powered-off computer; establish a person-on-call or another recovery plan.
  • The stream works but a recording is missing or incomplete: Check the session duration. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not a full 24-hour session.
  • A rights claim or restriction appears: Review the specific asset and the notice in YouTube Studio; confirm permissions with the relevant rights holders. The fact that a song is a bhajan does not settle rights in a particular recording or performance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If keeping a computer and home connection running is the main obstacle, StreamNeo is a cloud option for continuously looping uploaded videos to YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
