If by “YouTube playlist” you mean a playlist hosted on YouTube, that is a different workflow: OBS’s VLC playlist controls are documented for media items, and the available documentation does not establish that a YouTube playlist page URL works as a VLC source.
Which OBS source should you use?

These sources solve different input problems; the choice is not a documented performance ranking. OBS documentation does not establish that one source uses less CPU or GPU, is more reliable, or produces smoother transitions than the other. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

Loop one local video with Media Source
- In OBS Studio, add a Media Source to the scene and select the local file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties. It is off by default; when enabled, playback repeats after the file ends.
- Check the other playback options against your scene behavior. Restart playback when source becomes active defaults on, and Show nothing when playback ends defaults on.
OBS lists Media Source for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its documented supported formats include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. The source uses OBS’s built-in media handling. The documented playback-speed range is 1% (0.01x) to 200% (2x).
Loop multiple local videos with VLC Video Source
- Install VLC on the same computer as OBS. VLC Video Source appears only when VLC is installed. OBS specifically says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video Source to your scene, then add the local media files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the sequence. OBS documents this option as on by default. Shuffle Playlist defaults off; enable it only if you want randomized playback rather than the listed order.
- Review visibility behavior and any other source settings you need. OBS documents stop-when-not-visible and restart-when-visible behavior as the defaults. It also documents options for network caching, audio track, and subtitles; network caching defaults to 400 ms.
VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux when VLC is installed. OBS’s documentation does not provide a comparative reliability or resource-use benchmark for it versus Media Source.

Can OBS play a YouTube playlist URL?
Keep three workflows separate: a Media Source repeating a local file, a VLC Video Source repeating a playlist of local media items, and a YouTube-hosted playlist played through YouTube’s embedded-player workflow. OBS documents the first two; YouTube’s documented playlist embed process is not the same as adding a local playlist to VLC Video Source. The official documentation cited here does not confirm that a standard YouTube playlist page URL can be pasted into VLC Video Source and played as a native YouTube playlist.
YouTube’s sharing guidance says to copy the playlist URL and check that it contains “playlist,” so it identifies the playlist rather than only one video. Private videos must be shared with the viewer. In embedded playlists, videos may be unavailable when an uploader has disabled embedding, and age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party websites. To embed a YouTube playlist on a website, YouTube’s documented steps are to select Share, choose Embed, copy the HTML, and paste it into the website’s HTML. YouTube says its API Terms of Service and Developer Policies apply to embedded-player use. See YouTube’s embed instructions and YouTube’s playlist-sharing guidance.
Before you stream the scene to YouTube
Choosing a playback source does not configure a YouTube livestream. YouTube identifies encoder software as one livestreaming path; a channel must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days to livestream. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help, then configure and test the intended OBS scene and stream setup before going live.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- The single file stops at the end: Open Media Source properties and enable Loop; it is off by default.
- The list stops after the final item: Check that the files are in the VLC Video Source playlist and enable Loop Playlist.
- The order changes unexpectedly: Turn off Shuffle Playlist if you need the listed order; its documented default is off.
- A YouTube playlist item does not play in an embedded player: Check whether the video is private, embedding is disabled, or the video is age-restricted. These are YouTube-side access or embedding limitations, not VLC playlist controls.
- A YouTube playlist URL does not behave like a local VLC playlist: Do not treat the two workflows as interchangeable. Use local media files with VLC Video Source for the documented playlist-loop method, or use YouTube’s embed workflow where appropriate.
