For a coding tutorial stream in OBS, start with YouTube’s recommended encoder settings: RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds). Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your computer and upload connection can sustain; for H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These settings help avoid preventable ingest problems, but they cannot guarantee a nonstop broadcast—your computer, network, and power still have to keep running.
Choose settings for readable code and a stable connection
A coding stream has relatively little motion compared with many games, but small text and cursor movement need to remain clear. Select output resolution based on how viewers are likely to watch, then decide whether 30 or 60 fps provides a useful improvement for the editor, terminal, and demonstrations. YouTube publishes different bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate; 60 fps is not automatically better for every tutorial.

- Legibility: Make sure code and interface text remain readable at the intended viewing size.
- Upload capacity: Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain reliably, not merely one that matches a peak speed-test result.
- Encoding headroom: Your computer must capture the editor and encode video continuously. The best encoder depends on your hardware; no particular hardware or encoder is universally established as best.
- Motion: Use 60 fps if the extra smoothness matters for your tutorial; otherwise 30 fps may be sufficient.
Set OBS output for YouTube Live
- In OBS, open Settings > Output. Set the output mode and encoder options available in your version of OBS so the video uses constant bitrate (CBR). Choose a codec YouTube accepts for RTMP/RTMPS: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. Encoder availability and performance depend on your computer.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends that frequency and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose the video bitrate using YouTube’s recommendations for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. The H.264 figures below are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees of the speed your connection can maintain.
- In OBS, configure the output resolution and frame rate to match your intended stream. Keep the captured editor and demonstrations within what your computer can encode smoothly.
- For the server, use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest option where available. RTMPS encrypts stream data on its way to and through Google’s servers.

These are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not a promise that a particular internet connection can sustain the stream. If you use AV1 or H.265, check YouTube’s table for that codec rather than reusing the H.264 numbers.
Connect OBS to your YouTube channel safely
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its stream settings to get the stream key. YouTube’s live encoder settings page provides the relevant ingest guidance.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the server and stream key using the options shown in your OBS version.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in a screen share or coding tutorial; if it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.
- Start OBS and check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health messages before making the stream public or starting the scheduled broadcast.
Test before leaving a stream unattended
YouTube Help explicitly says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Run a rehearsal with audio and screen movement similar to the actual tutorial: scroll code, switch windows, type in the editor, and play any demonstrations you plan to include. Check that text is legible, audio is present, and YouTube Studio reports a healthy incoming stream. During the broadcast, keep an eye on stream health and act on YouTube’s messages.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewer output formats, but transcoding does not keep OBS running or repair a failed connection at your end. A test can reveal setup problems; it cannot establish continuous uptime. OBS Project also advises staying within the platform’s requested keyframe interval.
What “nonstop” requires beyond OBS settings
CBR, a compliant keyframe interval, and a sustainable bitrate reduce avoidable configuration errors. A 24/7 schedule also depends on the machine running OBS, its encoder, power, and internet connection continuing to work. The available YouTube and OBS guidance does not provide an uptime guarantee or specify hardware capable of maintaining a coding stream indefinitely.

- Use a connection that can reliably carry the chosen bitrate, and run an upload speed test before broadcasting.
- Keep the computer powered and prevent sleep or shutdown during the intended stream.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages; settings alone cannot diagnose every interruption.
- Consider a wired Ethernet connection as a setup option if it suits your network, but do not treat it as a required purchase or a guaranteed fix for outages.
