Compare the OBS preview, a local recording, and YouTube playback; check whether audio continues; then use OBS’s statistics and log to choose the right troubleshooting path.
Identify what “media source” means in your setup
OBS has several distinct source types that can look like a “media source” in everyday conversation. The right controls depend on which one you added. OBS documents Media Sources for local media files, VLC Video as a separate source, and other capture paths such as a browser or capture device.

- Media Source: A local media file opened directly in OBS. Playback and end-of-file properties are relevant.
- VLC Video: A source that uses VLC libraries. OBS requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Browser Source: A webpage rendered in OBS, such as a YouTube page. This is not the same as playing a local file through Media Source.
- Capture device: Video arriving from a camera or other device. Media-file playback settings do not apply.
Write down the source name and type before changing properties. If you are not sure, select the source in the OBS Sources list and open its Properties to identify it.

Locate where the frame freezes
Check three places during the same incident: the OBS preview, a local recording made by OBS, and the public YouTube playback. Also note whether audio continues. These comparisons help narrow down the failing layer; none proves a cause on its own.

More than one issue can occur at once. OBS notes that viewers can experience buffering even when OBS is not dropping frames; check the dropped-frame counter before treating viewer reports as proof of an OBS connection problem. See OBS’s buffering troubleshooting guide.
Check for a source playback problem
This branch matters when the source is a local file or a VLC playlist. OBS documents that a local file can leave its final image visible after playback ends. Its “Show nothing when playback ends” option is intended to prevent that last frame from remaining visible; it is not a general fix for a source that genuinely freezes during a continuous YouTube stream.

- Select the Media Source or VLC Video source and open Properties.
- Check whether the file or playlist reached its end. For a source expected to repeat, review its loop or restart behavior.
- For a local Media Source, check whether Restart playback when source becomes active is appropriate for the scene setup.
- If the issue is specifically the final image after playback ends, test Show nothing when playback ends.
- Test Close file when inactive or hardware decoding only when the source and symptom make those controls relevant. Change one setting at a time and check whether the result changes.
OBS describes these controls in its Media Sources documentation. They are source-specific tests, not universal remedies for a freeze that occurs mid-playback.

In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the dropped-frame count during the problem. OBS’s official Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide defines the signal this way: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” The page is dated September 30, 2024.

If dropped frames rise or OBS disconnects, investigate the connection from your computer to the streaming ingest rather than changing Media Source playback properties first.
- Check available upload capacity: Make sure the configured bitrate is sustainable on your stable upload connection, not just during a brief speed-test peak.
- Try another server or service option: This can help isolate an ingest-route problem where the service offers alternatives.
- Test without interference: Review VPNs, security software, network utilities, and network drivers that could disrupt the connection.
- Prefer wired networking if Wi-Fi is unstable: OBS recommends a wired connection when Wi-Fi is causing instability.
- Treat Dynamic Bitrate as a fallback: OBS describes it as a way to accommodate congestion, not a root-cause repair. It may reduce stream quality while adapting.
Do not conclude that the media file is broken just because YouTube playback stalls: a connection problem can affect delivery even when the source continues to play in OBS.

Check rendering and encoding performance
Rendering and encoding trouble is separate from dropped frames caused by the network. OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If the preview stutters or OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, use the performance branch in the OBS encoding performance guide.
- Reduce competing GPU work, such as other demanding applications running at the same time.
- Simplify scenes and reduce unnecessary or demanding sources and effects.
- If the problem persists, consider lowering output resolution or frame rate and test again.
- Use OBS’s performance indicators and a repeatable test to check whether each change helps.
A frozen frame alone is not evidence that the computer needs a GPU upgrade. Establish that rendering or encoding is the failing layer before considering hardware changes.

Gather evidence before asking for help
OBS’s OBS Studio Overview Guide recommends including a log when reporting a problem. A useful report should include:
- The OBS source type and its relevant properties.
- Whether the freeze appears in preview, a local recording, YouTube playback, or more than one of them.
- Whether audio continues while the image is frozen.
- The OBS Statistics indicators, including whether dropped frames rise and whether rendering or encoding trouble appears.
- The OBS log from a session that includes the issue.
There is no published prevalence figure in the OBS guidance for this exact one-frame freeze during a continuous YouTube stream. The symptom needs case-specific observations before its cause can be selected.
