Set up OBS for the nature feed
1. Prepare footage, ambient audio, and rights
Build the scene or playlist from the nature videos and ambient audio you intend to stream. Confirm that you have permission for both the images and sound, and that the license covers live streaming as well as any archive or later reuse you plan. YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance says to make sure audio and video rights are in order.
2. Choose the output format
In OBS, open Settings > Video and set the output resolution and frame rate to the format you plan to send. Pick 30 fps unless you have a reason to prefer 60 fps and have tested that the computer can encode it continuously. Nature footage with slow movement may not need 60 fps; faster water, wildlife, or camera movement may benefit from it, but higher frame rates raise encoding and bandwidth demands.

3. Configure the stream encoder
In Settings > Output, select the streaming encoder available on your system. Choose a codec supported by YouTube and your encoder. Set rate control to CBR, then enter the bitrate YouTube recommends for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, the recommended figures are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Do not use one of those values for a different format without checking the relevant row of YouTube’s table.
Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. Select RTMPS if your encoder and YouTube’s ingest server support it. YouTube’s current encoder guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS.

4. Set stereo audio
Use stereo AAC or MP3 as appropriate for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Check that the ambient audio is present in OBS’s meters and listen to a test stream. A quiet nature bed can be easy to mistake for silence; verify the source is active and that transitions between clips do not introduce gaps or sudden level changes.

In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key using the available option. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share screenshots that reveal it. Start with a private or unlisted test if you need to check picture, sound, and stream health before going public.

Check bandwidth, encoding, and stream health
YouTube recommends about 20% spare upload bandwidth beyond the total streaming bitrate. If you stream at 10 Mbps, aim for roughly 12 Mbps of available upload capacity at minimum; at 17 Mbps, roughly 20.4 Mbps. These are headroom calculations, not a guarantee of stability. Other household or office traffic, Wi-Fi interference, and connection variability can still cause drops.
- Run a test with the actual ambient audio and representative footage, including the most detailed or fast-moving scenes.
- Watch OBS’s dropped frames and encoding indicators, and monitor YouTube’s stream health in Live Control Room.
- Keep the test running long enough to reveal recurring problems rather than judging from a brief preview.
- If the stream struggles, lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a combination the computer and connection maintain reliably, then test again.
OBS offers automatic reconnect in its advanced settings. Leave defaults alone unless you have a clear reason to change them. Reconnect can help after a connection loss; it does not replace stable power, internet, or monitoring. The OBS overview is available at OBS Studio Overview.

Plan for archives and DVR beyond 12 hours
A continuous 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable way to create one complete YouTube replay. YouTube says a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all; separately, DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Plan storage around your recording quality and how long you need to retain files; there is no universal drive capacity because file size depends on the settings and retention period. If you intend to publish replays, decide how you will retain and divide recordings rather than assuming YouTube will archive the uninterrupted stream.

Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health
- Likely cause: The bitrate is too high for available upload capacity, or the connection is fluctuating.
- Fix: Confirm you have about 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate, reduce the output demand if needed, and retest while monitoring YouTube stream health.
OBS drops frames or cannot keep up
- Likely cause: The selected resolution or frame rate is too demanding for the computer or encoder.
- Fix: Test at a lower resolution or 30 fps, then raise settings only if the system remains stable during representative footage.
The stream disconnects and does not resume cleanly
- Likely cause: A network or power interruption, or reconnect behavior that has not been tested.
- Fix: Check OBS’s automatic reconnect setting, test recovery, and address the underlying connection or power instability. Reconnect is not an uptime guarantee.
The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete
- Likely cause: The continuous stream exceeded 12 hours; YouTube may not capture it.
- Fix: Record locally and verify the file is growing. Do not rely on YouTube DVR for a stream longer than 12 hours.
The stream has picture but no ambient audio
- Likely cause: The media source is muted, inactive, or routed to a different audio output.
- Fix: Check OBS audio meters and listen during a test stream; confirm source routing and that the selected audio format is supported.
