Choose OBS Studio’s VLC Video source if you want to manage a local-file playlist and production controls in a visual interface. Choose FFmpeg’s concat demuxer if you want an ordered, scriptable file sequence and can ensure the inputs have compatible streams. Neither method bypasses YouTube’s channel requirements, encoder setup, copyright checks, or the need to monitor the stream. There is no separate India-only workflow established for either tool; eligibility and available features depend on your YouTube account, and stream quality depends on your connection.

OBS’s VLC Video source is a playlist source; Loop Playlist is on by default and Shuffle Playlist is off by default. It also provides network caching, audio-track selection, subtitle controls, and source-visibility behavior. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer virtually joins packets from files listed in a text file and adjusts timestamps between files. It is not a guarantee that dissimilar media will join cleanly: different streams, time bases, or codecs may call for normalization, re-encoding, or another concat method. Inaccurate or estimated durations can cause artifacts or timestamp gaps. Its safe option defaults to 1 and rejects unsafe paths and directives; leave that default in place when your paths allow it. - Install OBS Studio and VLC with matching architecture. In OBS, create or select the scene that will contain the loop.
- In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video source. Add the local media files in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; enable it only if you want randomized playback.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior, audio track, and network caching settings as appropriate. Verify the picture in the OBS preview and check that audio meters respond as expected.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or show it in screenshots.
- Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations as a starting point. Confirm your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate, then check the preview and stream-health feedback before relying on the live output.
Set up a file sequence with FFmpeg concat
- Create a text file for the concat demuxer. If you use the format signature, its first line must be exactly
ffconcat version 1.0. Put file entries on following lines, for example:ffconcat version 1.0 file 'clip-01.mp4' file 'clip-02.mp4' - Check that the files have compatible stream layouts, codecs, time bases, and reliable durations. The FFmpeg documentation states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” If your inputs differ, normalize or re-encode them before expecting a clean continuous output.
- Configure FFmpeg to use the concat list as its input, then configure the output encoding for YouTube’s current ingest settings. Decide how the sequence will repeat in the command or through a supervising process.
- Consider concat’s
-safebehavior and the paths in the list. Its default safety behavior is preferable when your paths permit it; do not change it without understanding the implications. - Add the YouTube stream URL and key to the output configuration. Keep the key out of shared scripts and exposed logs. Test using a private or unlisted event, and check audio/video continuity and stream health before using the production event.
- For an unattended setup, separately plan process supervision, reconnect behavior, host restarts, and alerts. Reliability depends on the actual machine, network, and media; neither tool is established as universally more reliable for a 24/7 run.
These steps describe the workflow rather than a tested command. An exact FFmpeg command depends on the codecs and audio tracks in your files, your FFmpeg build and operating system, and the ingest protocol you choose.

Configure the YouTube stream and bitrate
Both methods send an encoder feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup requires the stream URL and key; its current help recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming. Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit both your media and connection, then check the actual stream’s health. The encoder settings page lists a maximum of 60 fps in its general table. Its recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps is 5 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265; those figures are codec- and frame-rate-specific platform recommendations, not proof that a particular Indian ISP connection can sustain them. Test your upload with headroom. See YouTube’s encoder settings and encoder setup guidance.
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days to stream. Its general live-streaming guidance recommends setting up the encoder in advance, starting it before a scheduled event, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. Confirm the current status and controls in your own YouTube Studio account; activation timing and feature availability should not be assumed to be uniform. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

For creators in India, the reviewed official setup guidance does not establish a separate OBS or FFmpeg procedure, or a uniform bitrate experience. Your account controls and upload connection matter more than a country-specific tool choice.

Do not confuse a local playlist with YouTube HLS ingest
An OBS VLC playlist is a list of local media files. An FFmpeg concat script is a demuxer input list. YouTube’s HLS ingest documentation describes a different protocol: segmented uploads using media playlist files, ordered segments, and HTTPS requests. These local-file workflows are not interchangeable with an HLS media playlist. See YouTube’s HLS ingest documentation.

Check rights and stream readiness
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder image, a temporary interruption, or termination. Having a license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: the rights owner may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Restricting a stream to territories where you hold rights does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted streaming. Confirm the rights and any allowlisting before starting the loop. Preflight checklist
- Confirm the channel is verified and currently eligible to stream.
- Check that you selected the intended event, stream URL, and secret key.
- Verify playlist order and loop behavior in OBS, or file order and repetition in your FFmpeg setup.
- For concat, confirm that the media streams are compatible or have been normalized.
- Check picture, audio meters, and transitions.
- Confirm upload capacity, then check YouTube’s preview and stream-health feedback.
- Confirm rights and any required Content ID allowlisting.
- Plan who will monitor the event and how the encoder will be stopped afterward.
Common problems and what to check
The VLC Video source is missing in OBS
VLC must be installed for the source to appear. Check that VLC and OBS have matching architectures; OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

The playlist plays once or in the wrong order
In the VLC Video source properties, check the file list order and whether Loop Playlist is enabled. Check Shuffle Playlist if order appears random. Also review visibility behavior, which can stop, pause, or continue playback when the source is hidden.

Check that all inputs have the same streams, codecs, and time bases, and that durations are reliable. The concat demuxer’s timestamp adjustment does not make mismatched files equivalent; normalize or re-encode incompatible inputs and test the sequence before going live.

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
Check that you used the stream URL and key for the selected event, that the key was entered correctly, and that your connection can sustain the configured bitrate. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators rather than assuming the encoder’s local preview means the platform is receiving a healthy feed.
The loop is interrupted after going live
Review YouTube’s stream-health feedback and check whether a third-party-content match triggered a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Confirm rights and any needed Content ID allowlisting before restarting.
