Use a browser capture task to take the screenshot and a scheduler to run that task on a cadence. Keep stable navigation and capture steps scripted; use an AI agent only where the page requires variable navigation or UI interpretation. This separation makes the recurring job easier to review and troubleshoot.
Plan the capture before scheduling it
Decide what the screenshot should show and what counts as a successful run. Record the target URL, the relevant page state, the viewport dimensions, and the capture scope. Choose a stable output name that includes a date or run identifier, then select storage with retention and access controls suitable for the image.

- Viewport: captures the visible browser area, useful for a known screen region.
- Full page: captures the scrollable page, which may produce a large image and include content below the initial view.
- Element: captures a specific component or panel.
Playwright supports these capture scopes, along with PNG, JPEG, and WebP output and CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale options. For comparisons over time, keep the scope, viewport, browser version, and scale consistent. Playwright screenshot documentation.

The example below uses Playwright in Node.js. It waits for a site-specific element rather than relying on an arbitrary delay, then saves a full-page PNG. Install Node.js, create a project, and install Playwright and its browser before running it:

}Pass a selector that appears only when the content you need is ready; a generic main may be too early for pages that populate asynchronously. If the relevant content updates after initial load, wait for its actual completion signal or a specific value to appear. Playwright’s screenshot options also let you capture an element, choose another format, or use a different scale. See its screenshot guide for the applicable API details.
Give the agent a narrow role
An AI computer-use agent is useful when it must interpret a page or perform UI actions that are awkward to encode as fixed selectors. It should not replace the deterministic parts of a recurring job: keep the schedule, output naming, and final capture settings in code, and limit agent discretion to the navigation or interaction that actually varies.
OpenAI’s documented computer-use flow includes creating a browser session, handling access requests, waiting for the agent’s turn to finish, reviewing saved browser activity, and deleting the session. Follow the provider’s current session instructions and verify the resulting page and screenshot rather than assuming the agent reached the intended state. OpenAI computer-use documentation.

A hosted option also exists: Google Cloud documents an isolated computer-use browser sandbox controllable through API requests or browser control via CDP, including automation tools such as Playwright. Schedule the script with GitHub Actions
For a recurring job, add a workflow to the repository. GitHub scheduled workflows use cron syntax, run against the latest commit on the default branch, and use UTC unless an IANA time zone is configured. The current documentation describes a shortest interval of once every five minutes; confirm the current service rules before relying on a specific cadence. GitHub schedule event documentation.

The uploaded artifact is retained for the configured period, so choose a durable storage destination and retention policy appropriate to your use case if you need longer history. Make recurring captures dependable
Expect schedule jitter
GitHub warns that scheduled runs can be delayed during high load, particularly near the beginning of an hour, and queued jobs can be dropped. A nonzero minute reduces exposure to the busiest time but does not make a CI schedule a precise real-time service. Monitor run history and alert on failed or missing captures; if an image must arrive by a firm deadline, choose a scheduler with guarantees that match it. GitHub schedule event documentation.
Check whether the workflow is eligible to run
Scheduled workflows in public repository forks are disabled by default, and GitHub may disable scheduled workflows in public repositories with no activity for 60 days. Verify repository activity and workflow status before treating a missed run as a browser-script bug. GitHub schedule event documentation.

Keep comparison conditions steady
Use the same browser version, viewport, device scale, capture scope, and output format across runs. Otherwise, changes in the capture setup can look like changes to the site. If the agent performs a UI sequence, record or review its outcome and check that the captured artifact reflects the intended state.

- The workflow never started: confirm the workflow is on the default branch, its schedule is enabled, and the repository is not a fork or inactive public repository affected by GitHub’s restrictions.
- The run started late or is missing: inspect the Actions run history and monitor future runs. High load can delay or drop scheduled events; a cron time away from the hour may help avoid the most exposed period but is not a guarantee.
- The browser cannot launch: make sure the browser installation step completed and that the workflow’s Playwright package and installed browser are available to the job.
- The page timed out: check that the URL is reachable from the runner and that the timeout suits the site. Avoid relying on a fixed long delay as a substitute for a meaningful ready condition.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: wait for a selector or page state tied to the content you need, and check whether the page requires navigation, authentication, or a UI action before capture.
- The agent took the wrong path: narrow its task, review session activity and access requests, and verify the final page before accepting the image.
- The image differs between runs: standardize viewport, browser version, scale, and capture scope, and check whether the site itself changes dynamically.
- The image is unavailable later: check artifact retention and access settings; move outputs to storage with a retention policy appropriate to your records.

Choose the right approach
A scripted browser plus a scheduler is a good fit when the page and capture procedure are stable and you want direct control of the runtime. Add an agent for variable navigation or interpretation, with explicit checks on its actions. Consider a hosted browser if operating the browser runtime yourself is the main obstacle, and confirm provider availability and terms. If timing must be exact, account for scheduled-run delays and drops rather than treating a standard CI schedule as a real-time guarantee.
