To take a website screenshot with Claude Code, connect the Playwright MCP server, then ask Claude to open the page and capture it. You need Node.js 20 or newer; the Playwright browser downloads the first time it is used. In Claude Code, run claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest, then prompt Claude to visit the URL and take a screenshot.
What you need
- Claude Code as your MCP client. The Playwright installation guide also lists Claude Desktop and other MCP clients.
- Node.js 20 or newer.
- An internet connection for the initial browser download and to load the website you want to capture.
Playwright MCP is a browser-automation server that gives an MCP client tools to interact with a browser. Anthropic describes MCP as an open protocol for connecting models to context and tools: MCP overview.

Set up Playwright MCP in Claude Code
- Install Node.js 20 or newer if it is not already installed.
- In a terminal, add the Playwright server to Claude Code:
claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest - Start or restart Claude Code if needed so it can load the MCP server. On first use, Playwright downloads its browser automatically.
- In Claude Code, ask:
Go to https://example.com and take a screenshot.Replace the example URL with the page you want.
The command uses npx to run the published package; you do not need to write a separate MCP server implementation. See the Playwright MCP installation guide for the current setup details.
Ask Claude for the screenshot you need
Capture the current viewport
Use a direct request such as: Open https://example.com and save a screenshot as homepage.png. Claude can navigate with browser_navigate and capture the visible page with browser_take_screenshot. If you omit a filename, the screenshot is returned inline in the tool response and saved to the output directory with a timestamped default name.

Capture the full page
For a long page, request a full-page image: Go to https://example.com and take a full-page screenshot named full-page.png. The screenshot tool supports fullPage: true, which captures the scrollable document rather than only the visible viewport.
Choose format and scale
The screenshot tool documents a filename, image type, full-page option and scale. Use an image type appropriate to the output you need, and choose CSS scale for output based on CSS pixels or device scale for device-pixel output. These options affect the file Claude produces; the exact appearance still depends on the page and browser state at capture time. Consult the Playwright screenshot tool reference for current parameter names and supported values.

Use snapshots to interact; use screenshots to inspect
A screenshot is useful for checking what a page looks like, but it is not the right source for choosing an element to click or type into. Ask Claude to use browser_snapshot to inspect the page’s accessibility tree and obtain element references, then have it interact with those references. Take a screenshot afterward to review the visual result. The distinction reduces ambiguity when a page has repeated buttons, dynamic content or visually similar controls.

The documented Playwright MCP setup runs a browser locally alongside your MCP client. That is a straightforward choice when you can install Node.js and allow the browser download. Microsoft also documents a remote Playwright Workspaces MCP path with managed browser sessions and screenshot support; consider it if you specifically need a hosted browser rather than local setup. The documentation cited here does not establish a current price comparison between the two approaches.

Common problems and fixes
Claude does not show Playwright tools
Check that the MCP command completed successfully and that Claude Code has reloaded its server configuration. Restart the client and confirm the server entry is named playwright. If setup still fails, compare your command and environment with the current installation instructions.
The first request is slow or the browser is unavailable
The browser downloads on first use, so the initial run can take longer than later captures. Ensure Node.js is version 20 or newer and that the environment can access the network for the download.

The saved image shows the wrong part of the page
Specify whether you want the current viewport or the entire scrollable page. For a full page, explicitly request full-page capture; for a particular visual state, ask Claude to navigate or interact first and capture only after the relevant content is visible.
Claude clicks the wrong control
Ask it to inspect the page with browser_snapshot and use the returned element references for interaction. Do not ask it to infer action targets from the screenshot alone.

The page looks different from what you expected
A browser screenshot records the page as rendered at that moment. The documented setup does not guarantee identical rendering across operating systems, browser states, viewport sizes, authentication states or network conditions. Specify the state you need—such as a signed-in page or a particular viewport—and verify the captured result visually.

Yes. The Playwright installation documentation lists Claude Desktop and other MCP clients as options; the command shown above is specifically for Claude Code.
