Best Tools for Taking Responsive Website Screenshots at Mobile Sizes

Use Chrome DevTools for quick mobile viewport checks, Playwright for screenshot baselines, Percy for hosted responsive comparisons, or ScreenshotNeo for API captures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a quick responsive check, use Chrome DevTools’ device mode; for repeatable screenshot tests, use Playwright; and for hosted comparisons across breakpoint widths, consider Percy. If you need to automate captures through an API, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it removes common consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, and failed or unusable captures are not billed. Desktop emulation is useful for layout work, but it is not a substitute for checking a real phone when device-specific behavior matters.

Which tool should you use?

Tool Best fit Key consideration
ScreenshotNeo API-based captures, including scripted or bulk screenshot workflows One GET request can return an image or PDF; only clean shots are billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status.
Chrome DevTools device mode Quick manual layout inspection Simulates a mobile viewport on a desktop browser; it does not run the page on a phone.
Playwright Automated screenshots and visual regression tests Baseline comparisons are most useful when runs use a consistent environment.
Percy Hosted responsive comparisons at selected widths Each selected width uses screenshot allowance; real mobile-browser captures have separate device and plan constraints.

Choose based on whether you need an interactive preview, repeatable tests, hosted review, or an API that returns captures to your application. For high-confidence mobile validation, add a real-device check when the target phone or browser could affect rendering.

Use Chrome DevTools for a quick manual screenshot

Chrome’s device mode provides viewport sizing, device presets, orientation, and options for simulating CPU and network conditions. In responsive mode, you can enter dimensions or drag the viewport to a custom size. DevTools can capture the visible viewport or a full-size screenshot. See Chrome’s device mode documentation for the current controls.

  1. Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools: select ⋮ → More tools → Developer tools, or use the browser’s DevTools keyboard shortcut.
  2. Toggle the device toolbar using the phone-and-tablet icon, or choose ⋮ → More tools → Device mode.
  3. Choose a device preset or select the responsive dimensions and enter the width and height you need. Check both portrait and landscape if the page must support both.
  4. Inspect the layout and interact with the page as needed. If the issue may depend on a slow connection or constrained CPU, use the device toolbar’s throttling controls.
  5. Open the DevTools command menu and search for Capture screenshot to save the visible viewport, or Capture full size screenshot to capture the full page.

Device presets help you reproduce common viewport dimensions, but the result remains a desktop simulation. Chrome describes device mode as a “first-order approximation”: page code runs in the desktop or laptop environment, so hardware, browser, and other mobile-specific behavior may differ. Chrome’s guidance is to test on an actual mobile device when the distinction matters. Source: Chrome for Developers.

Use Playwright for repeatable screenshots and visual tests

Playwright’s screenshot assertions let a test compare a current rendering with a saved baseline using toHaveScreenshot(). The assertion captures repeatedly until consecutive screenshots match, then compares the result with the expected image. This is useful in CI when reviewers need to see whether a change altered a page at a chosen mobile viewport. Follow the current Playwright visual comparisons documentation for setup and assertion details.

Smartphone Holder/Vertical and Horizontal Tripod Mount Adapter
  • FEATURE: the tripod phone mount is adjustable by screw mechanism, 360 degree rotating, vertical(portrait mode) and horizontal(landscape mode) or any angle as you need, not necessary to take your cell phone out of a standard tripod or small tripod.
  • EASY TO USE: two options for using tripod phone holder: 1. screw it directly to the tripod or selfie stick with pivoting arm, being able to 360 degrees rotating, 2. remove the phone clamp from pivoting arm and then mount on a tripod or monopod.
  • ADJUSTABLE WIDTH: 2.2inch-4.1inch(55mm-105mm), attachable to any regular-size smartphone, tripod, selfie stick, monopod or camera; two standard 1/4 x 20mm female thread interfaces meeting your various needs. Very functional and compact.
  • MATERIAL: the black part made of sturdy plastic, the female threads inserted are brass, the male screw is steel and soft non-slipping silica gel pads, which protect your cellphone from scratch and hold the phone securely.
  • ATTACHABLE TO: most mobile phones, tripods, unipods, selfie sticks, cameras, camcorders, pico projectors, including iPhone 11/11 Pro/11 Pro Max/X/XS/XR/XS Max/8/7/6/6s Plus/SE/5s/5/5c, Samsung Galaxy S10/10+/S9/S9+/S8/S8+/S7/S6/S6 edge, Note10/10+/9/8 and Android phones.

A minimal example, assuming Playwright Test is installed and a test project is configured:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('mobile homepage matches its screenshot baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.setViewportSize({ width: 390, height: 844 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage-mobile.png', {
    fullPage: true,
  });
});

Replace the URL and dimensions with the page and viewport you need. On the first run, Playwright may create the expected baseline; review it and commit it only if it is correct. Later runs compare captures against that baseline and report visual differences for review.

  • Secure Grip: Thick non-slip silicone pad ensures stability even with a thick phone case.

Keep the comparison environment consistent

Playwright cautions that screenshot output can vary by host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Use the same browser and execution environment for baseline creation and comparison; otherwise, environmental changes can appear as page changes. See Playwright’s guidance on screenshot comparisons.

Use Percy for hosted comparisons across responsive widths

Percy’s responsive visual testing workflow captures selected breakpoint widths so a team can review changes across several layouts. Its documentation counts each width as a separate screenshot against monthly screenshot usage: the documented example of 375px and 1280px counts as two screenshots. Include the number of widths you plan to test when estimating usage. Details: Percy responsive testing.

Percy also documents responsive snapshot capture through its Selenium and Playwright SDKs. SDK and CLI prerequisites apply, and the documentation notes resizing limitations for Firefox and Selenium 3. Check the current instructions for the SDK you use before adopting that workflow: responsive snapshot documentation.

Responsive widths are not the same as real mobile browsers

Percy’s mobile-browser workflow uses real mobile devices rather than resizing a desktop browser. In that workflow, the width parameter is ignored because the device fixes the screenshot width; portrait is the default orientation. The documentation lists Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android (Beta), and says mobile browser access requires the Percy Desktop & Mobile plan. Verify current browser coverage and plan details before choosing it: Percy mobile browser testing.

How to choose and validate your results

  • For a one-off layout check: start with Chrome DevTools. It offers presets and custom dimensions without requiring a visual-testing service.
  • For automated checks in tests or CI: use Playwright screenshots and baselines, and keep the comparison environment stable.
  • For a team reviewing hosted responsive regressions: consider Percy, accounting for each breakpoint width in screenshot usage and checking any plan requirements for real-device coverage.
  • For application-driven capture: use an API when you want to request screenshots from scripts or services without managing a browser workflow yourself.
  • When the actual device matters: verify on a phone. A simulated viewport cannot establish that every real mobile browser, device, or interaction behaves the same way.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. After creating an account and obtaining an API key, use cURL like this (the URL is encoded by --data-urlencode):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

For more request options and response details, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits are not billed, and the response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a desktop mobile emulator prove a page works on every phone?

No. Emulation is useful for responsive layout checks, but it does not reproduce every physical device or mobile-browser behavior. Test on a real phone when that fidelity matters.
