To keep a fixed sequence of local media files in OBS, arrange them in the intended order in a VLC Video Source, turn Shuffle Playlist off, and turn Loop Playlist on if you want playback to start again after the last file. For a playlist hosted on YouTube, use an OBS Browser Source with YouTube’s embedded-player playlist and loop parameters instead; OBS’s VLC source is not documented as a way to control YouTube playlist order.
First identify which playlist you are trying to preserve
OBS handles local files and a YouTube-hosted playlist through different source types. A VLC Video Source plays media files from the file list you configure in OBS. A YouTube playlist can instead be displayed in a Browser Source using YouTube’s embedded player. Choose the route that matches where your videos live; the settings for one do not control the other.

- Local files: use VLC Video Source settings to set file-list order, shuffle, and looping.
- YouTube playlist: load the playlist in an embedded player and enable playlist looping with YouTube’s player parameters.
Preserve the order of local files in a VLC Video Source
- Open the source properties. In OBS, select the scene containing the VLC Video Source, then open that source’s Properties.
- Check the file list. Put the media entries in the sequence you want played. The list order is the intended sequence when shuffle is disabled.
- Turn off Shuffle Playlist. OBS describes this setting as determining whether the source randomizes the media files or stays in file-list order. Leave it off for a fixed sequence.
- Set Loop Playlist according to your goal. Turn it on if playback should return to the beginning after the source runs out of files. Looping repeats the sequence; it does not determine its order.
- Apply the changes and check playback. Start the source and confirm that the first few items play in the expected sequence.
These setting definitions are in the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022. If your installed OBS version presents different labels or behavior, check the properties in that version rather than assuming the older documentation matches every interface detail.
What if shuffle is on?
With shuffle enabled, the source randomizes media rather than following the file-list order. A forum user reported that OBS generates a shuffled order when loaded and that the order can differ after OBS restarts, but this is an individual report—not an official guarantee about restart behavior. If preserving a chosen sequence matters, disable shuffle rather than relying on a shuffled arrangement staying the same.

What Visibility Behaviour changes—and what it does not
VLC Video Source also has Visibility Behaviour choices that govern what happens when the source is not visible, including stopping and restarting, pausing and unpausing, or always playing. These options affect playback while the source is hidden; they are not controls for file-list order. If your media seems to restart when changing scenes, inspect this setting separately from Shuffle Playlist.
Loop a YouTube playlist inside OBS
For videos already hosted in a YouTube playlist, add an OBS Browser Source that displays the YouTube embedded player. Google’s YouTube player parameters documentation supports loading a playlist with listType=playlist and the playlist ID in list. Set loop=1 to have the playlist player play through the playlist and begin again at the first video.

Conceptually, the player URL needs the playlist-selection parameters and the loop parameter, for example:
https://www.youtube.com/embed?listType=playlist&list=PLAYLIST_ID&loop=1Replace PLAYLIST_ID with the actual ID of the playlist. This is an illustration of the documented parameters, not a complete OBS configuration recipe: configure the Browser Source to load the appropriate embed URL and confirm it works for your playlist.

Autoplay and embedding caveats
YouTube documents an autoplay parameter that can start playback without user interaction. Its documentation also notes that playback data collection and sharing occur on page load when autoplay is enabled. Embedding, autoplay, or content restrictions can affect a particular video or environment, so the parameters do not guarantee that every playlist will play in every OBS setup.

Resume the current local file after an OBS restart
If your main requirement is not just a fixed sequence but resuming the currently playing local file after OBS restarts, an OBS forum resource describes a third-party option, Media Playlist Source. The resource page identifies version 0.1.3, lists OBS 30.0.0 as its minimum version, and says it supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. It claims the source saves the currently playing file so it plays when OBS restarts. Those are the plugin page’s stated capabilities, not a verified result for your installation, and the resource does not establish that it controls a YouTube-hosted playlist.

Before depending on a plugin, check its current resource page and compatibility with your installed OBS version and operating system. If you only need a predictable local sequence, the built-in VLC source with shuffle disabled is the simpler documented route.

Troubleshoot order changes and unexpected restarts
- Files play in a different order: Open VLC Video Source Properties, confirm the entries’ order, and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off.
- The sequence stops at the last file: Enable Loop Playlist if the source should restart after it runs out of media.
- Playback starts over after switching scenes: Check Visibility Behaviour. Its stop/restart option can affect playback when the source is hidden; it does not change the file list.
- A shuffled sequence differs after restarting OBS: Do not treat the previous random order as fixed. Disable shuffle for a deliberate order, or consider the plugin route only if its stated current-file persistence matches your need and version.
- A YouTube playlist will not start or loop: Verify the playlist ID and the
listType=playlist,list, andloop=1parameters. Then check whether the playlist’s videos permit embedding and whether autoplay works in your environment.
