OBS Media Source Hardware Decoding: Should You Enable It for a 24/7 Stream?

OBS’s Media Source hardware-decoding option can shift supported media decoding to the GPU, but it is not a universal 24/7 reliability fix. Compare both modes on your actual stream workload.

Usually, leave it off unless a controlled test on your own setup shows a clear benefit. OBS lists “Use hardware decoding when available” as Off by default. It can move decoding of supported media files to a GPU decoder, but that does not guarantee smoother playback or better reliability during a 24/7 stream.

What “Use hardware decoding when available” does

The option is in the properties of an OBS Media Source. OBS says it “Sets the GPU to perform hardware decoding on certain file types if your GPU has the appropriate hardware decoder built-in.” It applies to decoding the source media—not to encoding the outgoing stream. Choosing a hardware encoder for stream output is a separate decision. OBS Project: Media Sources

OBS Media Sources can play video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. The checkbox does not mean every codec or profile in those containers will be decoded by the GPU; support depends on the actual media format and the GPU’s built-in decoder.

Why hardware decoding is not automatically better

GPU decoding may reduce CPU work when the GPU supports the source format, but it can also use resources needed for OBS scene compositing and rendering. FFmpeg cautions that hardware acceleration may have no effect when unsupported, may not outperform software decoding on modern CPUs, and can incur a performance cost when decoded frames must be copied from GPU memory to system memory. For continuous streaming, CPU use alone is not the verdict. A setting that lowers CPU load but causes playback interruptions, rendering problems, or unstable behavior is not an improvement. The reviewed documentation does not establish that enabling this option improves or harms 24/7 uptime generally.

How to decide on your 24/7 setup

  1. Check what OBS is decoding. Identify the source’s actual codec and profile, then check whether the GPU, driver, and operating system support hardware decoding for it. A filename extension such as .mp4 does not establish codec support.
  2. Test both modes under the same workload. Use the same OBS scenes, Media Sources, and output settings. Compare a run with hardware decoding off against one with it on; check whether sources play and loop as intended, and monitor CPU load, GPU load, rendering or encoding problems, and OBS logs.
  3. Keep the option enabled only if the result is useful and stable. A CPU reduction matters only if playback and the rest of the OBS workload remain reliable. If enabling it produces no meaningful benefit—or introduces problems—leave it off.
  4. Test long enough to represent your use. There is no documented universal test duration or benchmark for every 24/7 system. Check the behavior over a representative run of your own stream rather than treating a brief successful playback as proof of continuous reliability.

This is a practical test method, not an OBS guarantee. Your results can vary with the source codec, GPU, driver, operating system, scene complexity, and output workload.

What to watch during the comparison

  • Media support: Does the source play correctly in both modes, including after it loops or restarts?
  • CPU headroom: Does hardware decoding reduce CPU load enough to matter for this workload?
  • GPU and rendering headroom: Does the GPU still have enough capacity for OBS to composite and render scenes without problems?
  • Continuity and logs: Do playback, looping, and stream behavior remain consistent, and do OBS logs show relevant errors?
  • System compatibility: Does the result hold with the actual GPU, driver, and operating system you will use continuously?

OBS needs GPU resources for scene compositing and rendering, so a GPU under pressure may not benefit from taking on decoding as well. If you see rendering lag or other bottlenecks, diagnose the full workload instead of judging the checkbox by CPU use in isolation. OBS Project: GPU Overload Issues

What one reported failure does—and does not—show

An OBS GitHub report describes a particular HEVC SRT/RIST case that froze and crashed on exit when hardware decoding was enabled. It is one reported case, not a measured failure rate, and it does not predict behavior for local files, different codecs or hardware, or current OBS releases. OBS Studio GitHub issue tracker
