Arrange the files in the intended order, then leave Loop Playlist on if you want the full sequence to repeat. Shuffle controls order; loop controls what happens at the end.
Set a VLC Video Source to play a fixed order
- Confirm the source type. In OBS, select the source and open its properties. The controls below apply to a VLC Video Source, not to a single-file Media Source or a YouTube playlist playing in a browser.
- Turn off Shuffle Playlist. With shuffle off, OBS follows the file-list order; with it on, OBS randomizes the media files. OBS documents shuffle off as the default, so check the setting rather than assuming it was enabled by a restart.
- Arrange the entries. Put the playlist entries in the order you want in the VLC Video Source properties.
- Choose whether to repeat. Leave Loop Playlist enabled to start the list again after its final item. Turn it off if the sequence should stop at the end. Looping and shuffle are separate controls; OBS documents loop on as the default.
- Save and verify your actual restart workflow. Restart OBS and check the source. OBS documents what these controls do, but does not promise that an externally edited playlist or folder will be re-read at restart.
Check VLC and source visibility settings
The VLC Video Source relies on VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed. If you run 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies that 64-bit VLC is required. If the VLC Video Source is missing, check this dependency before troubleshooting playlist order.

Visibility Behaviour controls what happens when a source is not visible: OBS offers stop and restart, pause and resume, or always play. This affects playback when scenes or source visibility change; it is not the shuffle setting. For an individual local file added as a Media Source, OBS has separate Loop and Restart playback when source becomes active options.

Turning shuffle off fixes the intended ordering of the file list OBS is using. It does not guarantee that OBS will refresh a playlist edited outside the application. A GitHub issue filed against OBS 32.1.1 reports a Windows case where an M3U or folder sequence remained the same after scene reactivation and external M3U edits were not reflected until the source was deleted and recreated. The issue is closed as not planned. This is one user report, not proof of universal behavior or a guaranteed fix for other versions.

- Check that the source points to the playlist or files you actually edited.
- Reopen the source properties and verify the entries and their order.
- Save the settings and restart OBS to test the behavior you need.
- If the source still shows stale external contents, recreating it is a possible diagnostic step reported in that case, but it is not an established remedy for every setup.
Fixed order is different from resuming the current item
If “consistent” means that OBS should resume the currently playing file after a restart—not simply begin the same ordered playlist—OBS’s built-in VLC playlist controls described above do not establish that behavior. The third-party OBS Media Playlist Source resource says it saves the currently playing file and offers a choice to restart at the first file or the current file. Check the resource’s compatibility notes against your OBS version before installing it.
Do not confuse OBS playlists with YouTube playlists
YouTube’s player has its own loop controls: right-click a single video and choose Loop, or open a YouTube playlist panel and select its loop control. Those settings repeat playback inside YouTube. They do not change the order or loop behavior of a separate VLC Video Source in OBS.
