If OBS’s Network Dropped Frames counter rises while you stream a YouTube loop, first lower the video bitrate in Settings → Output so it fits your stable upload capacity. Then, on Windows, test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing under Settings → Advanced → Network. Keep Bind to IP set to Default; try IPv4 Only only as a diagnostic, and switch back if it makes no difference.
Network drops usually point to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain—not necessarily a slow video encoder. This guide is specifically for OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter.
First confirm which OBS counter is rising
OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames from rendering lag and encoding lag. Network drops mean the connection to the remote streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Rendering or encoding lag points to a different part of the pipeline, so changing network settings may not address it.
Viewer-side buffering is different again: viewers may have trouble receiving or playing the stream even when OBS is not reporting network-dropped frames. OBS says it drops frames rather than buffer them, to keep the stream playing. See the OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide and its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide for those distinctions.

Lower the bitrate to match reliable upload capacity
Measure upload, not download
Use a speed test that reports upload speed, and account for other people and devices using the same connection. A speed-test result is a snapshot, not a guarantee of sustained throughput during a stream. OBS offers about 75% of total upload speed as a useful starting point; YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. Treat both as guidance, not a promise of stability.
YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates; they are encoder targets, not the upload speed you need to measure:

| Video format | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube’s encoder table; the page does not state a publication year. YouTube also lists recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so consult its table for your codec and full format rather than treating H.264 values as universal. Your connection needs to sustain the chosen stream bitrate with headroom.
Change OBS Output bitrate and test
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Find the video bitrate setting for your streaming output and reduce it. If the configured bitrate is above what your connection can reliably sustain, lowering it can reduce drops, but it also lowers video quality.
- Apply the setting and test the loop under conditions representative of the actual stream, including its audio and typical movement. Monitor YouTube’s stream health as well as OBS’s dropped-frames counter.
- If drops continue, reduce the bitrate again or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then retest. Use YouTube’s encoder table to choose a suitable target for the resulting format.
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. Its streaming tips also explain that total stream bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and that shared use affects capacity.

Test OBS network settings carefully
Windows: network optimizations and TCP pacing
On Windows, open Settings → Advanced → Network and test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. These options may help with some network conditions, but they are not guaranteed fixes. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance identifies these options for Windows; available settings can differ by operating system.
Keep Bind to IP at Default
Leave Bind to IP set to Default unless you have a specific reason to bind OBS to a particular network interface. Choosing the wrong interface can interfere with the connection.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Use IPv4 Only as a reversible diagnostic
If drops persist, test IP Family → IPv4 Only. If it does not improve the result, restore the IPv4-and-IPv6 option. This is a diagnostic, not a universal recommendation; do not leave a change in place when it has no observed benefit.

Try another YouTube ingest server
In Settings → Stream, select a different server if OBS offers one, then compare results. A better result can point to a route or server-specific issue, but changing servers does not fix a generally unstable connection.

Check Wi-Fi, VPNs, and network software
- If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. An Ethernet cable is worth considering only if the cable or local connection is implicated; it cannot fix ISP congestion or upstream routing.
- Temporarily test whether a VPN, security program, or network-prioritization utility is interfering. Restore protections and settings after testing; do not leave security software disabled as a workaround.
- Check that network drivers are current and functioning, especially if the issue began after a system or driver change.
Inspect local hardware and ask the ISP when needed
If appropriate, restart the modem and router, and inspect cables and other network devices when the symptoms point to a local fault. If bitrate reduction and these checks do not help, the cause may be outside the home, such as ISP routing or congestion; contact your provider with the times and conditions when drops occur.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS includes Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). It can reduce dropped frames by lowering bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but OBS cautions that it does not resolve the underlying network cause. The trade-off is reduced bitrate and therefore reduced stream quality. Treat it as mitigation while diagnosing the connection, not as a replacement for stable upload capacity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube loop rather than keeping OBS and your computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for streaming uploaded videos to YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, not a live camera feed.
