If a YouTube loop stops or freezes between videos, first check whether playback has frozen inside OBS or only on YouTube. Then verify the loop control for the source you are actually using: Loop for one file in Media Source, or Loop Playlist for a playlist in VLC Video. The distinction determines what to troubleshoot next; there is no single confirmed fix for every between-file freeze.
First identify what OBS is playing
OBS has two relevant source types, and their controls are not interchangeable. Note which source is involved, whether its media is local or remote, and whether every transition fails or only the boundary after a particular file.

| Source | Typical use | Loop control | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One media file | Loop repeats that file after it finishes. | OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. |
| VLC Video | A playlist of files | Loop Playlist restarts the playlist after it runs out of files; OBS lists this as on by default. | VLC must be installed. For 64-bit OBS, OBS documents a requirement for 64-bit VLC. |
These setting descriptions are from the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation (2022).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the matching loop and playback settings
For one file in Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene containing the source and select the Media Source in the Sources list.
- Open the source’s properties and confirm that Loop is enabled if the single file should repeat.
- Check whether the file itself plays through to its end locally. If the problem occurs only with one file, note its format and whether the freeze begins at its boundary.
For a playlist in VLC Video
- Select the scene and VLC Video source, then open its properties.
- Confirm that the playlist contains the expected files in the intended order.
- Check Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the final entry.
- Confirm VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
Do not confuse nearby controls
- Restart playback when source becomes active restarts a file when the source is in the current scene and visible. It does not mean “repeat when the file ends.”
- Show nothing when playback ends hides the source after playback ends; it does not make the file repeat.
- Close file when inactive frees memory when a source is hidden or off the current scene. Showing it again may require a short reload.
- VLC Video’s Visibility Behaviour determines whether playback continues, pauses or stops while the source is not visible.
OBS documents a default of 400 ms for VLC Video network caching. That is a setting default, not a recommended value or a generally validated fix for a freeze between files.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Determine whether the freeze is in OBS or on YouTube
- Watch the OBS preview when the transition should happen. Check whether the video advances and whether the audio meter responds as expected.
- If you are recording locally, inspect that recording around the transition. A recording can help distinguish a source or OBS problem from a delivery problem, but only if it captures the relevant interval.
- If the preview or local recording also freezes, focus on the OBS source, playlist or media input, and inspect the OBS log for relevant errors.
- If OBS appears healthy but YouTube playback stalls or looks wrong, check YouTube’s stream-status information and troubleshoot the encoder output and outbound connection instead.
YouTube recommends updating the encoder and checking the output directly in it. If the output is unhealthy in the encoder, investigate routed sources, encoder errors and CPU load. If the encoder output is healthy, investigate the outbound internet connection. See YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.
Check system load when there are performance symptoms
A file-boundary freeze alone does not establish a GPU or performance problem. Performance troubleshooting is more relevant when the transition coincides with rendering lag, dropped frames, encoder warnings or other system-wide symptoms.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Review the OBS log for rendering or encoding problems around the failure.
- Try a simpler scene by reducing complex compositions, resource-intensive sources and filters.
- Consider whether media resolution exceeds what the canvas or output needs; OBS identifies lowering media resolution as one way to ease resource pressure.
OBS describes GPU overload and resource bottlenecks as possible reasons it cannot keep up, not as the confirmed cause of every media-source freeze. Its guidance is at OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
Use community reports as clues, not proof
OBS community posts include user reports of VLC freezes while playing YouTube playlists and during long streams. One forum thread is titled “VLC video source freezes after ~6 hours”; that wording describes an individual report, not a typical duration or measured failure rate. The reports do not establish a general root cause or a confirmed universal fix. See the VLC video source forum thread and another VLC media-source discussion.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
For the same reason, scheduled OBS restarts, increasing network-cache values or replacing the source should be treated as case-specific experiments, not established fixes. Change one thing at a time and check whether the same transition fails again.

If the goal is a continuous YouTube loop rather than diagnosing a particular OBS setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
