To switch scenes quickly in an already-running OBS broadcast, open Settings → Hotkeys, assign a distinct shortcut to each important scene’s Switch to scene action, apply the settings, and rehearse the changes before relying on them live. If Studio Mode is enabled, check whether the shortcut changes the live Program scene or only prepares a Preview; confirm the transition workflow on your output.
Set up scene-switching hotkeys in OBS
OBS scenes are layouts made from sources. For a 24/7 broadcast, start with the scenes you genuinely need to move between—for example, a main video or display, a break screen, and an end screen. Name them clearly so you can identify the right target in the Hotkeys list. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide and the OBS Sources Guide.

- In OBS, open Settings → Hotkeys.
- Find the Switch to scene action under each target scene.
- Assign a distinct, memorable key combination to each high-priority scene, then apply the settings.
- Check the Hotkeys view for duplicate assignments. OBS warns that shared combinations can act as toggles; also consider shortcuts used by your game or other applications. The current interface strings are documented in the OBS English interface file.
- Rehearse each shortcut in the actual operating context. Confirm that the intended scene appears, that its visible sources and audio are right, and that you can return to the normal scene.
OBS documents hotkeys as a way to switch to a specific scene, but hotkeys do not guarantee uninterrupted scene changes or make a stream more reliable. Test the whole sequence before depending on it during a live broadcast.

Using hotkeys with Studio Mode
Studio Mode shows the current Live scene on the right and the scene being prepared on the left. A transition sends the prepared scene live. That means a scene change can involve two distinct questions: which scene is in Preview, and what action actually puts it on Program.

- Enable Studio Mode if it is part of your normal workflow.
- Use your assigned shortcut and inspect the Preview and Program panes separately.
- Trigger the intended transition, then verify the result on the broadcast output before relying on the shortcut live.
OBS explains Studio Mode and transitions in its overview guide. Do not assume that a shortcut has made a scene live until you have confirmed the output.
Scene hotkeys are not scene-collection hotkeys
A scene hotkey selects an individual scene in the active setup. A scene collection is a saved set of scenes and sources; OBS says collections can suit different kinds of streams or help reduce the number of scenes in a list, and they do not store output settings. For a scene change during a continuous broadcast, use a hotkey for a target scene in the current collection rather than treating a collection change as an ordinary scene switch. Collection changes are better handled as production-setup changes. Elgato’s integration guidance recommends selecting a collection before going live or recording to prevent interruptions; consult Elgato’s OBS Studio integration guide.

Keyboard shortcuts or a dedicated controller?
OBS’s built-in hotkeys handle basic scene switching without extra hardware. A dedicated controller is optional if you prefer visible, labeled physical buttons or need to trigger several kinds of OBS actions. Elgato’s Stream Deck integration supports selecting a specific scene, previewing scenes in Studio Mode, and other controls such as source visibility, audio, streaming, recording, and transitions. Choose based on the number of actions you need, whether controls should be easy to see and reach, and whether your workflow should switch live immediately or preview first. The plugin is described as free; that does not make the Stream Deck hardware free.
Troubleshoot missed or incorrect scene changes
- The wrong scene changes: Recheck which scene owns the assigned Switch to scene shortcut in Settings → Hotkeys, then test it again.
- One key combination triggers conflicting actions: Look for duplicate OBS assignments and conflicts with your game or other applications. Use a distinct combination and rehearse it in the broadcast environment.
- The scene appears in Preview but not on the live output: In Studio Mode, confirm the Program pane and perform the intended transition; verify the output afterward.
- The correct scene appears but looks or sounds wrong: Check its sources and audio during rehearsal before returning to the normal scene.
- You are considering switching collections mid-broadcast: A collection is a broader set of scenes and sources, not a single-scene action. Treat the change as a production setup step and plan it before going live.
