Measure the computer and network equipment’s actual power use, choose a UPS or inverter with enough watt and VA capacity, then match its battery runtime to the outage duration you need to cover. A UPS can keep your equipment powered, but it cannot guarantee that your internet provider’s network stays online.
1. Identify everything that must stay powered
Write down every device needed to keep the stream sending data during an outage:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The computer or dedicated streaming device running the encoder.
- The modem or optical network terminal (ONT) and router.
- Any audio or video equipment essential to the stream.
- A monitor only if it is genuinely needed while the system runs unattended.
Measure each device’s input power during the intended streaming setup, or use reliable device specifications. Include relevant peaks and startup behavior. Add the loads together, then remove equipment that does not need to operate during a power cut: every unnecessary load reduces available runtime.

2. Size the UPS output for the measured load
Check watts and VA
UPS capacity is commonly given in both watts and volt-amperes (VA), and the figures are not interchangeable. Watts represent real power; VA represents apparent power. Fuji Electric’s sizing guidance expresses the relationship as output watts equal to VA multiplied by power factor. Confirm that both the UPS’s watt rating and VA rating cover the combined load and expected peaks.

Schneider Electric India advises choosing watt capacity 20–30% above the total connected-device wattage to allow for power factor and headroom. Treat that as sizing guidance, not a guarantee for a particular system or a substitute for checking the UPS specifications.
Match battery runtime to your outage target
Decide how long the stream should remain online without mains power. Then use the manufacturer’s runtime information for your measured load to select a UPS and battery arrangement that can meet that target. A headline VA rating alone does not tell you how long a system will run. Runtime varies with load, inverter losses, battery condition and age, temperature, and discharge limits.
Schneider Electric India says basic UPS units often provide 5–15 minutes for safe shutdown; this is a general guide statement, not a runtime promise for a specific model or streaming setup. If you need longer coverage, compare UPS models or inverter systems that support the required battery capacity, and verify the runtime against the manufacturer’s data. Fuji Electric’s technical guidance notes that batteries can be connected in series to raise bank voltage and in parallel to raise capacity; the arrangement must match the UPS design.

3. Choose a UPS type and verify compatibility
UPS topology affects how power is conditioned and how equipment experiences a mains failure. ENERGY STAR describes standby (offline) units as switching from mains power to an inverter during an outage; line-interactive units add corrective voltage functions; online or double-conversion units continuously supply the load through a conversion path, avoiding transfer time on power failure.
Do not assume every stream needs an online UPS. Schneider Electric says line-interactive models are usually sufficient for home and office use, while online double conversion is suited to loads requiring very high continuity. Choose according to the sensitivity of your equipment, local power conditions, and the manufacturer’s specifications. If your mains supply is frequently poor, compare voltage-conditioning behavior as well as transfer behavior.
Before buying, check the following against the specific equipment and installation:

- Battery type, configuration, replacement options, and local service availability.
- Output waveform, voltage and frequency, and compatibility with the computer’s power supply and network equipment.
- Transfer behavior, voltage regulation, charging behavior, warranty, installation requirements, noise, and monitoring or alerts.
For an external-battery inverter or UPS, ensure the battery configuration matches the unit. Verify current India-market availability and warranty before purchasing; no particular model is established as suitable without your measured load and the manufacturer’s runtime information.
4. Put the internet equipment on backup too
If the ONT or modem and router lose power, the encoder may remain on but cannot send the stream. Connect the required network equipment to the UPS as well. A separate DC backup unit can be an option for network devices, but check the exact voltage, polarity, connector, and power requirements for both the ONT or modem and router before connecting it.
Local backup only protects the equipment in your premises. Your ISP’s local equipment or wider network may also lose power or become unavailable, so a UPS alone cannot promise an uninterrupted internet connection. If continuous availability is especially important, consider whether a separately powered or redundant internet path is practical.

5. Check the YouTube stream and test the whole setup
Confirm the encoder and stream settings
YouTube’s live workflow uses a stream URL and stream key: the encoder sends the feed to YouTube using those details, and the key functions like a password. Handle it as a credential; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for the settings appropriate to your selected resolution and frame rate, and check stream health in YouTube Studio.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video activity before going live, then monitoring stream health. Its streaming tips advise keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Test the actual outbound connection used for streaming: an internet speed test on another connection or at another time does not prove the stream path is stable.

- Start the stream using the normal encoder, audio, and video settings.
- With the stream running, simulate a mains outage using the UPS manufacturer’s safe test procedure. Do not disconnect or alter battery wiring.
- Check that the encoder and the ONT or modem and router remain powered, the network stays connected, and YouTube continues receiving the feed.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and confirm the audio and video remain acceptable.
- Repeat the test after changing the computer, network equipment, UPS, battery, or stream settings.
YouTube warns, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Testing is therefore about both power continuity and the internet path, not just whether the UPS beeps and stays on.

Common problems and what to check
- The computer stays on, but the stream stops: Check whether the ONT or modem and router are on backup, then inspect the network connection and YouTube stream health. The ISP’s network may be unavailable even when your equipment has power.
- The UPS alarms or shuts down soon after an outage: Recheck the measured total load, peaks, watt and VA ratings, battery condition, and runtime data at that load. Reduce nonessential backed-up equipment or choose a battery arrangement designed for the needed autonomy.
- The UPS does not support the battery arrangement you planned: Verify the required voltage and configuration in the UPS documentation. Series and parallel arrangements change different battery-bank characteristics and must match the unit.
- A router or ONT does not work from a DC backup: Check voltage, polarity, connector, and power requirements against that exact device; do not assume devices use the same adapter specification.
- YouTube reports poor stream health during the test: Check the encoder output and available upload bandwidth. Keep the total bitrate below available upload capacity with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test the actual connection under representative conditions.
Cost and buying decisions
There is no defensible universal UPS size or cost for this setup: the needed output and battery runtime depend on the measured load and the outage duration you want to cover. Compare complete system cost—including compatible batteries, replacement, installation, and local service—rather than choosing by VA label alone. Ask the seller or manufacturer for runtime at your load and confirm warranty and availability in India.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your stream uses uploaded recordings or a playlist rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a local encoder running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud. It streams to YouTube only.
