For a playlist, first choose the right playback source—Media Source for one repeating file or VLC Video for a multi-file playlist—then assign and rehearse the controls you need. Hotkeys make an operator’s job easier; they do not keep a 24/7 broadcast online if the computer, power, network, media playback, or YouTube connection fails.
Choose the playback source before assigning controls
OBS uses different source types for a single looping file and a multi-file playlist. The choice affects what playback options you can configure and how the media behaves when its source is hidden.

OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default for VLC Video. Confirm the settings in your installed version rather than assuming they have not changed. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
Check what happens when a playlist source is hidden
In a multi-scene layout, changing scenes can hide the playlist source. VLC Video has visibility behavior settings that can stop playback and restart it when visible, pause and resume it, or keep playing while hidden. Choose deliberately: if the playlist must continue through a scene change, a setting that stops or pauses it may not suit your workflow. Rehearse the transition and check that playback resumes at the point you expect.

Assign hotkeys for the actions you actually need
Open OBS’s Settings and select Hotkeys. Assign distinct key combinations to the actions you expect to use during operation. OBS documents configurable controls for streaming, recording, scenes, sources, audio, and the replay buffer; exact media-control labels can depend on the OBS version and source type.
- Stream: assign start-streaming and stop-streaming actions if you want keyboard control over the broadcast.
- Scenes and sources: assign scene changes or show/hide actions for sources you operate directly.
- Audio: use push-to-talk or push-to-mute where relevant to your audio setup.
- Replay buffer: assign its controls only if you have enabled and use that feature.
- Playlist playback: inspect the Hotkeys panel for media actions available to your source and OBS build. OBS’s VLC source implementation registers a playlist-next hotkey, but the available actions and displayed labels may vary.
Do not assume a general editing shortcut is a universal playlist control. OBS’s Keyboard Shortcuts guide covers editing and preview operations; configurable streaming and source controls are in Settings → Hotkeys.

Prevent accidental presses and conflicts
Pick combinations you can reach without hitting them by mistake, and check that they do not conflict with another assigned action. OBS supports keyboard keys for hotkeys. After assigning them, test each one while watching the relevant scene, source, or stream state. A hotkey that stops the stream is particularly worth testing before you rely on it.
Rehearse the playlist stream before leaving it unattended
OBS recommends testing settings, scenes, and stream smoothness before the first live stream. Use a private or otherwise safe rehearsal where possible, and verify the full chain rather than only checking that the hotkeys appear in the settings list.

- Start OBS and inspect the intended live scene. Confirm the playlist source is present and visible in the scene that will be sent to YouTube.
- Check media playback. Confirm the single file loops or the playlist advances and repeats in the intended order or shuffle mode.
- Test scene changes. Hide and show the playlist source as your real scene flow would. Confirm its visibility behavior does not stop, pause, or restart playback unexpectedly.
- Check audio. Listen for the expected sound and verify that any audio hotkeys affect the right source or device.
- Test assigned controls. Try scene, source, playback, and stream actions individually, watching for conflicts or unintended effects.
- Run a safe stream rehearsal. Confirm YouTube receives the intended output and that it remains smooth for long enough to exercise the workflow you plan to use. Do not treat a short test as proof of continuous operation.
OBS hotkeys are operator controls, not an uptime monitor or automatic recovery guarantee. A long-running broadcast still depends on the host computer staying on and functioning, continuous power and network access, working media playback, and the streaming platform. The OBS documentation cited here does not establish guaranteed 24/7 uptime or YouTube archive availability. Check YouTube’s current rules separately before relying on a particular livestream duration or archive outcome.
Optional: control OBS from another device
If keyboard access is inconvenient, OBS WebSocket can allow compatible external tools to control OBS. OBS says WebSocket integration is included by default with OBS Studio 28 and above; listed clients include Macro Deck, Touch Portal, Streamer.bot, and Bitfocus Companion. This is optional and is not required for ordinary keyboard hotkeys.

In OBS, open Tools → WebSocket Server Settings to configure the server. Enable authentication and set a password as OBS recommends. Do not expose an unauthenticated control endpoint. See the OBS Project’s Remote Control Guide.
