For a 24/7 YouTube playlist, start with OBS’s compatible hardware encoder if your computer already has one, then test it with your actual playlist and stream settings. Hardware encoding moves video work off the CPU, which can leave more processor capacity for other tasks. It does not guarantee better image quality or uninterrupted streaming: older hardware encoders may look worse than x264 at the same bitrate, and either option can fail if the system or connection cannot sustain the workload.
Hardware encoding vs. software encoding: what changes?
OBS can encode video with a dedicated component in compatible hardware or with x264, which uses the CPU. Hardware encoding is generally the practical starting point for an always-on playlist because it reduces the encoding workload on the main processor. The actual result depends on the encoder generation, settings, scene, and the rest of the machine.

| Decision point | Hardware encoder | Software encoder (x264) |
|---|---|---|
| Main resource | A dedicated encoding block in compatible hardware; OBS says this reduces work on the CPU. | The CPU performs the encode. Demanding settings can overload it. |
| Image quality at a constrained bitrate | Modern hardware encoders can produce very good results, but OBS cautions that older generations can have lower image quality than x264’s default veryfast preset at the same bitrate. | OBS’s x264 guidance says it can offer better quality per bitrate in some cases, with a greater real-time processing burden. |
| Compatibility | Depends on the operating system, hardware family, and encoder generation. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox with platform-specific notes. | x264 is included in OBS; practical performance depends on the CPU and settings. |
| 24/7 suitability | Lower CPU use can leave capacity for other work, but encoder type alone does not establish uptime. Test the complete setup. | Use it only if the CPU can sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, scene, and preset without overload. Test rather than judging by processor model alone. |
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because a specialized component can encode more efficiently than the CPU. That is a performance recommendation, not a promise that every hardware encoder will look better or run continuously without problems. OBS also notes that basic compatibility does not guarantee a system can stream successfully; requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See the OBS hardware encoding guide and OBS system requirements.
Should you use NVENC or x264 for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
Use the compatible hardware encoder you already have as the first option to test; do not buy a GPU just because the playlist is meant to run all day. If its output is unacceptable at your bitrate, or the hardware encoder is unavailable, test x264 on the same content and output settings. Choose the option that maintains stable stream health and acceptable image quality on your own system.

- Check what OBS actually offers. In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the encoder choices for your streaming output. Names and availability depend on the operating system and supported hardware. The presence of an option does not prove the machine can sustain your intended settings.
- Use your real playlist and scene. Test the moving content, overlays, transitions, and other scene elements you plan to broadcast. A light static scene may not reflect the load of the finished stream.
- Compare at the same output target. Keep resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and other relevant output settings consistent while comparing image quality and whether OBS reports encoding or rendering problems.
- Run a sustained test and monitor it. A brief successful preview is not evidence of reliable 24/7 operation. Check OBS and YouTube stream-health messages, and confirm any local recording continues to grow.
The official guidance reviewed does not establish a head-to-head result for a particular computer, playlist, or 24-hour broadcast, nor does it provide comparable power-use figures for hardware encoding and x264 on a specific system. Electricity savings, heat, or performance gains should not be assumed without measurements on your own setup.
Set OBS output for YouTube Live
YouTube’s live encoder guide supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS. Select a codec that YouTube accepts and that your OBS installation exposes for the system. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Follow YouTube’s current bitrate table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, then validate the stream in Live Control Room. The settings below are platform guidance, not a guarantee that your computer or connection can sustain them.

The 1080p30 figures are YouTube recommendations in its live encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026; they are not a universal minimum or evidence your upload connection can maintain that bitrate. The platform’s recommended values vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the output mode you intend to use.
Protect the stream key
Use the stream key configured for your YouTube broadcast in OBS’s stream setup, and treat it like a password: do not include it in screenshots, recordings, or public troubleshooting posts. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live setup and update OBS with the new key. Confirm that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube broadcast before starting a long-running playlist.

Check upload capacity and stream health
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, a 10 Mbps stream bitrate calls for at least 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity under that headroom rule. This is spare capacity, not a claim that a connection with that headline speed will be reliable: other devices, network variation, and interruptions can still affect delivery.
- Prefer a stable wired connection where practical, and avoid saturating the connection with uploads or other traffic.
- Test before the scheduled broadcast; YouTube specifically advises testing and reviewing stream-health messages.
- Monitor OBS for encoding or rendering overload and YouTube Live Control Room for ingest or stream-health warnings.
- If the connection or stream becomes unstable, reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level your system and upload can sustain, then test again.
YouTube’s streaming guidance recommends 20% bandwidth headroom and emphasizes reliability, advance testing, and monitoring. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Plan the archive separately from the live broadcast
A continuous broadcast is not the same thing as a guaranteed complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single uninterrupted 24-hour stream should therefore not be treated as a dependable complete VOD.

Troubleshoot common 24/7 playlist problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports encoding overload or the output stutters | The selected encoder, preset, resolution, frame rate, or scene may exceed what the system can sustain. | Test the compatible hardware encoder and x264 with the real scene. Reduce output demands if needed and repeat a sustained test. |
| YouTube reports unstable or insufficient stream health | Upload capacity may be too close to the stream bitrate, or the connection may be unreliable. | Restore YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom, reduce bitrate if necessary, and test the connection while monitoring Live Control Room. |
| The stream looks worse than expected | The codec, bitrate, resolution, or encoder generation may be a poor match for the content. | Compare hardware encoding with x264 at the same output target and use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the chosen codec and mode. |
| The replay is missing or incomplete after a long broadcast | YouTube may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours as an automatic archive. | Do not depend on YouTube’s automatic archive for a 24-hour stream; verify a local recording or other preservation workflow during a test. |
| The broadcast does not connect to the intended live event | The stream key or selected YouTube broadcast may not match the intended setup. | Check the key and event pairing in YouTube and OBS. If the key may have been exposed, replace it and update OBS. |
Keep the playlist eligible for YouTube
Encoding settings cannot resolve rights or monetization issues. Before scheduling a continuous playlist, make sure you have the rights needed for every video, music track, and other included material. Do not assume that crediting an owner, using a short excerpt, or having a video available elsewhere automatically gives permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright rules for your content and account, and check applicable reused-content rules separately if monetization is a goal. No encoder choice guarantees approval, archive capture, or monetization.
