How to Set Up Multiple OBS Media Sources as a Continuous YouTube Playlist

Use OBS’s VLC Video source to play local clips in order or shuffled, loop them continuously, and send the feed to YouTube Live.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To play several local videos in sequence on YouTube Live, add them to OBS as a VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, and connect OBS to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. This repeats the playlist while OBS and the computer keep sending the live stream; the loop setting does not keep a broadcast running if the computer or connection stops.

What you need before you start

  • A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the minimum age to live stream is 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
  • OBS and VLC installed on the computer that will encode the broadcast. OBS says to install 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. The VLC Video source relies on VLC libraries and may not be available until VLC is installed. See OBS Media Sources documentation.
  • Local video files you are allowed to stream, with enough available storage and a stable internet connection for the broadcast.

For one repeating file, OBS’s regular Media Source has a Loop property. For several files in a playlist, use VLC Video instead. OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. A listed format does not guarantee every file will play correctly on every computer.

Set up a multi-video playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC and reopen OBS

Install the VLC version that matches OBS’s architecture; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video does not appear in the source menu, confirm VLC is installed and restart OBS. OBS’s documentation explains the VLC dependency at Media Sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Add a VLC Video source to the scene

In the scene you will broadcast, go to the Sources dock, select the + button, and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name, then add the local files to its playlist in the order you want them to play. VLC Video supports playlists; the standard Media Source is intended for an individual file. See OBS’s Sources Guide.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  3. Set looping and playback order

In the VLC Video source’s properties, enable Loop Playlist to restart from the beginning after the last item. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order, or turn it on to randomize playback. These controls do different things. OBS documentation lists Shuffle Playlist as off by default and Loop Playlist as on by default; check the properties rather than relying on defaults.

  4. Keep the source visible during the broadcast

OBS documents VLC Video’s default visibility behavior as stopping playback when the source is hidden and restarting it when visible. Keep it visible in the broadcast scene, or deliberately change the source’s visibility behavior if you need it to continue while hidden. The eye icon in the Sources dock hides or shows a source, so avoid toggling it accidentally during a live stream.

  2. Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. In OBS’s stream settings, put the URL in the server field and the key in the stream key field. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.

  3. Start the encoder and confirm the broadcast

Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room, check picture and audio, then select Go live in YouTube Studio when ready. YouTube’s encoder guide covers this preview workflow.

Check rights and YouTube live-stream rules

Only stream videos and audio you have permission to use. A playlist setting does not grant rights to music, performances, films, or other third-party material. YouTube’s eligibility and encoder help pages explain access and stream setup, but they do not establish that a particular playlist is rights-cleared. Check the applicable rights and YouTube policies for your content before broadcasting.

Repeated prerecorded content can also raise channel-policy questions beyond whether a stream technically works. Do not assume that looping a video makes it original, licensed, or eligible for monetization. Keep records of permissions and make sure the channel’s content complies with the current YouTube rules that apply to it.

What looping does—and what it does not do

Loop Playlist repeats files inside the OBS source; OBS remains the encoder sending the live feed. The computer, OBS, power, and internet connection therefore need to remain operational. If any of them stops sending, the playlist option cannot keep the YouTube broadcast going by itself.

For a different ingestion method, YouTube documents HLS setup at YouTube HLS setup. YouTube’s documentation notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP and requires additional protocol settings, so it is an advanced alternative rather than a requirement for this OBS playlist workflow.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC, matching the OBS architecture (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS), then reopen OBS. The source depends on VLC libraries; see OBS Media Sources documentation.
  • Only one video plays: Check that you added every file to the VLC Video playlist, rather than creating a standard Media Source for a single file.
  • The playlist stops at the final clip: Open the VLC Video properties and enable Loop Playlist.
  • Clips play in an unexpected order: Turn off Shuffle Playlist if you want the listed order, then verify the playlist order itself.
  • Playback stops after switching scenes or hiding the source: Check whether the source became hidden. OBS documents stopping when hidden and restarting when visible as VLC Video’s default behavior.
  • YouTube receives no video or audio: Confirm the VLC source is visible in the active scene, that the intended clip is playing, and that the stream URL and key belong to the selected broadcast. Check OBS audio meters and YouTube’s encoder preview before going live.
  • The broadcast does not appear in YouTube: Verify live access, the selected stream, the server URL and key, and whether YouTube is waiting for the encoder preview. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours; see YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
  • The stream ends when the computer or network stops: That is a limitation of the local OBS workflow, not a playlist-loop setting failure. Use a cloud streaming service if you need playback independent of the local computer.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
