Then test one change at a time: use a compatible hardware encoder if CPU encoding is the bottleneck, simplify resource-heavy scenes, or reduce output resolution or frame rate if the content allows. Check YouTube’s ingest requirements separately: lowering bitrate alone is not a reliable CPU fix.
Diagnose what is using resources before changing settings
OBS workload depends on the encoder, output resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. A high CPU reading does not, by itself, prove that the encoder is the only problem: OBS also composites scenes using GPU resources, while games and other programs can compete for both CPU and GPU capacity.

- Record a baseline. In OBS, open Settings > Output and note the active encoder. Also note the output resolution and frame rate, CPU usage, and the symptom you see: high CPU, an OBS encoding-overload warning, rendering lag, or dropped frames.
- Change one thing at a time. Keep the same scene and representative content while testing a setting, so you can tell whether that change helped.
- Check both encoding and rendering. Encoding overload and rendering lag are distinct issues. GPU overload can prevent OBS from keeping up even if a game’s own frame rate appears fine. See the OBS encoding-performance troubleshooting guide.
Try a supported hardware encoder if CPU encoding is the bottleneck
A hardware encoder can move video encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component, if your computer has a compatible encoder. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD, Intel Quick Sync and Apple VideoToolbox; availability depends on the hardware and operating system. Check the OBS hardware encoding guide for compatibility details.

In OBS, open Settings > Output, select the relevant output mode and inspect the Encoder menu. Choose a hardware option only if it is available and supported on your machine. Run a representative preflight stream at your intended resolution, frame rate and bitrate, then check both the resulting image and OBS performance before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Do not assume every hardware encoder produces the same result. Older generations can deliver lower image quality than software encoding at the same bitrate, while modern encoder quality and performance vary by generation and workload. OBS describes modern hardware encoders as capable of very good quality with minimal performance impact, but that is not a guarantee for every computer or scene.
Lighten scenes and sources
Every source takes some resources to display, and some sources may continue using resources while hidden. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance recommends simplifying scenes and sources; the savings from any one change depend on your setup.
- Remove sources that are not used in the current production, and simplify scenes and scene collections.
- Use capture and media sources at no higher resolution than the stream output needs.
- Reduce the number and dimensions of browser sources. Test disabling script-heavy animated overlays if they are not essential.
- For static artwork, try an OBS Image Source instead of a browser overlay when that suits the design.
- Keep the active scene collection focused on the scenes needed for this stream.
Make these changes individually and compare performance with the same content. A hidden source is not necessarily cost-free, so remove or disable unused elements rather than assuming that hiding them eliminates their load.

Reduce resolution or frame rate only if the content allows
Output resolution and frame rate affect workload. OBS notes that CPU requirements vary with resolution and FPS, and that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps. If the stream is mostly a static image, talk, or slow-moving footage, test a lower frame rate or resolution and judge whether the visual difference is acceptable. Fast motion, detailed gameplay or other visually demanding content may make the tradeoff more noticeable. See the OBS system requirements and OBS streaming overview.
Change the output under Settings > Video, then test a representative segment. Do not treat the veryfast x264 preset in OBS’s advanced recording settings guide as a universal streaming fix: it is a recording baseline, and encoder controls and quality tradeoffs depend on the configuration.
Set YouTube delivery settings for the stream, not as a CPU workaround
YouTube’s ingest settings are about delivering the stream to YouTube; bitrate is mainly an upload and delivery constraint, not a direct CPU control. Use settings compatible with your upload capacity and quality target. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), supported codecs, and testing with representative audio and motion. Its guidance also recommends monitoring stream health during the event. See YouTube’s encoder settings and live-stream guidance.

These examples are YouTube’s H.264 ingestion bitrate recommendations; they are not CPU targets or performance benchmarks. YouTube lists separate values for AV1 and H.265.

Choose the row that matches your output, then check that your upload connection can sustain the setting. Test before the broadcast with similar movement and audio, and monitor YouTube’s stream health while live. Raising or lowering bitrate alone should not be expected to resolve CPU encoding overload.

- Use a representative scene, video or game, including the overlays and audio sources planned for the real stream.
- Test the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate and YouTube-compatible delivery settings together.
- Watch OBS for encoding overload, rendering lag and dropped frames, and check YouTube stream health. If a problem appears, change one relevant setting and repeat the test.

No cited guidance establishes a universal CPU reduction for these adjustments or a safe maximum nonstop runtime. Treat the settings as changes to validate on your own system, not as guarantees of a particular CPU reading or stream duration.

When a hardware upgrade is worth considering
If testing confirms that CPU encoding is the constraint and your current computer lacks a suitable hardware encoder, a graphics card with supported NVENC is one possible upgrade category—not a universal requirement. OBS’s guide lists Windows and Linux support beginning with GeForce 750 Ti / 900-series Maxwell or higher, and recommends a Turing-generation encoder for best results in that guide. Verify the exact GPU, computer, operating system, drivers, power supply and case before buying; compatibility and image quality depend on the full configuration. The cited guidance does not establish a current product price or a guaranteed CPU reduction.
