First check which OBS counter is rising: frames missed due to rendering lag, skipped frames due to encoding lag, or dropped frames from network conditions. They point to different bottlenecks, so changing the bitrate or encoder at random may not help. For rendering lag, reduce OBS’s scene and GPU workload; for encoding lag, test a supported hardware encoder if CPU encoding is the problem; for network drops, check the connection and YouTube ingest settings.
Use the steps below with the same prerecorded clip and scene, changing one thing at a time. That makes it easier to identify whether a fix helped.

Identify what OBS means by “GPU overload”
Playing a prerecorded video does not eliminate OBS’s local rendering work. OBS still composites the video with the scene, sources, filters, and output settings. The wording “GPU overload” alone does not reveal which stage is falling behind.
| OBS symptom | What it indicates | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Frames missed due to rendering lag | OBS is not rendering frames on time. Scene complexity or competition for GPU resources may be involved. | Reduce scene and GPU workload; check OBS’s GPU assignment and available headroom. |
| Skipped frames due to encoding lag | Frames are not being encoded on time. This may be a CPU encoding bottleneck. | Check the encoder and test a supported hardware encoder if CPU encoding is saturated. |
| Dropped frames | Frames are being lost while sending the stream over the network. | Check upload stability and whether the chosen bitrate is sustainable. |
OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide explains how to distinguish rendering and encoding problems. YouTube’s ingest requirements are a separate layer: a suitable bitrate cannot fix local rendering lag.

Diagnose the affected session before changing settings
- Open OBS Stats. During the problem, note whether the counter for rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames is increasing. Do not infer the cause from a general “overloaded” message alone.
- Save the OBS log from that session. It can provide details to review alongside the Stats counters if basic changes do not resolve the issue.
- Record the conditions. Note the OBS version, operating system, GPU, output resolution and frame rate, encoder, scene sources and filters, and the clip used. Those details matter because the title alone does not establish a particular system bottleneck.
- Retest consistently. Use the same clip, scene, and output profile after each change. Change one setting or workload item at a time so the result is interpretable.
Fix rendering lag by reducing OBS’s GPU workload
Try administrator mode first on Windows
Close OBS, then launch it with Run as administrator and repeat the same test. OBS says administrator mode resolves some overload cases; it is a low-cost check, not a guaranteed fix.
Simplify the scene and close competing applications
- Close unrelated GPU-heavy applications while streaming.
- Disable or remove animated and browser sources you do not need in the live scene.
- Turn off unnecessary GPU-using filters and effects, then retest.
- Avoid using a source at a resolution higher than the stream output needs when a lower-resolution source is available.
Keep the changes that reduce the rendering-lag counter without compromising the picture or content you need.
Lower output resolution or frame rate if the system still cannot render on time
If simplifying the scene is not enough, test a lower output resolution or frame rate. Retest after each adjustment and check Stats rather than assuming that a lower bitrate will solve a rendering bottleneck.
Fix encoding lag without confusing it with rendering lag
If Stats points to skipped frames from encoding lag, check which encoder OBS is using and whether the CPU is the constrained resource. Where OBS and the installed GPU offer a supported hardware encoder, test it as an alternative to CPU encoding. OBS’s hardware encoding guidance describes the option.

Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component, but it does not remove the GPU work OBS needs to render scenes. If rendering lag is the rising counter, switching encoders is not a dependable cure for that separate bottleneck. Compare the result with the same clip and scene, including picture quality at the selected bitrate.
Check which GPU OBS uses on Windows
On a system with integrated and discrete graphics, verify OBS’s assignment in Windows Graphics settings. The appropriate GPU depends on the applications and capture method. OBS’s GPU Selection Guide notes that placing OBS on an integrated GPU while a captured game runs on the discrete GPU can prevent Game Capture from working as expected.
For a prerecorded-video scene, do not assume that one GPU choice is universally correct. Check the assignment in the context of the sources and other applications you use, then retest and observe the same OBS counters.

OBS warns that Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) can cause performance problems or hardware encoder failures. If the overload began after HAGS was enabled, compare performance with it disabled; follow Windows’s prompt to restart if one appears. The result depends on the system, so HAGS should not be treated as a setting that always causes—or always fixes—overload. See OBS’s HAGS guidance.

Set YouTube output after OBS is locally stable
Once OBS renders and encodes reliably, check the ingest profile separately. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions list RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
Choose a sustainable profile
Match codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to both the desired picture and a stable upload connection. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, checked October 3, 2026, include:
| Output profile | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not measurements of OBS performance. YouTube advises choosing a quality your upload connection can sustain; selecting a higher bitrate or resolution will not free a saturated local rendering pipeline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTest with representative video and monitor stream health
Before relying on the stream, test with the prerecorded material you intend to use, including its typical movement and audio. Check OBS Stats and YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. YouTube also publishes live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common outcomes
Rendering-lag counter rises while encoding and network counters stay low
Focus on scene rendering: simplify sources and filters, close competing GPU-heavy applications, and test a lower output resolution or frame rate. A new encoder is not the first fix for this symptom.
Encoding-lag counter rises after rendering is stable
Check whether CPU encoding is saturated and test a supported hardware encoder. Compare quality and resource use, and confirm that the switch did not introduce another problem.
Dropped frames rise while local rendering and encoding appear stable
Investigate the upload connection and reduce the stream profile to a bitrate it can sustain. Keep local OBS diagnosis separate from YouTube ingest configuration.

Game Capture stops working after changing GPU assignment
Review the GPU selection for OBS and the captured application together. As OBS notes in its GPU Selection Guide, putting OBS on integrated graphics while a captured game uses the discrete GPU can interfere with Game Capture.

Hardware encoding fails or performance changes after enabling HAGS
Test with HAGS disabled and restart Windows if required. Compare the same workload before and after; the setting’s effect is system-dependent.
Overload remains after low-cost changes
Review the OBS log and system details to determine whether a hardware limit is actually implicated. Do not assume that every overload requires a new GPU, capture card, storage drive, or streaming accessory.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing on a YouTube channel without leaving OBS running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not go live from a camera.
