Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a passive 24/7 YouTube loop, leave OBS’s Stream Delay disabled. It adds a delay to the outgoing broadcast; it does not improve connection reliability. Set YouTube’s separate Stream latency option to Normal when dependable playback across varied viewer connections matters more than real-time interaction.
OBS Stream Delay and YouTube Stream latency are different settings
OBS Stream Delay holds back the broadcast at the encoder before it is sent to YouTube. YouTube Stream latency controls the delay between the encoder or camera capturing the event and viewers seeing it. Changing one does not set the other.
| Setting | What it controls | Where to find it | Practical choice for a passive loop |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Stream Delay | How long OBS delays the outgoing broadcast. | OBS Settings → Advanced → Stream Delay. | Leave disabled unless you have a specific production need for a delay. OBS does not prescribe a standard duration for a continuous loop. |
| YouTube Stream latency | Delay between capture at the encoder or camera and playback for viewers. | YouTube Live Control Room, in the stream settings. | Normal is generally suitable when the stream is not interactive and avoiding viewer buffering is the priority. |
OBS’s Advanced settings also include Automatic Reconnect, a recovery control rather than a delay setting. OBS lists the Stream Delay and reconnect controls but does not recommend a fixed delay for a 24/7 broadcast. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide and YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.
Choose YouTube latency for the audience, not the loop length
YouTube describes Normal latency as appropriate for non-interactive streams and as the choice with the lowest viewer buffering. That makes it a sensible default for a prerecorded loop that does not depend on chat or other live interaction. Lower-latency modes can make interaction feel more immediate, but may increase buffering. Check the current mode descriptions and any resolution constraints in Live Control Room before switching to Low or Ultra-low latency; YouTube’s available options and requirements can change.

Adding OBS Stream Delay does not make the stream more stable. Use it only for an identified production requirement, then verify actual viewer playback and recovery behavior. YouTube’s definition and latency guidance are on its live stream settings page.
Set a stable OBS encoder configuration
For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube currently lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported and lists AAC or MP3 for audio. Its encoder guidance says live streams are transcoded into formats for different devices and network conditions. Use the current YouTube settings table for your codec and resolution rather than treating the selected H.264 examples below as universal values.

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not guarantees that your connection, computer, or content will remain stable at the recommended bitrate. Base the choice on sustained upload capacity—not a speed-test download result—and leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate tables are in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Prepare OBS for a long-running broadcast
- Set the encoder and bitrate: In OBS, open Settings → Output and select a CBR video bitrate suitable for your chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and stable upload. Open Settings → Video to check the output resolution and frame rate. Menu labels can vary by OBS version and output mode; match the values to YouTube’s current encoder table.
- Set keyframes and audio: In the applicable encoder settings, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds (no more than 4 seconds), and use AAC or MP3 audio. Choose RTMPS if your encoder and current YouTube setup support it.
- Leave OBS Stream Delay off: Go to Settings → Advanced → Stream Delay and keep it disabled for a passive loop unless a specific production requirement calls for it. Do not use this control as a fix for dropped frames.
- Enable reconnect behavior: In Settings → Advanced, configure Automatic Reconnect for your setup. Reconnection may help OBS resume after a connection loss, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback for viewers.
- Choose YouTube latency separately: In YouTube Live Control Room’s stream settings, choose Normal for a non-interactive loop where viewer buffering matters more than immediacy.
- Test and monitor: Start a test with representative audio and motion. Check the preview, stream health messages, OBS statistics and logs. Test startup and reconnection, and, if feasible, a planned network interruption before leaving the setup unattended.
For a YouTube stream to start, use the stream key associated with the intended broadcast and keep it private; anyone with access to the key may be able to stream to that destination. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance recommends testing before going live.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and interruptions
Dropped frames usually point to an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain—not an incorrect Stream Delay choice. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance suggests lowering video bitrate and gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat that as troubleshooting guidance, not a universal setting. YouTube separately recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; the total stream bitrate must fit available upload capacity, including primary and backup streams where applicable.
- OBS reports dropped frames: Lower the video bitrate and test again. Check the upload path to the ingest server, your local network, security software, VPN, and other system factors. Change one variable at a time and compare OBS statistics with YouTube stream health.
- The stream does not recover after a brief outage: Confirm OBS Automatic Reconnect is configured, check the stream key and Live Control Room state, and run a controlled reconnection test. Reconnect behavior is not a promise of uninterrupted viewer playback.
- Viewers report buffering: Review YouTube stream health and whether bitrate is too high for the stable upload capacity. Normal latency is the more conservative audience choice when interaction is not essential; a lower-latency mode can bring more buffering risk.
- The stream starts but the picture or sound is unsuitable: Test with representative motion and audio, then verify resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
- The stream is interrupted by power or a wider network failure: OBS reconnect settings cannot keep a powered-off computer or disconnected internet link online. If using a dedicated PC, a UPS may help with short power interruptions; select it based on the equipment’s load and required runtime, and do not treat it as a guarantee of continuous streaming.
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide discusses dropped frames and possible network causes. YouTube’s Streaming tips include bandwidth headroom and testing backup-encoder failover.

Plan recording and archives separately
YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams that are under 12 hours. A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds that condition, so do not assume it will create a complete automatic replay. Decide whether you need local recording, segmented broadcasts, or another archive workflow, and confirm current behavior in Live Control Room. Archiving is separate from both OBS Stream Delay and YouTube latency.
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a computer and home connection running is the part you want to avoid, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the upload from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
