Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf OBS says “Encoding overloaded,” reduce the work OBS must render and encode, then check whether the bottleneck is CPU encoding, GPU rendering, or the network. For a simple 24/7 loop, start with output resolution and frame rate, the loop file and scene sources, and GPU-heavy programs running alongside OBS. Changing bitrate alone will not fix a local encoder that cannot keep up.
Why OBS says encoding overloaded
OBS must render and composite the scene as well as encode it. An overloaded encoder warning means OBS is struggling to keep up with the configured workload; the cause may be CPU pressure, GPU/render pressure, complex sources or filters, or competing work on the computer. The stream bitrate by itself does not identify the cause.

Use OBS’s status and Statistics window to distinguish that warning from dropped frames. OBS explains that dropped frames indicate a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. That calls for network troubleshooting, not an assumption that the video encoder is overloaded.
Change settings in this order
1. Lower output resolution or frame rate
- In OBS, open Settings → Video.
- Reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution if the current streaming resolution is more than the computer can sustain. Try a lower output resolution before changing the canvas.
- If the stream is set to 60 fps and remains overloaded, change Common FPS Values to 30. Fewer frames reduce both rendering and encoding work.
- Test the loop at the new settings and watch OBS’s status and stream health before leaving it unattended.
Base (Canvas) Resolution is not the same as output resolution. Lowering the canvas can complicate source positioning and asset management, so reserve that change for severe resource constraints and then check and reposition every source.

2. Simplify the loop scene and media
Every source uses resources, and some sources can continue using resources even when they are not visible. For a loop scene, inspect the video file’s resolution, animated overlays, browser sources, and filters. Remove sources the stream does not need, and temporarily disable expensive filters to see whether performance improves. Where a filter is necessary, apply it to the smallest practical source; deactivate sources with heavy filters when they are not needed.
3. Free GPU capacity
Close other programs that use substantial GPU resources and retest. If you are on Windows, OBS’s troubleshooting guidance suggests trying Run as administrator, which may allow Windows to reserve GPU capacity for OBS. Advice such as capping a game’s frame rate or enabling V-Sync applies chiefly when a game is competing with OBS; it is not a routine fix for a media-only loop. Windows Game Mode guidance can also vary by Windows version, so do not treat older operating-system advice as universal.

4. Pick an encoder for the bottleneck
If CPU encoding is the problem, a supported hardware encoder may move encoding work from the CPU to dedicated hardware. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to compatible hardware and operating system. Hardware encoding is not a universal cure: OBS still needs GPU resources to render and composite the scene, and an older hardware encoder may trade image quality for lower performance impact.
Choose between x264 and an available hardware encoder based on the measured bottleneck, compatibility, and image quality at the target bitrate—not on the encoder name alone. Compatibility depends on the specific computer. OBS’s guidance says VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported on Intel Macs because of constant-bitrate requirements and recommends x264 there; Apple Silicon streaming supports H.264. Check the current OBS compatibility guidance for your machine before selecting a preset.

Set YouTube ingest settings separately
YouTube’s ingest recommendations are for configuring the stream sent to YouTube. They do not diagnose or guarantee a fix for OBS’s local rendering or encoding overload. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 encoding, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval—not exceeding four seconds. Use settings supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance.
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube minimum ingest bitrate | YouTube recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p30 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p60 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p30 or 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 720p30 or 720p60 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform configuration recommendations, not independent performance measurements or a promise that every connection can sustain the recommended rate. Choose a quality your upload connection can reliably support. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health; use representative movement and audio, since a static test image may not reflect the loop’s actual workload.

Diagnose dropped frames without confusing them with overload
If OBS’s dropped-frames counter is rising while the encoder warning is absent or resolved, investigate the connection to YouTube. Check whether upload capacity is stable, whether the configured bitrate is sustainable, and whether the connection or ingest server is having trouble. Lowering video bitrate may help when upload capacity is insufficient; use a wired connection where practical. A lower bitrate is not the default answer to a local encoder-overload warning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon problems and fixes
- Overload continues after lowering bitrate: Bitrate is not the same as encoding workload. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify sources and filters, and check CPU and GPU load.
- Switching to hardware encoding makes little difference: The GPU may already be constrained by rendering or other programs, or the encoder may not be supported as expected. Check compatibility and free GPU resources before changing encoders again.
- The warning appears only with overlays enabled: Disable browser sources, animated elements, and filters one at a time to identify the source adding load. Keep only the elements the loop needs.
- OBS reports dropped frames instead: Treat it as a connection or upload-capacity issue. Review bitrate and connection stability rather than assuming the encoder is the problem.
- The stream works briefly but fails during a long run: A short test does not establish that an unattended 24/7 stream will remain healthy. Test the actual loop for a representative period and continue monitoring stream health; no single OBS setting guarantees continuous operation.
