OBS can play a local MP4 during a YouTube livestream using a Media Source, but there is no single proven fix for every crackling problem. Start by checking the source’s audio routing and OBS’s low-latency audio buffering option, then isolate the file, audio settings and stream connection. Change one thing at a time and test before going live.
Set up the MP4 as an OBS source
- In OBS, select the scene you intend to stream, then add a Media Source in the Sources panel. Select the local MP4 file.
- Choose whether the video should loop. If you want it to restart whenever the source becomes active, enable the restart-on-activation option.
- Leave hardware decoding off for the initial test. It uses the GPU decoder when available, so you can test it later as a separate change if needed.
- Play the source and confirm that it appears in the Audio Mixer and that its meter responds to the video’s audio.
OBS lists MP4 as a supported video format. A file’s .mp4 extension does not tell you which audio codec it contains; MP4 is a container that can hold different audio codecs. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources and Audio/Video Formats Guide.

Check that the audio reaches the stream
Inspect the source and streaming track
In the Audio Mixer, verify that the Media Source’s level moves during playback. Open Advanced Audio Properties and check that the source is included in the audio track used by your stream. If you want to hear the MP4 locally through OBS, configure audio monitoring deliberately and verify the selected monitoring device. Routing defaults can vary by setup, so treat these as checks rather than assumptions.
Turn off low-latency buffering if it is enabled
Check OBS’s low-latency audio buffering setting. The OBS Project’s warning says: “Low latency audio buffering mode may cause audio to glitch or stop playing from some sources.” If the option is enabled, disable it unless your setup specifically requires it, then retest. This is a sensible diagnostic step, not a guaranteed cure for every crackling report. The warning appears in the OBS Studio English locale.

Diagnose crackling one variable at a time
Compare playback outside OBS
Play the MP4 in a normal media player. Then test a second, known-good local video in the same OBS scene. If only the original file crackles, inspect that file’s actual audio codec and encoding; do not infer them from its extension alone. If both files crackle in OBS, focus next on OBS routing, audio configuration or the playback environment.
Review OBS audio settings
Check OBS’s selected audio devices and sampling-rate setting, then compare them with the relevant operating-system or hardware device settings. The OBS Studio Overview Guide advises keeping default options unless there is a reason to change them. Change one setting at a time and retest; crackling by itself does not prove a sampling-rate or device mismatch. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Separate source trouble from delivery trouble
Watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator while streaming. OBS says increasing dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection state can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. That points to a connection or bitrate issue; it does not prove that every crackling sound comes from the network. - If the file crackles in a media player, investigate the file or the playback device first.
- If local playback is clean but the OBS mixer or preview setup shows a problem, inspect the source and audio routing.
- If local playback and OBS monitoring seem clean but the received stream crackles, compare the stream recording with OBS’s connection status and dropped-frame counter.
- If one file fails and another works in the same scene, investigate the affected file rather than changing several global OBS settings at once.
These comparisons help narrow the cause; they are diagnostic checks, not benchmark results or proof of a particular fault.

Choose Media Source or VLC Video

Test before the public livestream
- Make one change, play the full relevant part of the MP4 in OBS, and listen for the symptom again.
- Use a private or unlisted YouTube test stream if you need to check what viewers receive. Compare that recording, if available, with local playback and OBS’s mixer behavior.
- If the problem persists, capture an OBS log for support and note whether it affects one file or multiple files, whether it is audible locally, and whether the connection indicator or dropped-frame count changes.
There is no universal test duration or log-based fix established for this particular workflow. A short test should be long enough to reproduce the point where the crackling normally occurs.
